Actor Brian J. Smith has been leading a prominent career as an American actor, having just finished his first prominent role as the character of Lieutenant Matthew Scott on Syfy’s Stargate Universe for the show’s two seasons. The actor also recently featured on Syfy’s recent movie, Red Faction Origins, which is based on the actual video game franchise as the character of Jake Mason. This particular movie took place after the events of Guerrilla and before the events of the upcoming Armageddon game.

With SGU having concluded its run just a couple of months ago and Smith being kind enough to participate in an interview with us, we discuss the actor’s experience in portraying the character of Matthew Scott, his frank perspective on the factors which resulted in SGU’s cancellation as well as Smith’s thoughts on the suitability of Gauntlet as a series finale to SGU. The actor also reflects on the development of his young Lieutenant Scott and the slightly different hopes which he had for the extent of his character’s development.

Smith also discusses how working on the show influenced his acting career as well as his professional life, reflects on some of his favourite moments working on SGU, and his final message to fans, with the show having drawn to a close.

... AK: You starred as the character of Jake on Syfy’s Red Faction Origin aired on Syfy last month. Could you please describe how the role of Jake was different from your previous roles, such as that of Lt Scott? Also,in terms of production, how would you compare working on a TV show of an established franchise, such as Stargate to working on a movie, such as Red Factions ,which is also a part of a great franchise? Which do you prefer?

BJS: "Well, SGU had the disadvantage of fan expectation. The only expectation regarding Red Faction was that it would suck. So people were actually surprised that some thought went into Red Faction and that we tried to tell a good story and not just blow stuff up. That being said, Stargate had lots of financial heft behind it, and I guess that’s the benefit of coming out of an established franchise. But Red Faction was an experiment and we shot that film on a very tight budget. Michael Nankin is the single best director I’ve ever worked with, and watching him create what he created with very little resources was a real lesson in directing. Directing is easy when you get unlimited takes, months of prep time, millions of dollars for special effects. Spielberg would have had a nervous breakdown. Michael Bay would have cried. The challenges he had to overcome were unbelievable. There was a medic on set who gave him the Bulgarian equivalent of Thera-Flu when he was getting a cold and he was actually fighting to stay awake all day. He somehow got through it, but that should give you some idea of what he was up against. And he also approached the story in an emotional way every single day, he was fully invested, which really isn’t easy to do when the set is falling apart and one of your actors is so ill that they can’t work and you’re running on five hours of sleep and the set medic has basically drugged you. He’s a real-life bad-ass. He taught me that who you choose to be when you’re faced with the impossible defines you..."

Syfy’s new telefilm RED FACTION: ORIGINS, premiering Saturday at 9 PM, is a live-action film produced in partnership with videogame company THQ. It is set in the universe of THQ’s RED FACTION videogame franchise. The original game involved a group of miners on Mars rebelling against the oppressive government on Earth. ORIGINS takes place between the games RED FACTION: GUERILLA and RED FACTION: ARMAGEDDON, picking up twenty years after the original rebellion. Red Faction leader Alec Mason, played in the telefilm by Robert Patrick, has become seriously disillusioned with how things have worked out now that Mars is governing itself. However, his son Jake Mason, played by Brian J. Smith, is ready to challenge the new world order.

... ASSIGNMENT X: Since you were already working for Syfy on SGU, did that factor into them bringing you in for RED FACTION: ORIGINS?

SMITH: Yeah. Erica McNair, who was sort of our point person at Syfy for SGU, knew my work. She was really familiar with what I did and I guess I didn’t piss too many people off [laughs] and I think they thought this would be not just a good role for me, but it would be a challenging one and this would be the kind of project that would be really fun to work with me on and for me to work with them on. It a great, great stretching experience, because there were things I got to do in this that I think I probably might have eventually gotten to do on STARGATE, but hadn’t really gotten to yet...

Andrew Kreisberg wrote the screenplay for this weekend’s Syfy movie, Red Faction: Origins, based on an idea from THQ, creators of the popular video game. The story takes place between the previous video game, Guerilla, and the upcoming Armageddon and features Jake Mason, the son of Alec Mason, and father of Darius Mason, the respective leads in the two games. Andrew is also currently the co-executive producer of Warehouse 13, one of the most popular series on Syfy, and previously served in a similar role on Fringe and The Vampire Diaries. Andrew recently took the time to sit down with MediaBlvd for an exclusive interview in which he discussed the upcoming movie, and the challenges of developing a new entry, albeit in a different medium, for an existing franchise...

... MediaBlvd> Is it difficult to lay the origin out enough that anyone who hasn’t played the game will understand it for the movie?

Andrew> Yeah, we tried a bunch of different ways to condense the first three games into a prologue, and I think we came up with a fairly clever way to do it; basically just setting up the idea that there is a colony on Mars, that it is several hundred years in the future, and that there had previously been a conflict between the marauders and the colonists, and that they had all been controlled by the Earth Defense Force which had subsequently been driven off the planet. Now that is all information from the previous video games and our movie picks up 25 years after that. So we give the audience a primer on what happened before, which you will have to watch to see. But once you are into the movie, we make it pretty clear what is going on and you see that the world itself is just so exciting and pretty straight forward. So new people will instantly get pulled in...

Brian J. Smith got his big acting break coming into the Stargate franchise’s third installment, playing Lt. Matthew Scott, the young military officer who frequently found himself placed in dangerous off world situations on a weekly basis. After Stargate Universe, which recently aired it’s final episode, ended, Brian found himself in Bulgaria filming another entry into an existing franchise, this time with Red Faction: Origins, which airs on Syfy this week, and may potentially lead to an on-going series. Brian is Jake Mason, the lead of the film which is directed by Battlestar favorite, Michael Nankin and which also stars Kate Vernon and Robert Patrick. The movie is set in the universe of the Red Faction series of video games, and takes place after Guerilla and before the events of the upcoming Armageddon. Brian recently spoke in-depth to MediaBlvd about filming the movie, about how much he likes this new character, and also about his time as Scott on Stargate Universe...

... MediaBlvd> How was it working with Robert Patrick? I assume you must have worked pretty closely together since you play father and son? And were you a fan of his at all before this?

Brian> Oh yeah, I grew up with that “bad-ass-arm-turning-into-a-sword” kind of guy. That’s how I knew him, but what I didn’t know was that he has a reputation for being one of the most interesting actors out there right now. I don’t know if you’ve seen him on The Sopranos or a lot of the films he’s done. But he’s quietly done some amazing performances. He’s just this really outstanding actor. He reminds me of Robert Carlye in a way, because he knows what he is doing so well he doesn’t have to do anything. He’ll just show up and be himself, and let whatever happens happen. We’re all acting our asses off and he is just sitting there breathing and is the best part of the scene without doing anything. He’s a nice guy and funny and has a really great energy about him. And he couldn’t have been nicer to me. There are some of these guys that you work with, like Lou Diamond Phillips or Robert Carlyle, and now Robert Patrick. These guys have every excuse to be butt holes on set, and they’re not. They are just incredibly nice and humble on set and are just grateful to be working, and are very generous to actors like me who really look up to them...

Kate Vernon captivated sci fi fans with her portrayal of the broken Ellen Tigh, the wife of number two, Col. Saul Tigh, on the re-imaged Battlestar Galactica. In the final episodes though, her star was set as an Icon in the sci-fi universe when it was revealed that Ellen was the hidden fifth Cylon, somewhat the leader of the previous race of human/robotic inhabitants of a distant Earth who gave birth to the human like Cylons who were the protagonists of the series. Now Kate returns to the Syfy family as a lead in this weekend’s movie, Red Faction: Origins, based on the popular video game series. Her character is another strong woman known as The Matriarch, and plays an important part in the movie’s major plot development. The film is being hailed as a potential backdoor pilot, which may spin off a new series for the cable network.

Kate recently spoke to MediaBlvd in an exclusive interview, both about the new role and her experiences filming in Bulgaria and working with director Michael Nankin, as well as the revelation of her true nature in Battlestar Galactica...



... MediaBlvd> Who does The Matriarch interact with? Are we going to see you on the screen with Brian J. Smith and Robert Patrick?

Kate> Yes, both of them. Robert Patrick is my ex-lover. So she had to give up him because he was not of royal blood. This woman is duty bound, so she gave up the love of her life. Then her sister defects and runs off with Robert Patrick’s character and has his son, who is Jake. And so it’s all very family tied, and it’s very connected. So I’ve got this deep betrayal because my sister got the man I loved. Then I have a son with someone else, and it’s not clear who, but it’s a son. And I needed a daughter. So I have these two huge wounds. But I have a lot of scenes with Brian J. Smith, who carries this movie. He has such a heavy heart, and he didn’t mean to bring these two warring communities together, but it evolved in the most beautiful way, and he emerges as this incredible hero. He does such an incredible job. And Robert Patrick was divine. He was so rich and so soulful. I worked with him as a hologram, so it’s a cold scene. The character might come off as cold because she is trying to protect and defend her people. But she is mostly seen as a hologram except for in the final scene with who plays my son.

Syfy’s original films tend to be some of the silliest bits captured on the small screen, involving the likes of bloodthirsty rocks or flying sharks.

So the idea of the cable network partnering with video-game developer THQ to create a film based on one of its titles sounds about as appealing as a recipe for Cheez-It Jell-O Salad.

Instead of being one of the lamest infomercials ever made (the new “Red Faction: Armageddon” video game just happens to come out Tuesday), “Red Faction: Origins” tweaks a familiar plot with some snappy dialogue, a reasonably adept cast and the occasional surprise.

Part “Searchers,” with shuttles by “Space: 1999,” special effects courtesy of “Lost in Space,” sets lifted from “Doctor Who” and a tone still raspy from “Battlestar Galactica,” “Red Faction: Origins” is surprisingly light on violence for a production based on a third-person shooter video game. The terra-formed Mars looks like a mash of Gotham City and Afghanistan. The towns are named after famous sci-fi writers (Asimov, Bradbury). The future is gross, dirty and smelly, and teenagers still like to tune out adults with mp3 players.

One running gag hinges on Tess’ insecurity about not being native. “It’s not easy being Earth-born. I have to work twice as hard to prove to everybody that I belong,” she says.

“Red Faction: Origins” is light-years brighter than the typical Syfy Saturday dreck.

LOS ANGELES - The Syfy cable channel original film "Red Faction: Origins" takes place on Mars. Star Kate Vernon jokes she may have a guess at what life would be like there after filming the movie during the winter in Bulgaria.

"It was very, VERY cold," Vernon says.

Chilling experience aside, the stark location did help the actors get into the story of the Mason family, Martian colonists who must battle for survival and freedom during a war between two factions. Vernon plays the matriarch of the desert-dwelling marauders.

The film is based on a video game, but Vernon found the script to be deep.

"What drew me to my character was this conflict she has as a woman. She's a mother and she's the ruler of this matriarchal society. But, she bore a son and she had to give up her son because he was of no value to her..." Vernon says.

Red Faction: Origins is a made-for-SyFy sci-fi TV movie based on a first-person shooter video game - one of popular entertainment's more tiresome ideas - but this one is a step up from the usual giant-squid-vs.-man-eating-shark SyFy flick.

Robert Patrick, of Terminator II and late-seasons X-Files fame, plays Alec Mason. Brian J. Smith plays his son, Jake. Together, father and son are freedom fighters in a rebel group that calls itself the Red Faction; the baddies are represented by the Earth Defense Force, a.k.a. Big Government.

Who are you rooting for? Careful, now. They may be watching.

MICHAEL NANKIN: [laughs] What a nightmare, really.

KATE VERNON: [laughs] Impossible. He’s like my husband. We fight. Well, [seriously] we’ve had the pleasure of working on many shows since Battlestar. So I just feel so lucky to continue to be hired by this man. We have a great working relationship. So it just gets better and better.

NANKIN: Aside from the fact that it’s always a delight to work with close friends. I never have to worry if I can get Kate on the show. I just know that that role is going to be brilliant. I know it’s taken care of and that my job will be on the level of finesse rather then trying to create something because she always delivers on a very, very high level...

Danielle: "Set was in Eastern Europe. So it was a culture shock for all of us…and very, very cold…just like Mars! We had some challenges, but it really was all for the best. The hardships that come with life on Mars were easy to portray, and we bonded as a cast in a way that I never have before on a movie. I mean it when I say that, Brian J. Originally from Dallas, Texas, Brian J. Smith is a graduate of the four-year acting program at The Julliard School in New York City. Since graduation, Smith has starred in the feature film “The War Boys,” written by award-winning playwright Naomi Wallace and Bruce McLeod, and appeared in the thriller “Redhook.” Both pictures were released in 2009.

In addition to his leading role as First Lieutenant Matthew Scott on Syfy’s “Stargate Universe” series, Smith starred on the ITV television movie “Poirot: Murder on the Orient Express” and appeared on NBC’s “Law & Order.” Smith performed on Broadway in “Come Back, Little Sheba” opposite Epatha Merkerson, and off-Broadway in “Good Boys,” “True” and “Three Changes,” opposite Dylan McDermott and Maura Tierney.

This is an interview with Brian J. Smith (Jake Mason), Kate Vernon (The Matriarch), Director Michael Nankin, and Writer/Executive Producer Andrew Kreisberg on May 31, 2011 about the Original Syfy movie Red Faction Origins.

In the film, twenty-five years have passed since Alec Mason led the Martian Colonies to freedom... and 12 years since vengeful enemies killed his wife, kidnapped his daughter Lyra, and left a broken hero in their wake. Jake Mason, Alec’s last surviving son and an officer in the Red Faction Militia, has his world turned inside out when he discovers that now, 12 years after her kidnapping, his sister is still alive. As a powerful new enemy swarms across the planet, Jake goes out to find her, only to learn that his lost sister is one of them... a cold-blooded soldier sworn to destroy the Red Faction. Jake must now battle the relentless regime and somehow reunite a family torn apart by war...


... Question: So would you say that this movie would be just as good if it didn't take place on Mars and this happened on earth in the 1920s or something?

Andrew Kreisberg: "Well it's funny. One of the first conversations I had with Brian was I said to him when we were talking about how to play Jake, I said, "Just substitute the Red Faction militia for the LA police department and play it the exact same way." It really is about a father and a son and parental issues and it's about survivor's guilt. It's about loss and reconnection. I mean all the themes and the problems that people are dealing with, whether it's survivor's guilt or alcoholism, those are the universal themes that play whether it's the 1920s, whether it's the present day or whether it's 300 years in the future on a terra-formed Mars."

Brian J. Smith: "The thing that I always thought about was this is like a Western. This is about as close as I've ever gotten to shooting a Western. And it's funny that we actually talked a lot about the film, The Searchers, while we shot it. So whether it's on Mars or wherever, as long as it's got that humanity in it, it's fantastically awesome to play."

Andrew Kreisberg: "Although it got very annoying when Brian kept asking for a horse."

Kate Vernon: "There are no horses on Mars, dang it."

Andrew Kreisberg: "Over and over, we had to tell him that."

Brian J. Smith: "And all I really wanted was a Snapple..."

Half a century after the Red Faction resistance and their Marauder allies freed Mars from the brutal Earth Defense Force, harmony on Mars is again threatened but this time by a lethal force shrouded in mystery.

Produced by the SyFy channel in conjunction with THQ, "Red Faction: Origins" is a made-for-TV movie designed to bridge the narrative gap between the events of 2009's Red Faction: Guerrilla and the upcoming Red Faction: Armageddon. Set halfway between the two games, the film stars Kate Vernon (Battlestar Galactica, Heroes). We caught up with Vernon last week at a "Red Faction: Origins" premiere event in San Francisco, Calif., and chatted about the production experience and video games...

... WP: Production-wise, computer graphics have become much more film-like, but that also means that there's more use of green screen and aftereffects. What's it like as an actor when you're trying to react or interact with things that aren't there while you're filming?

KV: "This is my first time with green screen. Even though I was on "Battlestar," I did not have to work on green screens. We're working on a freezing, sub-zero set, so it was very difficult, trying and challenging circumstances. On top of it, I'm having to re-create in my mind everything that I'm — it was wild. As an actress, I found it really fascinating, and I could see it being a wonderful challenge. It's like, if an actor puts on a mask, it frees you up to do so many things and be whatever. The same thing — when it's just your imagination, it informs you in a really different way. Because we shot so late at night and it was so cold, to be honest, I was on survival mode. I was thinking as I'm shooting, "Wow, it would be nice if this went to series because then I could really get into this green screen thing and nurture this experience." But I didn't have that luxury while we were shooting. (laughs) I find it fascinating, though..."

RED FACTION: ORIGINS - SHOW PATROL: Brian J. Smith: 'Red Faction: Origins' won't suck

When Brian J. Smith's agent first approached him with the offer to star in the upcoming Syfy movie, “Red Faction: Origins,” the actor was less than thrilled.

"I immediately was like, 'No, no, no,'" Smith, who play[ed] Lt. Matthew Scott on “Stargate Universe,” told me in February, admitting that he'd seen many a Syfy Saturday B-movie. “They’re fun for what they are, [but] they’re kind of shitastic. Do you know what I mean? Which is awesome. There is a kind of tongue-in-cheek quality about them.”

“Red Faction,” he said, will be a step above Syfy's movies of the week. ("Mega Python vs. Gatoroid" comes to mind.) "It's definitely quality and it has really, really smart minds behind it. … This is not going to be another MOW. It just isn’t...”

... You’ve obviously seen some of those Syfy Saturday movies. … They’re totally critic-proof. You almost have to revel in the badness of them.

Brian J. Smith: "Yeah, exactly. So [when I was aproached] I thought, “I don’t know” and “I'm sure it’s fun, but it doesn’t sound like the kind of fun to be having right now.” … I read and it was really freaking good, like really, really good. I called and said, “Who is directing this?” It was Michael Nankin and I kind of spun that name around my head, because I know I’d seen it many, many times somewhere and then it finally hit me: He has directed some of my favorite “Battlestar [Galactica]” episodes, like “Scar” and I think “Rise of the Phoenix.” I knew with that script and with a director that had that kind of sensibility and came from that “Battlestar” world that something pretty cool could come out of it. Plus, it was the first time I had played a lead; it was a big, meaty, huge role to play with a lot going on and it just seemed like a really cool thing to do.

And it was amazing. ... It was hard. It was very cold. I mean it was like –12 Celsius at certain points, and we were outside quite a bit..."

Red Faction premieres this Saturday on SyFy, and to gear up for the movie we’ve sat down with one of the stars of the movie, Danielle Nicolet, whom you might remember from “3rd Rock from the Sun,” “Family Matters,” “Stargate SG-1″ and “Heartland” amongst many other projects. Danielle plays Tess DeLaVega, sidekick to Robert Patrick’s character.

... Entopia: How faithful does the movie stay to the video game’s universe?

Danielle: The film really uses the video game as a framework and makes it’s own world. The game is much more about the battles to save Mars. The movie really focuses on the backstory and the lives and relationships of the characters. You find out who Alec Mason really is, and why he fought. In my opinion it really rounds out the whole gaming experience for the fans, but is a true stand alone story for anyone who hasn’t played the games...

... The show’s star Brian J. Smith said about his involvement with the film, “this is not a retelling of the game’s story line, but a story based in the Red Faction’s world. It is a fantastic story direction, I had a great time portraying the character and felt connected to his story."
