... Guardian: It's your 50th year in the business and you are about to appear as the Doctor in the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who. Both of you have had lots of reinventions. Is there a neat link there?

John Hurt: "I'd never thought of that, but let's use it! Oh yes, there's a huge link definitely. But I had no idea that Doctor Who had got so huge; I just thought, "Brilliant, I'll be a Doctor!" I was suddenly – what do they call it? You start "trending". This is all new to me!"


Guardian: Is it a relief you can talk about your role, now that the costume designer let slip to the Prince of Wales that you play a "dark Doctor"?

John Hurt: "Of course you have to remember that the Doctors are all one person, so I'm not outside of that. I can't talk about it, but I will say I was really impressed when I did it. Both the previous doctors – Matt Smith and David Tennant – boy, are they good at it. Whoa-wee! They are so quick, and there's a huge amount of learning and no time to learn it in. All that fake scientific nonsense. Terribly difficult to learn..."

Opening this weekend is writer-director David Twohy’s Riddick. The R-rated film finds Vin Diesel’s character being hunted by mercenaries, and once again, they’re hopelessly outmatched by the anti-hero who can see in the dark. But the mercs and their bounty are forced to team up when lethal alien monsters attack. If you’re a fan of Pitch Black, you’re going to be very happy watching Riddick. The film also stars Matt Nable, Katee Sackhoff, Jordi Molla, Dave Bautista, Raoul Trujillo, Bokeem Woodbine and Nolan Gerard Funk.

At the recent press day in Los Angeles I landed an exclusive interview with Katee Sackhoff. She talked about making the film, what surprised her about the filming process, how she was cut out of Pitch Perfect (but still gets residuals), the best part of attending conventions, Twitter, what she collects, Oculus, and much more...



... Collider: I’m gonna jump back into Riddick for a second. For people curious about the making of the movie, what’s the thing that maybe would surprise them about the actual making of the film? In terms of behind the scenes, the stuff you don’t see in the b-roll, the stuff you don’t hear about. Was there anything that really surprised you about the making of it that fans might be interested to learn?

Katee Sackhoff: "I mean, seriously, that’s such a great question because I think that there’s so many little things that I’m not even thinking of because it’s so commonplace for me. I think that for me, so I can’t really think about it, but the thing that gets me the most, the things that are the most fun for me, is like the scene at the very end of the movie where I’m harnessed and I come down, and to see that happen, it was on a little, the size of a four car garage space, with a mountain. A mountain that was built it, that was probably only twenty feet high, and a harness on a crane, and me dangling from the harness, and Vin [Diesel] sitting on the side of the mountain. That’s it. And then to see it finished is one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. Just to see the mud demons climbing up the mountain and him fighting for his survival, and my character coming out of nowhere. It’s amazing! I was like, “Oh my God that was so cool! I did that!” No I didn’t, Katee. You’re on a harness on a thirty foot mountain. I think just things like that, just to actually see it happen and then see it on camera, or you know, in the film is such a completely different thing..."

... Q: What is the most amazing thing about making Game of Thrones?

Maisie Williams: "I think the sheer scale of it, really. It wasn't until I worked on other productions that I realised how many crew there are on this. And the fact that we have two units running side by side - when I tell people on other jobs that, they say, "Oh, wow, that must be different, stressful." It means everything takes a long time. But it all adds just to the scale of it. And it's big in every aspect – there are so many fans too. I hit 50,000 followers this year on Twitter. It's crazy."

... Q: What has been your favourite scene over the last two seasons?


Maisie Williams: "It was when I was doing that scene with Charles Dance and I say, "Anyone can be killed.” It felt like when you're acting on a stage, and you either have the audience or you don't. I did it on my close up - and I just felt like I sort of meant it, you know? It was all quiet and it took a couple of beats until someone said cut and then it was like, a charged atmosphere. I felt good after that. It’s that feeling: I don't get it so much from acting but every now and then it comes up and I can't describe it. I get it a lot more dancing - it's just a little buzz that you get. That's why you go to work I guess...

If you’ve tuned into Castle at any point in its six-season run, you’ll see two relationships consistently at play: the romance between Kate Beckett and the show’s namesake, and the bromance (or, more formally, ‘partnership’) between Detectives Javier Esposito (Jon Huertas) and Kevin Ryan.

The latter is portrayed by Seamus Dever, the once-upon-a-time valedictorian of his high school who received a graduate degree in acting from the prestigious Carnegie-Mellon. Dever has likely guest starred on at least one of your favorite TV shows over the years, but found his home with the cast and crew of ABC’s Castle. I caught up with him to talk about his path from classical training to perfecting the art of the primetime bromance...





... Meaghan Coffey: Talk to me about the epic bromance between your character and Jon Huertas’ Esposito. Were the two destined to be inseparable from the beginning?


Seamus Dever: "I’m not sure they intended for us to be so prominent but that’s what they get for hiring good actors. I’m not content to just come in and say my lines and do the bare minimum. That stuff bores the crap out of me. Same goes for Jon. This was never a money job for me. To quote the rapper Macklemore, “If I would have wanted to be rich I would have been a f-ing lawyer.” I’m here to act so I’m going to find a way to make it interesting for me. Jon and I stuck together and built something out of it. Our network and our writers caught on and started wanting more. Thankfully we are willing to oblige them."


Meaghan Coffey: There’s one more relationship we have to talk about—the one you’ve had front row seats for. What’s your take on Castle and Beckett’s story?


Seamus Dever: "I hope they stick together and we find new challenges for them and their relationship. I know some people want drama and conflict but just like in life, there are always new obstacles as every relationship evolves. I think that’s enough...

Ming-Na Wen went from acting in an elementary-school play to portraying peace-keeping agent Melinda May in ABC’s original series “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”

Is adaptability a super power? If so, Mount Lebanon’s own Ming-Na Wen might be as special as the other-worldly heroes she lives among in her new action-adventure TV show “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”

From an early age, the 49-year-old TV and film actress learned how to deal with change. Wen was born in Macau, China, and moved to Hong Kong at age 3. She and her family then relocated to New York when she was about 6; they lived there for five years before settling in Pittsburgh. Though her clan operates the Chinatown Inn, a mainstay downtown, she developed a passion for acting. After graduating from Carnegie Mellon University with a bachelor’s degree in fine arts, Wen was on her way to launching a successful career.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for 20 years, it’s an easy bet that you’ve seen Wen in action. She appeared on “As The World Turns” from 1988 through 1991. She was featured on NBC’s “The Single Guy” throughout its two-season run and played one of Charlie Sheen’s love interests on “Two and a Half Men.” Her five-year “ER” gig came after an initial stint as a guest star. As for film, she kicked butt in Street Fighter, tugged at heartstrings in The Joy Luck Club and voiced the title character in Disney’s Mulan franchise. If you haven’t seen her at work, you might remember spotting Wen, a mother of two, in People’s 1994 and 2008 Most Beautiful People lists.

A self-professed “geek,” Wen won over the SyFy universe from 2009-2011 in her role as political attaché Camile Wray on “SGU: Stargate Universe.” That gig helped her prepare for what may be her biggest opportunity to date: a starring role on “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” which centers around Agent Coulson, famous for his role in The Avengers, and his crew as they try to protect the world from bad guys...

... Q: Are you ever recognized strictly for your voice-over work?

Ming-Na Wen: "[Yes], and it’s kind of odd to be recognized for playing an animated character. I recently did a photo shoot, and a wardrobe woman told me that her roommate freaked out that she was working with me … because I was Mulan!"


Q: You’ve worked in everything from sitcoms to soaps. Which project required the toughest schedule?

Ming-Na Wen: "Definitely “S.H.I.E.L.D.” [“Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division”] because anything with this much action requires long hours setting up stunts and explosions — plus, you’re never shooting in a pretty place. You need a lot of mental focus, as well as physical strength and endurance. But it’s also so much fun!"

... Q: Could you give a little introduction about your characters?

Tom Mison: "I'm Ichabod Crane, who people will recognize from the stories. But then from 250 years in the future, where everything he knew has gone except for the one thing he doesn’t want [to be there]: the Headless Horseman. And not only that, the Headless Horseman has a shotgun and is even more of a threat. And Ichabod thinks everyone around him is a maniac. That's the fun thing, he's from 250 years ago and he thinks everyone's insane now! He just thinks “this technology is just stupid!” I can't wait until the episode where he first listens to Lady Gaga."

Orlando Jones: "Who is awesome."

Tom Mison: "Yes, who is awesome!"

Orlando Jones: "Is the most awesome."

Nicole Beharie: "I play Detective Abbie Mills. I work with Sleepy Hollow Police Department. And basically, Ichabod's telling me this stuff about 250 years ago and that we have some mission, when I'm like “I got a job to do.” This changes my life. And she has kind of a dark past, which we’ll find out more about as the series progresses."


Q: Nicole, your character finds out that she is intrinsically woven into the mythos of good versus evil in the story in a way that you didn't even realize when you first met, i.e. part of that whole spell. Is that kind of daunting for you as actor? How will it be for your characters to have to learn to grow around each other?

Nicole Beharie: "As an actor, I think it's really great stuff to play with and work with! My character realizes that, for instance, there’s a monster in the woods that she saw when she was seven years old that was actually real. Freaky stuff."

Tom Mison: "And there's an apocalypse coming and only we can stop it."

Nicole Beharie: "Only two of us."

Tom Mison: "I will say this, the amount of information you find out in just the pilot is vast. And you've got another 12 episodes. There's more that we could find out that’s every bit as exciting as 'The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are coming...'”

... Q) So, you're going into season nine. When did it click as a television show creator that this had legs and was going to go somewhere?

Hart Hanson: "We were doomed at one point. We weren't going to make it to Christmas. We were the last pilot ordered. We were the last pilot commissioned. I wrote the script extremely quickly! And we weren't supposed to last until Christmas and our numbers weren't great. I think it was when we came back in season two when everybody came. Our insanely loyal, loud, opinionated, angry audience came with us. There are people that remember when we boxed from night to night and people just showed up. Our people followed us and we knew we had something that was (sadly for us) bulletproof. If they moved us to Friday nights they'd follow us."


Q) Will there be any new intern characters?

Hart Hanson: "We always think we're going to lose the people that play our interns. We're really lucky in keeping them and they're all amazing! We have a couple of intern replacements in our pockets when that inevitably happens. My favorite in early stages is an extremely obnoxious difficult surly handicapped person in a wheelchair who uses the wheelchair to get what they want. Thus far, knock on wood, we're getting to keep everybody. We've just gotten new contracts with everybody and I have no interest in firing any of them. They are just amazing."

Ian Toynton: "There are a couple of new characters coming in who will do more than one episode, so I understand. One is an ex-military padre and the other is a C.I.A. colleague of Booth. We'll see those more than once..."

Steven Yeun is okay with being fans’ 2nd favorite Walking Dead character

When Steven Yeun meets fellow actors in social situations, he feels obligated to downplay his story, because anyone who’s struggled for years to make it would probably have to suppress the urge to take a swing at him. After performing for several years in Chicago as part of The Second City, Yeun (pronounced “yunn”) moved to Los Angeles in 2009, where he promptly landed his first gig, a television adaptation of the popular comic-book series The Walking Dead. In three seasons, The Walking Dead has become one of television’s most popular shows, escaping the gated community of basic cable to beat some of network TV’s highest rated series. (Even The Talking Dead, Chris Hardwick’s post-episode talk show, beats Game Of Thrones.) It has become a phenomenon, if an occasionally troubled one, as it brings on its third showrunner in four seasons. Viewers haven’t seemed to care, though, as Yeun tells The A.V. Club, the producers would do well to keep Norman Reedus’ Daryl Dixon alive. We chatted with him briefly ahead of the (kind of insane) DVD release of season three...



... AVC: When the show first started, there was obviously a larger ensemble, but as it has progressed, Glenn has become more of an integral character and less of a supporting player. How aware of it have you been?

Steven Yeun: "I think the joy of this show is that it is an ensemble show, and I think what’s great about this particular season is that we’re really going to delve into the world and really delve into people that you might not have seen, and open up things that have already been established. There is taking on more, there is a part of that, but then there’s also taking a step back and letting other characters breathe as well, so I’m excited for people to see this season, especially. I think this is going to be the “taste-making” year."


AVC: Your most memorable scene in season three is your fight with the walker after you were strapped to the chair. Didn’t you accidentally hurt the guy who was playing the zombie?

Steven Yeun: "Yeah, I feel bad. It was Russell [Towery], our stunt coordinator, and I smacked him in the head a couple of times really bad. He just got beat up. [Michael] Rooker, when he was holding him with that little choke, that choke pole, it’s like a pincher arm, so he would accidentally pinch Russell’s throat skin, so I can only imagine that hurts really bad. That’s why I’m in the chair and he’s doing the stunts..."

... Q: Dani is a tough lady. Is that something you look for in roles?

Athena Karkanis: "Not necessarily, no. It’s an interesting part because of how she plays into the whole fabric of the story. In terms of it being Detroit and her being Arab-American — it’s just an interesting time, given the post-9/11 climate. She’s a very non-stereotypical character, which I found was refreshing. It was nice that it’s sort of like, “Oh look, they’re not just terrorists, they’re actually Americans like you and me.” Well, I’m Canadian, so not really me, but…'


Q: In Episode 2, there’s a great scene when Dani speaks in Arabic to the corner store owner. Was that difficult to prepare for?

Athena Karkanis: "The little trick under my belt is that I speak a bunch of languages, and Arabic is one of them. I also speak French, Italian, Spanish, German –- only so so -– and, of course, English. Everyone in my family is quite multilingual. We traveled a bit growing up. I went to French schools. I actually spent some time in Egypt and learned it there, most recently in December 2011, about a year after the revolution. I rented a flat in Cairo and spent about a month there. The thing about Arabic is that from country to country, the dialect and the accent are very different. I don’t know how many viewers will pick up on it, but the accent and dialect that I was doing was Egyptian, because that’s what I thought my character was. And that happens to be the kind of Arabic that I speak. I’m a bit of a Heinz 57. But I’m partially Egyptian..."

COLLIDER: Katee Sackhoff Talks LONGMIRE Season 2 Finale, Hopes for Season 3, and Nervousness About Playing the Female Lead in RIDDICK

The Season 2 finale of the A&E drama series Longmire premieres on August 26th and things are sure to be explosive. Detective Fales (Charles Dutton) returns with warrants, forcing Walt Longmire (Robert Taylor) and Henry Standing Bear (Lou Diamond Phillips) to face what happened in Denver, while Vic Moretti (Katee Sackhoff) will have to deal with what she’s been running from.

During this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, actress Katee Sackhoff talked about how excited she was to really sink her teeth into Vic’s journey this season, why she thinks Vic and Walt are able to trust each other, what’s it’s been like to work with co-star Robert Taylor, that the finale will wrap up some storylines while raising new questions, that she hopes to hear about whether Season 3 might happen early enough that they can avoid shooting in New Mexico during the hottest time of the year, and that she loves the serialized aspect of the show and is hoping for more of that, in the future. She also talked about why she’s nervous about the reaction to her work in Riddick, and how great it was to get to be a part of the “Women Who Kick Ass” panel at this year’s Comic-Con...




... Collider: This is a really unusual crime show, in the sense that it’s found a balance between serialized and procedural, and work life and personal life for the characters. Is that the best of both worlds, for you, and is that something you’d really fight for the show to keep?

Katee Sackhoff: "I actually love the serialization of the show. I hope that it goes more that direction. I think that it holds an audience and it keeps them coming back for the next week because they’re dying to know what happens to these characters. So, I love that. The procedural stuff, for me, is the most difficult because the dialogue becomes a bit more difficult to memorize."


Collider: Is it fun to also get to do something that’s part cop show and part modern-day Western, with horses hanging around?

Katee Sackhoff: "It’s weird because I’ve never ridden a horse. There was a scene, in Episode 7 [Sound and Fury], where they wanted me to do some of the stuff that Henry was doing with the horses, and they asked me how comfortable I was with horses. I’m willing to do a lot of my own stunts. I do most of my own stunts. But, when something has a mind of its own and I don’t understand the horse, at all, it’s not something I’m comfortable with, and they didn’t have the time to teach me how to do everything and get comfortable with it. So, they gave it all to Lou Diamond Phillips, which was totally fine with me..."

... Q: What do you think of The Swede’s new look?

Christopher Heyerdahl: "I think it’s great… He needs to completely change the way the way the world sees him but also how he sees himself… [The look] was actually something I brought to the table and did my best to sell to the other creatives. There’s something quite shocking about it, the image is quite biblical. And you know there’s something that happens to people who go through great stress or have some sort of shocking event in their life, they tend to lose all the pigment in their hair."


Q: The Swede is a bit of a chameleon. Is that something you share with him?

Christopher Heyerdahl: "I must. It’s me playing him. [Laughs] The Swede is a survivor. And the fact that he survived the act of killing someone so close to Cullen Bohannon… There’s no way that those two people can meet up as the two people they were on the bridge. So, transformation, rebirth, is necessary..."

... Q: At the end of last season we saw the White Walkers emerging en masse. How do you feel about the supernatural having an increased role in Game of Thrones?


Kit Harington: "In the first season everyone said, "Game of Thrones is great: it's a fantasy but there's no magic. It's really based in reality." Then as we go along the magic gradually starts coming out of the woodwork, like it does in the books, and everything starts getting very strange: you've got White Walkers, you've got witches, you've got dragons. I think that's one of the most exciting things, it creeps up on you and before you know it you're in a proper fantasy with dragons and ice zombies, but it's done in a very, very clever way. It's what the series is really about for me, peoples' worlds just falling apart. They start in quite a secure place and by the time you get to where we are now, everyone's lives are disintegrating because of the magic around them and the 'winter is coming' theme. Everything's getting blown apart. I love that about the series."


... Q: Which other character would you like to play if you could?


Kit Harington: "I've always loved Tyrion. I couldn't play him, obviously, but I think Peter [Dinklage] does such a wonderful job with him. When I was reading the books I always loved reading Jon Snow's parts because that's who I was going to play. But then I'd also get excited when I got to Tyrion's sections. Their dynamic together is intriguing as well because they like each other. I guess they're both outsiders..."

... Q) How did you come up with the concept of Ghost Shark?

Griff Furst: "Before we actually settled on the story that you have seen, there were three very, very different ideas for it. So, we knew what we wanted the villain to be when we first came up with the idea, but we weren’t too sure about the story. So, we worked together with Syfy for probably about six months just on the treatment phase and came up with three different stories. And finally the third one, the guys at Syfy thought we nailed it, and we proceeded with the screenplay from there. So, it was a bit of a lengthy process, but it was definitely for the best because the stories were very, very different before we actually nailed the right one. So, it was just a little bit of trial and error, and they were all good stories, but finding the one that was perfect took a little doing."


Q) And what was the snake story that you or Richard mentioned earlier?

Griff Furst: "Oh, that was just the actual shooting conditions."

Richard Moll: "That or a small alligator. I don’t think it was a bad as we like to paint it. We like to get melodramatic about things, but there were a few swampy areas and you wanted to be careful where you’re planting you feet, but when you’ re going at a dead run through the swamp, it’s hard to make those choices sometimes at midnight. But anyway, it was fun. In the film, when you hear a character say, “Watch out for snakes,” that was kind of our inside joke because the place was filled with snakes. So, we shot about two weeks after Hurricane Isaac came through and it brought a lot of water inland and made our beaches a little more swampy than we had hoped, and the water moccasins were quite fond of our set. So, we had people in boots with rakes and shovels trying to scare snakes away as best they can, but yes, we were dealing with a lot of snakes on the set..."

... Q: Did you get any tips from cast members on how best to deal with “roughing it” on the set?

Jennifer Ferrin: "Anson’s [Mount] first email to me was: “Be prepared for anything,” meaning weather-wise. It could literally be 80 degrees in the morning and 40 at night and it could snow or rain at any point… But shooting exterior is amazing in so many ways. I mean, you have this natural, beautiful landscape that you get to work with that’s so dynamic. The challenge becomes that it’s a time when electricity didn’t exist, so you’re dealing with candlelight, sunlight, and moonlight, but we have the most incredible Director of Photography, Marvin Rush, that I’ve ever worked with. He’s the most incredible DP on this planet."


Q: What’s it been like wearing the big, heavy period costumes?

Jennifer Ferrin: "That was definitely an adjustment. I haven’t worn a corset since drama school, and I definitely had never worn a corset while riding a horse. The layers upon and layers were great when it was cold, and a little less comfortable now that it’s gotten warm..."

Season 3 of the AMC drama series Hell on Wheels finds Cullen Bohannon (Anson Mount) leaving his vengeance-seeking ways behind and investing in the new American landscape. It is now 1867, the third year of the building of the transcontinental railroad, and Bohannon must not only contend with racism, greed and murder, as he leads the Union Pacific in its race across the country against the Central Pacific, but he now also has his former employer, Thomas “Doc” Durant (Colm Meaney), actively working to defeat him.

During this recent exclusive interview with Collider, I sat down with actor Anson Mount, who is always insightful about his character and the show, to talk about how different things feel in Season 3, what it was like to shoot by himself in a blizzard, what’s motivating Cullen Bohannon now, what it’s like to be at odds with Durant this season, what role the Mormons will play, Cullen’s relationship with women, the return of The Swede (Christopher Heyerdahl), and how no one can be trusted in Hell on Wheels...



... Collider: Where are things headed with Cullen and The Swede (Christopher Heyerdahl)?

Anson Mount: "He has his own interesting little arc this season. We have to be careful about how to introduce that character back in because it can easily become a show about a cat and mouse chase. We’re not Tom and Jerry. So, the writers have been very smart about how to bring him back in, this season. He comes back in Episode 3."

Collider: Doesn’t there have to be some big confrontation, at some point?

Anson Mount: "Yeah. He’s so good, isn’t he? He’s a lovely guy..."

... TV Equals: How would you describe Cullen’s journey in season three?

Anson Mount: "The touchstone word for me this season has been maturation because the first two seasons, I felt like I was portraying someone with an addiction, but an addiction unlike most. An addiction unlike anything I think we’ve seen portrayed in television. He has an addiction to violence as a way of coping with post traumatic stress disorder, and when you hit the rock bottom with any addiction, as he did at the end of season two, there are two ways to go. Death, or you figure out how to begin climbing out of it. That determines a certain kind of self-awareness and maturation that we’ve not seen in the character before. So that’s been overall the journey this year, self-awareness and the process of gaining that..."

SCIFI AND TV TALK: The Politician's Wife - Interview with Continuum's Sarah Edmondson

Having to navigate the waters when you are part of the political “machine” is complex and tricky. Being the spouse of someone in politics is also sometimes difficult, especially when there is the hint of a scandal. In the season one Continuum episode The Politics of Time, Jim Martin [Tahmoh Penikett], the leading candidate for the head of Vancouver’s local dock workers union, is a suspect in the murder of a journalist. Standing by Jim’s side, and perhaps knowing more than she initially lets on, is his wife Heather, played by actress Sarah Edmondson.

“Heather is quite a fun character to play,” says Edmondson. “I’m often cast as the girl next door, easygoing-type, but Heather is quite cold, and the biggest challenge is not playing her too bitchy. If you’ve seen this Continuum episode, there was also the whole question of is she innocent? Is she guilty? What role did Heather play in what happened? She’s there to support her husband Jim, played by Tahmoh Penikett.

“He’s the one in the public eye, but being his wife also comes with its challenges and trying to find that balance between how she relates to him and supports him was something Tahmoh and I spent a great deal of time on. The two of us are both very dedicated actors, and we looked at what it would take to fill out or flesh out our character’s back story as well as their relationship. I don’t know if other people picked that up, but I feel like it’s there, and Tahmoh and I built a very solid foundation that carried over very nicely to the second episode that I did this year.”

No stranger to the audition process, Edmondson had read once or twice for roles on Continuum, and although it took her more than one shot to ultimately book the part of Heather Martin, it was well worth the wait.

“Whenever I went in to read for the show I’d think, ‘Wow, what a great series,’ and I had a wonderful experience with the audition process,” she notes. ‘The show runner and creative mind behind the whole thing, Simon Barry, is often in the casting room, and every time I went in, he made me feel very welcome and safe. Oftentimes the audition process can be somewhat tough, but Simon is always very warm and kind, so I loved auditioning for them. By the time I went in for Heather, I felt like I was going in and seeing family, which was nice..."

STARPULSE: 'Hell On Wheels' Star Anson Mount Talks Season 3 Of The AMC Series

We were fortunate enough to catch up with Anson Mount on the phone to talk about AMC's hit series Hell on Wheels. For the few of you who don't know, Hell on Wheels is a Western television series in its third season. Set in the 1800's, the series centers on the settlement that accompanied the construction of the first transcontinental railroad, referred to as "Hell on Wheels." Anson plays the main character, Cullen Bohannan, a former soldier and extremely determined man on a hunt to avenge his murdered wife and son.

The series is averaging three million viewers an episode and is gaining popularity at a rapid rate, it's scheduled for a two hour premiere Saturday, August 10th at 9/8c.

... Starpulse: How has it been being back to work on this project again?

Anson Mount: "It's the best job of my life! I love riding the horses and being out here in beautiful Calgary shooting the series. I absolutely love everything about what I do."


Starpulse: I heard John Wirth is the new executive producer of the show; how is that going?

Anson Mount: "Wonderful. I think he's doing a wonderful job. He's a great writer and he's a great director. He fits right in with everything going on and has a great vision for the show."

One of the most highly anticipated showsof the upcoming fall TV season is Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Clark Gregg reprises his role as Agent Phil Coulson from Marvel’s feature films, as he assembles a small, highly select group of Agents, who together will investigate the new, the strange and the unknown, across the globe, in order to protect the ordinary from the extraordinary. The show also stars Ming-Na Wen, Brett Dalton, Iain De Caestecker, Elizabeth Henstridge and Chloe Bennet.

While at the ABC portion of the TCA Press Tour, executive producer Joss Whedon talked about the trust they have in making this show, how refreshing it is to be part of a series where he’s not the primary showrunner, the format they’re looking to follow on a weekly basis, why it’s important for this team to not have superpowers, whether or not this was always the plan for Agent Coulson, that the mystery of Coulson will unravel throughout the season, whether more actors from the Marvel movies could make appearances on the show, how often they’ll tie things into the world of the films, and what all of his work with Marvel means for a Dr. Horrible sequel...


... Collider: What sort of format are you looking to follow, on a weekly basis?

Joss Whedon: "There’s not going to be some new hero, every week. There could be a device. There could be a mystery. There are so many aspects to what’s happened, since everybody in the world found out that there is a superhero team and there were aliens that invaded New York, and we want to be able to change it up, every week. We want to be able to deal with every aspect – the spy stuff, the hero stuff, the heartfelt stuff, the humor. We want to make sure that you get something that feels a little bit different, so it’s not just turkey, every day."


Collider: How important is it for the members of this team to not be super-powered?


Joss Whedon:  "The thing that appealed to me about this show, from the very beginning, is the idea of the people who don’t have the superpowers, who didn’t get the hammer and who didn’t, get the super soldier serum, and the idea that everybody matters. There’s very much a sense of, “Well, what about the rest of us? How do we cope with this?” And so, yeah, it was important that our core team, while they are extraordinary and incredibly good at what they do and ridiculously attractive, they don’t fall under the category of super..."

Specifically, Chase plays Branch Connally, the ambitious deputy of the title character in Longmire, the popular A&E series based on the western-mystery novels by Craig Johnson...




... Cowboys & Indians: What do you think are the most important things you discovered about Branch Connally during season one?

Bailey Chase: "Well, the thing to remember is, my character is the only main character who’s not established in the books. And so I had some questions coming in to the series about who this guy was. I just wanted him to be able to be his own man, and not just a one-note bad guy or adversary. Obviously, the writers came through on every front over the course of the first season, and they wrote really well for Branch. And I’m really happy where we’re picking up in season two, right where we left off.

Branch and Longmire are still going head to head. But, again, he’s also becoming more and more of his own man. Walt has a few years on him — and some more experience and wisdom. But I feel like Branch is closing the gap..."
