After Alexa Havins and her husband, Justin Bruening, had their first child last August — Lexington, a girl — Havins figured she'd take a break from a fairly busy acting career "and just have some mommy time."

This includes Rex Matheson (Mekhi Phifer), a manic, highly skilled loose cannon of a CIA agent, and Esther Drummond, his buttoned-down assistant, who is much more comfortable with computers than with guns and grilling mysterious perps.

Esther is where Havins comes in...

"I had never really been into 'Torchwood' myself," says Havins. "But my husband was. So I'd walk into the room and he'd be watching and I'd sit down and kind of got into it. So I was probably a little more familiar with it than other people when we started..."
