Nature - PBS Video: 'Ocean Giants' Episode Trailer Airs Feb 22 '12

Source: PBS

Whales and dolphins conjure a deep sense of wonder in us that’s hard to explain. From the Arctic to the Amazon, this groundbreaking three-part series goes on a global expedition with world-renowned underwater cameramen, Doug Allen (Planet Earth) and Didier Noirot (Jacques Cousteau’s cameraman), as they capture spellbinding footage of these marine mammals. Ocean Giants looks at how cetaceans hunt, mate, and communicate, and follows scientists as they strive to uncover new insights about these animals.

The first hour, Giant Lives, enters the world of the great whales. In the Arctic, giant bowhead whales survive the freezing cold wrapped in fifty tons of insulating blubber two-feet thick, making them the fattest animals on the planet. But the biggest animal on the planet is the blue whale. Measuring a hundred feet long, and weighing in at 200 tons, it is double the size of the largest dinosaur.

The second hour, Deep Thinkers, explores the cognitive and emotional lives of dolphins and whales. Like us, cetaceans have special brain cells, spindle cells, that are associated with communication, emotion, and heightened social sensitivity. These cells were once thought to be unique to us, but research is now showing that whales and dolphins may have up to three times more spindle cells than humans.

Marine mammals’ extrasensory perceptions and communication skills are the focus of Voices of the Sea, the final hour of the series. Whales and dolphins depend on sound to function in their ocean home. They use ultrasound to see inside other creatures, clicks and whistles to speak, and echolocation to navigate and hunt in the pitch-black depths.

Join PBS Nature, as it dives into the world of whales and dolphins, and reveals the secrets of their intimate lives like never before. Ocean Giants premieres on Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at 8/7C.

BOSTON HERALD: Kiss and tell

Canada’s Anna Silk talks about the ‘Lost’ arc

By Amy Amatangelo
Sunday, February 19, 2012

When Anna Silk first heard about “Lost Girl,” she thought it was a joke.

My initial thought was, ‘Are you kidding me?’ What is this?’ ”Silk said.

In the series (tomorrow at 10 on Syfy), Silk stars as Bo, a woman who discovers she is Fae, a creature who passes as human but needs sex to survive. Her kiss can kill and it often does...

Anna Silk Wallpaper

... Once Silk read the pilot script, she realized the show was much deeper than its sound bite.

Even though she’s not human and she’s going to be thrown into this crazy world, she’s a very relatable character,Silk said. “She’s intensely vulnerable and also has to grow and find her way, and there’s a lot of growth for her in the series. (Her) journey is just so huge...”

Lost Girl season two premieres Monday, April 16, 2012 on Syfy.

Vampire Diaries

February 2012
by: Lisa Steinberg

... Q: With the introduction of Klaus’s brothers Kol (Nathaniel Buzolic) and Finn (Casper Zafer) coming up, is there anything you can tease about what we’ll learn or see from them?

Joseph Morgan: "Yes. First of all, both of these guys are awesome as people and as actors. I really, really like both of them. From Finn, we can see, this is a guy who has been in the coffin for hundreds of years, so with him coming back he’s going to find it very strange, I think, the modern world. He’s definitely got a sort of archaic feel to him, he’s definitely a little older, and his loyalties certainly aren’t with Klaus. He’s very old school in his thinking. Kol we’re going to see is someone who can hold his own a little bit more against Klaus. He’s my younger brother, but he’s malicious. I’d say to Nathaniel that Kol is the kind of character that you can imagine torturing animals..."

The Vampire Diaries airs Thursday at 8/7C on The CW
