A Daily Guide To Notable Shows

... Zen

9-10:30 PM PBS, MINISERIES DEBUT

He's handsome. He's honest. He's successful. He lives with his mother. Meet Aurelio Zen (an extra-raspy Rufus Sewell), the Venetian detective at the center of Masterpiece Mystery!'s superb BBC police series. Zen is no antihero — he's instantly likable and nearly unswervingly good (he won't even accept a free coffee) — but he's just as fascinating. Perhaps it's the way he bickers with his office nemesis (Ed Stoppard), romances the kindhearted department secretary (Bond girl Caterina Murino), and manipulates the slimy government lackey (Coupling's Ben Miles) who wants every case wrapped up in his boss' favor. Or simply how he chain-smokes, inhales espresso, and fills out an Italian suit. Either way, add Rome as a backdrop, a throwback '60s score, and freaky whodunits about everything from cave dwellers to hookers to the Vatican, and you have PBS' best mystery import in years.
