HAVEN - THE MORTON REPORT: Truths, Lies, Troubles & Turmoil: Interview With Haven's Emily Rose And Eric Balfour
By Steve Eramo
July 15, 2011
It was a year ago that FBI Agent Audrey Parker came to the small Maine coastal town of Haven on a routine case. Soon after arriving, she was caught up in “The Troubles,” a series of supernatural events that had plagued the town at least once before. At the same time, the FBI agent discovered a newspaper clipping about the 1983 murder of “The Colorado Kid,” with a photo of a woman named Lucy who looked just like her. An orphan, Audrey wondered if Lucy was her mother or at least another relation. She subsequently decided to quit the FBI and took a job with the Haven Police Department in order to stay in town and hopefully learn more about Lucy.
By the time Haven’s first season was winding down, Audrey had uncovered additional evidence that forced her to consider that she, in fact, might be Lucy. As if this was not unnerving enough for her, at the very end of the season one finale “Spiral,” a woman claiming to be FBI Agent Audrey Parker shows up in town. Talk about a case of mistaken identity. So where does this leave our heroine, not to mention the actress who plays her, Emily Rose, when Haven return[ed] Friday, July 15th on Syfy with its second season opener, “The Tale of Two Audreys.”
“Season two picks up right where we left off last year and I think viewers are going to be really excited about that,” says Rose, during a break in filming on Haven’s Nova Scotia, Canada set. “Audrey is on the beach when this stranger - who we call Fraudrey [Kathleen Moore} - comes up to her and says that she is the real Audrey Parker. That, of course, turns my character’s world upside down, and my big question to the show’s producers and writers was, ‘How do I move forward from this?’
... Audrey Parker is not alone as far as personal turmoil this year on Haven. In “Spiral,” her friend and partner, Police Officer Nathan Wuornos (Lucas Bryant), discovered some shocking truths about his past that he is trying to deal with. Meanwhile, actor Eric Balfour’s character of the town’s jack-of-all-trades-cum-restaurant-owner Duke Crocker continues to live his days in constant fear for his life.
“Duke is in the middle of trying to track down the meaning of these mysterious tattooed people and this possible death ring that’s coming for him,” notes Balfour. “The most enjoyable part of playing this character is that Duke is sort of a ‘pirate’ and he does whatever he feels like, so I can sort of be silly and funny with him. This season, however, is much darker than last year and it feels like everything has been amped up. The stakes are definitely raised for him emotionally. Duke is going to find out a number of truths about his family as well as his destiny here in Haven. The biggest [acting] challenge for me with that is maintaining a balance between what I love about the character and how funny and playful he is and the heightened sense of drama that is currently going on in his life...”

By Russ Frushtick
Fans of creepy towns in New England full of cooky inhabitants and supernatural goings-on know the best man for the job is Stephen King. He's been doing this sort of thing for decades, you see. One of his latest novels on the subject matter, 2005's "The Colorado Kid," was picked up by Syfy and turned into "Haven," a full TV series based on the creepy, titular town. The show stars Audrey Parker (Emily Rose), an FBI agent sent to Haven, ME for a routine case. But, as routine cases usually go in Stephen King projects, things get weird, fast. The show's first season aired last year and developed a cult following. On July 15, the show return[ed] for season two. We sat down with Emily Rose to catch us up with the strange goings on up north.

MONSTERS AND CRITICS: EXCLUSIVE: Torchwood: Miracle Day writer Jane Espenson interview
By Ian Cullen
Jul 15, 2011
Jane Espenson is a very familiar name to fans of genre television. Over the last decade Espenson has been involved with many highly thought of science fiction and fantasy series such as "Buffy The Vampire Slayer", "Battlestar Galactica", "Caprica" and now "Torchwood." Not to mention the recent HBO juggernaut, "Game of Thrones."
Next week fans will have the chance to meet and talk with Jane Espenson about her experiences on "Torchwood: Miracle Day" at the San Diego Comic-Con, but M&C recently caught up with the much-loved writer and discussed her "Torchwood" experience among other things...
... M&C: I’ve read that the episodes you have written are 5 and 7. Without spoiling things too much. What can you tell us about those episodes and how do you think they connect to the overall story.
Jane Espenson: "I wrote 3, 5 and 7. I also co-wrote episodes 8 and 10, but as my solo efforts, 3, 5 and 7 are my babies. In no particular order, to preserve suspense- one of them is a "dark night of the soul" episode – a chance for the characters to catch their breath and take stock of their situation as it stands at that point in the story.
I like episodes like this because they are so much about character. One of them involves a romance, which was great fun to write. And the other is tense action and shocking revelations.
I love that I was given three such different episodes to write. And I love that such a short season – only ten episodes – would offer such a variety of tones..."

HAVEN - CINEMASPY: Haven Has More Questions than Answers for Emily Rose
By Michael Simpson
July 15, 2011
In this, the second of the Q&As we are bringing you to mark the premiere of Season Two of Haven on Syfy and Showcase, series star Emily Rose talks about working in the rainy but beautiful seaside village of Chester, Nova Scotia, how her character faces the challenge of coming to terms with a loss of identity and how she learned to take care of herself, especially if armed with a tube of cover-up...
... In Haven, Rose plays Audrey Parker, who initially comes to the titular seaside town in Maine on an investigation for the FBI. Intrigued, however, by a photograph she discovers that seems to show her in the town many years earlier, she decides to stay and try to solve the mystery. But her pursuit of answers throughout Season One only makes things murkier, especially when she realizes that she might not even be who she thought she was when she arrived...
... Q: What was it like to work with Jason Priestley this season and what does he bring to the show?
Emily Rose: "It was awesome. He’s such a great guy. You hear about this Canadian icon, you hear Jason Priestley and plus, you know, 90210. I’d worked with Luke Perry in the past as well, so I kind of had a little bit of just going, “Oh, I’ve kind of worked with one of your friends before.” But he’s just so down to earth and just fantastic and really giving and really collaborative. Not only is he a great actor to work alongside, he’s a really great director and I go to work with him in that capacity as well. He directed one of our episodes this season and so it was just great. There was no pretense and there was no… He’s just so down to earth that it was fun to work alongside him and it gave a new dynamic between Nathan and Audrey and Duke and Audrey. It’s just interesting to play with that..."

EUREKA - THE PROVINCE: The nerd they can't do without
From bit-part beginning, Vancouver actor now a regular in sci-fi series Eureka
By Glen Schaefer
July 16, 2011
I call him "exposition guy," the character who has the thankless job of explaining stuff in TV shows and movies with a technical or scientific theme.
"The main generator is overheating and, if we don't get the flux cylinders back in sync, we'll be in a meltdown within 20 minutes," says exposition guy, as he's peering anxiously at a computer screen.
That was Vancouver actor Neil Grayston's job when he started on the quirky sci-fi series Eureka five years ago, but it got better.
"They didn't even really know what they were looking for," says Grayston of that long-ago casting call. His character, Douglas Fargo, was described as the "mousey assistant," and actors of all shapes, ages and sizes were brought in to read...
... They're currently in the middle of Season 5 shooting that started last April, as the fourth season premiered this month on U.S. TV screens (it debuts in Canada this fall).
So when Grayston goes on the road to promote the show, he has to remember the fourth season work he did last year, while taking care not to give away spoilers for episodes that won't air for another year...

Gorgeous Italian locations upstage the drama in this ongoing mystery

Even if I could afford to take a trip to Rome this summer, I probably couldn't spare the time, what with an unprecedented number of new TV shows premiering across broadcast and cable dials through months which once used to be quite fallow.
Kudos to PBS, I supposed, for solving one problem while compounding another.
"Zen," which premieres this Sunday (July 17), may have added a few hours of work to my weekend, but with its rather magnificent use of locations in and around Rome, it took the place of of a quick getaway to Italy. [Please, though, don't ask me what kind of vacation to Italy lasts only three hours, doesn't include a single strand of homemade pasta and forces me to take notes the entire time.]
Based on the novel series by Michael Dibdin, "Zen" unfolds in three mysteries airing over the next three Sundays and is it any good? Well, as whodunnit? It's not really all that involving. But as a low-cost getaway to Europe? It serves its purpose admirably. Temper your expectations accordingly and you'll find some value in "Zen," even if the thrills are lacking...

Zen is no antihero — he's instantly likable and nearly unswervingly good (he won't even accept a free coffee) — but he's just as fascinating. Perhaps it's the way he bickers with his office nemesis (Ed Stoppard), romances the kindhearted department secretary (Bond girl Caterina Murino), and manipulates the slimy government lackey (Coupling's Ben Miles) who wants every case wrapped up in his boss' favor. Or simply how he chain-smokes, inhales espresso, and fills out an Italian suit. Either way, add Rome as a backdrop, a throwback '60s score, and freaky whodunits about everything from cave dwellers to hookers to the Vatican, and you have PBS' best mystery import in years.
