Stargate Universe - GateWorld: Jamil Walker Smith Interview

STARGATE UNIVERSE - GATEWORLD: Measure of a Man
November 20, 2011
by Chad Colvin
It’s been a bit over a year since the last time GateWorld had the pleasure of sitting down with Jamil Walker Smith, but it’s been an interesting year. Where our first chat with the actor was a chance to get to know both him and his character — Ronald Greer — a bit more fully, the experience this time was a bit more somber as it came with the knowledge that Stargate Universe (and the franchise as a whole) would not be continuing in any form this television season — and perhaps many more. But while Smith may have said his final goodbyes to his Destiny alter-ego, he’s definitely not giving any other farewells.
We caught up to Smith earlier this year at the Vancouver edition of the Creation Entertainment Official Stargate Convention, where he graciously sat down with us for an extended period. In our chat with Jamil Walker Smith, the actor talks about the status of his self-produced and directed film, Greer’s evolution in SGU‘s final year, what he’ll take away from his time on the series, the current state of genre programming and its viewership, and more!
... GW: We witnessed, especially in the last year, the death of several great sci-fi series like Caprica. Brad [Wright] had to tell fans that there was not going to be a continuation on SGU of any sort. To a degree, it kind of seems like serious sci-fi is going through some…
JWS: "People don’t … I wouldn’t say people aren’t ready for it … well, finish your question."
GW: Do you think it’s more a case of people needing lighter fair and escapism? Or is it just a sign of maybe the genre’s slow decline?
JWS: "No, science fiction has existed since the dawn of time. Someone told a story about a star. And gave meaning to it. And the possibility of something greater and bigger than where we exist. The fundamental principles that are even tied to religion are based in a science that explores something beyond what is tangible or real. So science fiction will never ever die as long as we have the ability to use our imagination.
I would say, and I can’t speak for the world because I haven’t gone every place in the world. But I can say in the country that I am proud to come from — America – there is a sense of doom and hopelessness that is fast approaching and that we are in the midst of. And it is as a result of our political system. It has finally caught up to us and is now affecting everyday people’s lives. So in that, I understand that there is a great sense for people to want to escape even deeper into things that don’t make them have to dwell on their issues. You know? They feel horrible about their job situation, and they feel helpless as a result of not being able to afford the lifestyle that they used to. So sometimes, there is this idea you don’t want to come home and watch people in those exact same circumstances. You want to escape into worlds that use humor and where the lighting is bright and does things that don’t reflect the circumstances that you’re in..."

MONTREAL GAZETTE: Hellish Alberta climes set scene for Hell on Wheels
By Eric Volmers
November 14, 2011
TV productions see all kinds of temperamental behaviour. But according to the cast of AMC's post-Civil war period drama Hell on Wheels, the most alarming of hissy fits came from Mother Nature herself during a few wet weeks in the spring on the Tsuu T'ina Nation, the beautiful native reserve outside of Calgary.
At the recent Los Angeles premiere of the show, weather was not the only topic of conversation...
... Patrick Gilmore, an expat Edmontonian who was on hand lending support from AMC sister show The Killing, talked about his new movie and desire to be back in Alberta...
... But for many, particularly when prodded by the Hollywood media, the topic of the evening was enduring the weeks of ill-tempered climes in that peculiar outpost of Calgary.
"It brings you back to the time when you are completely vulnerable to that intense weather that all of you guys know about living in Calgary or in that area," said lanky Canadian actor Christopher Heyerdahl, who plays a character known as The Swede.
"When the weather comes through, it comes through, and there's nothing you can do about it. You can see it coming and you just hope the wind will start pushing it north.
"It's this ominous reminder of how small and insignificant we are. We can just be washed away, and that happened to us a number of times. The grips had a hell of a time moving stuff around, knee-deep in mud and snow, and the wind would come up and be knocking things over..."
Christopher Heyerdahl as The Swede
... Heyerdahl decided that The Swede, for instance, is a character who would never purposely have mud on his shoes.
"But it was impossible," Heyerdahl says with a laugh. "He's so OCD, he is in constant terror of getting his boots wet and they were constantly dirty. So it was just a dirty, muddy mess for the first couple of months. You can't get away from that, it brings the reality. You don't have to sit there and do some sort of creative imagining; it's all there -- especially in that valley. It looks like it hasn't been touched. You get on the hill and you can see the suburban sprawl all around you. But there, you are away from it all. It's like going back in time..."

HELL ON WHEELS - COLLIDER: Anson Mount on Hell on Wheels, ‘Praying’ for a Western, and Finally Landing a Manly Role
By Joel Keller
11/18/11
On the new AMC series Hell on Wheels, Anson Mount plays his kind of guy. Not in the sense that he's particularly fond of ex-Confederate soldiers (his character fought on the wrong side of the Civil War and is now on a quest to avenge his wife's death), but in the sense that he's bearded, grungy, slightly immoral, and roaming the Western frontier. We spoke with Mount about why the character appeals to him, what he's learned about Reconstruction from doing the show, and why he was "praying" for a Western...
... Q: What did you find out that you didn’t know before?
Anson Mount: "I definitely did not realize that the transcontinental railroad was the engineering feat of the nineteenth century. Once I read Stephen Ambrose’s Nothing Like It in the World, I realized there really is no arguing that. Everyone said it was impossible. When Lincoln said we were going to do this, everybody laughed; it was like Kennedy saying we’re going to put a man on the moon. Then [Lincoln] died and was martyred and Congress got behind it and federal subsidies kicked in, and you had all these out-of-work soldiers that needed to do something. Slowly people started to realize it could happen, then it captured the nation’s imagination..."

SANCTUARY - SHOW PATROL: Robert Lawrenson: 'Sanctuary' man of action Declan Macrae
By Curt Wagner
June 6, 2011
Robert Lawrenson was supposed to be in just one episode of "Sanctuary," then director/producer Martin Wood learned he could ride a motorcycle.
"Halfway through I think my first day Martin said to me, 'Do you ride a motorbike?'" said Lawrenson, who plays Declan Macrae, the head of the London Sanctuary. "He said, ... We've got an episode coming up; yeah, I'm liking this Declan character.'
"And the rest is history."
It sure is. Lawrenson has become a fan favorite now that Declan has gone from a possible threat to Dr. Helen Magnus (Amanda Tapping) early in Season 2 to a loyal friend and man of action for the Sanctuary team...
Robin Dunne (Will Zimmerman) and Robert Lawrenson (Declan Macrae)
... Show Patrol: We were talking about Declan's military background. Tell me about the Def Con 5 talent agency.
Robert Lawrenson: "Def Con 5, these boys that Martin Wood gets in to [work on fight scenes]. ... I think some of them are ex-military blokes themselves. They all have very specific training about handling guns and about how to walk into a difficult situation, because when you've got four guys running into a situation you've got to be aware of not shooting each other. If I swing my gun I can't swing it past you, because I could let it off on you. So you have to bring your gun down and up and around and there are all these things you've got to think about that I had absolutely no idea of.
When I came I had never really done any kind of gun work. I did a little bit of work onstage with a gun in theater, but I've never been in anything like this that we were going to be running into these situations military-style. I'd watched "24" and seen them running in and just thought that was great"

TERRA NOVA - DIGITAL SPY: Shelley Conn interview: 'I'm hoping for season two'
By Morgan Jeffery
Saturday, Nov 19 2011
Terra Nova has been wowing viewers on both sides of the Atlantic with its breathtaking visuals and exciting action scenes, but there's a family dynamic at the show's heart - the Shannon clan, led by father Jim (Jason O'Mara) and mother Elisabeth (Shelley Conn), take center stage.
Digital Spy caught up with Shelley Conn to discuss her role as the Shannon matriarch - in our interview, the charming actress hints at the twists and turns to come on Terra Nova and reveals that she almost played a different character entirely! Read on to find out more...
... Q: You're an English actress using her own accent in a US show. Was there ever talk of you performing with an American twang?
Shelley Conn: "Yeah. When I auditioned, I did both English and American. I was auditioning for Mira [eventually played by Christine Adams] as well - I had to find what my place in the show as going to be, but I was determined to be in it in some way! For me, I always felt that Mira was English and Elisabeth was American, so when they cast me as Elisabeth, I said, 'Oh please let me do it in American!'
"But after some discussion, they said we needed to stick with the English accent. I think the director [of the pilot] Alex Graves just loved the sound of it, which was baffling to me, but flattering at the same time! But now I feel that it's absolutely right. To start with, even in takes, I would start sentences off and kept playing it in American! I'd have to stop myself and start again! But now, I definitely feel that she's English..."

ONCE UPON A TIME - HITFIX: Raphael Sbarge talks about playing Jiminy Cricket on 'Once Upon A Time'
Being a bug isn't as easy or simple as it seems
By Liane Bonin Starr
Saturday, Nov 19, 2011
As an actor, Raphael Sbarge has had plenty of intriguing roles (starting with one on "Sesame Street" when he was four and followed by appearances in everything from "Pearl Harbor" to "Nip/Tuck"). But few could compare to his most recent -- he's the human version of Jiminy Cricket (yes, the little bug in "Pinocchio") on "Once Upon A Time." I talked to Sbarge about what it's like to play a cricket (well, sort of), his big episode this Sunday (November 27), and why he's glad this role isn't "clean and sparkly..."
Because "Once" is divided into two arenas -- the "real" Storybrooke and a fairytale world -- Sbarge says that we will see some "cricket talk" on Sunday but that "the majority of what you'll see is me playing me. You saw the cricket in the pilot, but he's obviously Archie in the real world. It's not all CGI characters. On Sunday's episode, you'll see that they've created the whole backstory of how Jiminy came to be. They'll also have two younger actors playing me as a young man, so you see the evolution..."
