THE MORTON REPORT: An Interview with Actor Richard Schiff

The former West Wing star and Emmy winner talks about his role in the TNT original movie Innocent, and his years as an "actor's actor."

By Mindy Peterman
November 28, 2011

Richard Schiff’s role as White House Communications Director Toby Ziegler on The West Wing won him an Emmy and a multitude of accolades from critics and viewers alike. However, as an "actor’s actor," Schiff is much more than this iconic role. He has co-starred in over 50 feature films, performed on stage on Broadway and London’s West End, and continues to work in television. He can be seen this January in the new Showtime series, House of Lies, co-starring Don Cheadle and Kristen Bell, where he plays a bad Wall Street consultant. Schiff calls the role "one of the must fun experiences I ever had."

He also stars in TNT’s original movie Innocent, based on the novel by Scott Turow. Although somewhat weary from his flight home from Israel the day before, Schiff was kind enough to chat with me about his projects, past and present...

... Q: You’ll be co-starring in the TNT original movie Innocent. Could you talk about the premise of the film and your role in it?

Richard Schiff: "Innocent is adapted from a Scott Turow novel. Scott Turow wrote Presumed Innocent, as well. The movie starred Harrison Ford and Raul Julia. It was a really wonderful film that my friend John Spencer was in. This is the sequel, 20 years later. Same characters. I play a lawyer named Tommy Molto who had tried Rusty Sabich for murdering a colleague 20 years earlier and now Rusty is the judge, so we have a relationship. Rusty is presumed to be a suspect in his wife’s murder. My character reluctantly has to press charges and bring him to trial. That’s the backstory of it.

Scott Turow is a wonderful novelist. He was on the set and I got to know him quite a bit. Really talented writer. Mike Robe, who directed and adapted the novel, has worked with Scott on numerous other projects and did an incredible job adapting this to the screen, highlighting some of the pungent writing that Scott brings to his books.

I had a great time working with great actors like Bill Pullman and Alfred Molina, Marcia Gay Harden. So I was thrilled to take it and had a fantastic time shooting it up in Vancouver...

COLLIDER: Christopher Heyerdahl Talks HELL ON WHEELS and THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN – PART 1

by Christina Radish
November 28th, 2011

On the AMC Western drama Hell on Wheels, actor Christopher Heyerdahl plays Thor Gundersen, also known as The Swede, who is Thomas Durant’s (Colm Meaney) ruthless head of security. His tactics help him maintain a degree of control over the chaotic traveling town, but he abuses his power to extort money from its residents.

During this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, Christopher Heyerdahl talked about how he came to be a part of Hell on Wheels, what he enjoys about playing such a complex and complicated character as The Swede, that he’s developed the character through extensive research both in books and in his own Norwegian heritage, and the challenge of shooting the Western concurrently with his SyFy series Sanctuary. He also talked about playing the ancient Volturi vampire Marcus in the Twilight Saga films, the deleted scene from The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 that he hopes will end up on the DVD, what audiences can look forward to with Breaking Dawn – Part 2, and what it’s been like to have the support of genre fans...

... Collider: When you’re doing a role on a show where it’s obviously a real period of time, what sort of research do you do, into the time period? Did you draw from your own heritage, as well as look at what books are available about it?

HEYERDAHL: "Yeah. There are a number of books, just on that specific time period because it was such a huge part of American history. There are a number of books that were passed around, and that the Gaytons and the rest of the creative team had been looking at, as a guide to follow and move around, as far as the way one does, in telling a story. You try not to let the facts get in the way of good story. That’s the jumping-off point, so those books were being passed around. There’s also a wonderful thing called the interweb, but I tried to stay away from Wikipedia, bless their hearts.

Certainly, for Andersonville, I tried to do as much research as I could, specifically about Norwegians in Andersonville. When I was in Norway, a number of years ago, there was a wonderful show that was being done at the local museums, about the immigration of Scandinavia, about 10 years before the story takes place, when they all started to go to Minnesota. There was a grand exodus from Denmark, Sweden and Norway. There was one gentleman who had gotten control of a whole bunch of land, now known as Minnesota, and that’s why you have so many Scandinavians there. He basically invited everyone to come there and start a new life. There was also just trying to understand the mind-set of someone who would go to a place like that. It’s already quite an adventure to leave your own country and move into a new place today, but imagine when it really was like going to outer space or down into the bottom of the sea, where there’s a new frontier that is terrifying and unexplored.

There were so many things to draw on. I went and talked to my father about times, 70 years ago, when he was growing up. I would ask for stories from his parents, which would go back another 70 years, just to get a feel for the perspective, through some kind of oral history. It was a great experience because how often do you really sit down and talk to your family, or your extended family, about history. That doesn’t happen, everyday...

Neverland Dec 4

COLLIDER: Rhys Ifans and Anna Friel NEVERLAND Interview

by Christina Radish
November 28th, 2011

From writer/director Nick Willing (Alice, Tin Man), Neverland – premiering on SyFy on December 4th and 5th – is an original prequel story to author J.M. Barrie’s classic Peter Pan. In 19th Century London, Peter (Charlie Rowe) and his young pickpocket pals are sent out by their mentor Jimmy Hook (Rhys Ifans) to steal a magical orb, which inadvertently transports them all to another world, called Neverland. This mysterious realm includes the power-mad Elizabeth Bonny (Anna Friel) and her band of 18th Century pirates, trapped and in search of the secret to the tree spirits’ magical mineral dust, in order to have the power to fly. As the fight to protect and save this strange and beautiful world escalates, Peter and his crew must face harsh realities, as they learn that never growing up might be preferable to growing up like the corrupt Hook.

During a recent interview to promote the SyFy debut of Neverland, co-stars Rhys Ifans and Anna Friel talked about how they came to be playing such captivating characters, how thrilling it was to be a part of this new backstory, showing the evolution of the Peter and Hook relationship, and what they enjoy most about working in the fantasy genre...

Photobucket

... Collider: Do you see the relationship between Hook and Peter, with the boy who wants to grow up and the man who doesn’t, as a universal and modern story?

IFANS: "What Hook and Peter are presented with, when they arrive in Neverland, is the prospect of eternal life. In many ways, Hook is a lost boy, but a grown man. It was interesting to explore what the offer of eternal life does to a boy, and what the offer of eternal life does to a man. I think it makes a man greedy because a man is closer to death than a child. Eternity to a child offers goodness, and eternal life to a man is essentially corrupting because it involves a certain amount of vanity to embrace it."

FRIEL: "No story had ever before explained why Hook despises Peter so much, and what fascinated me with this script is that you get the story before. Why does this man hate this boy so much? In this case, he doesn’t hate him, he’s just very torn. I think it’s a great arrival at the story we all know. That’s what I found most fascinating, and that’s what Nick cleverly did by giving the backstory of the past between them. Nick created that really beautifully..."
