THE MORTON REPORT: Interview with Arctic Air's Pascale Hutton

By Steve Eramo
January 19, 2013

... Currently, the beautiful and talented Pascale Hutton can be seen playing Krista Ivarson in her second season of the TV drama Arctic Air (airing Wednesdays at 9:00 p.m. EST/PST on CBC in Canada). Set in the rural town of Yellowknife in the Canadian north, Krista is among the team of workers trying to keep the struggling Arctic Air airlines afloat, not only as a viable business but also as a lifeline for and to the local community. This particular role came along at just the right time in Hutton’s personal as well as professional life...

... “At the time I had just had a brand new baby and wasn’t really looking at any projects quite yet,” says the actress. “However, my agent showed me the pilot script for Arctic Air and said, ‘I really think you should take a look at this.’ I read it and thought it was great. I was really excited about the script and felt it had tons of potential and longevity in terms of a TV series.

“So I auditioned, which went really well, and the producers were very keen on me coming back and doing a chemistry read with Adam Beach [who plays series leading man, Bobby Martin]. Adam and I read together and clicked right away..."

... Along with Arctic Air, Hutton’s other TV credits include Smallville, Flashpoint, Supernatural, Stargate: Atlantis and Fringe. On the big screen, she has appeared in such films as A Simple Curve, Fantastic Four, Ginger Snaps: The Sequel and Afghan Luke. The actress won a Gemini Award for her recurring role of Julianna Vejzna in the Canadian-made drama series Intelligence...

... Prior to Arctic Air, Hutton played the recurring role of behavioral scientist and Special FBI Agent Abby Corrigan in the sci-fi/fantasy series Sanctuary. Her character became romantically involved with forensic psychiatrist Dr. Will Zimmerman (Robin Dunne), and through him was introduced to the world of legendary creatures called Abnormals.

“Talk about the opposite end of the spectrum,” says Hutton. “Sanctuary was a very special effects-heavy show, so there was a learning curve in terms of technical acting. Seventy-five percent of the show was shot in front of a green screen, and as an actor your imagination has to create almost everything. It’s pretty wild to jump into that sort of world, but a great acting challenge. I loved that the quirks of the characters and the quirks of the relationships between characters were never sacrificed at the expense of the special effects..."

TV GUIDE: New Season Reviews: Nashville, Arrow, Chicago Fire

Oct 10, 2012
by Matt Roush

Though the TV season is already a few weeks old, tonight counts as one of the biggest rollouts of fall, with three high-profile premieres on three networks, including my favorite pilot of an admittedly anemic batch...

... The CW also knows its audience pretty well, enough so as to have made one of its top priorities a search through the DC Comics vaults for a new superhero franchise to fill the Smallville void. In Arrow (8/7c), the network's aim is true, adapting the Green Arrow comics into a deluxe action melodrama with a rich Gothic-romantic mythology, about a hunky crusader (abs-tastic Stephen Amell) who's part Hamlet, part Robinson Crusoe, and in case the success of the Dark Knight franchise escaped anyone, part Batman.

Familiarity points deducted, Arrow is still a very slick piece of work, as we're introduced to Oliver Queen (Amell), first seen as a scraggly survivor of five years shipwrecked on a Mandarin island whose name means "purgatory," where "I had to forge myself into a weapon" to survive. (Flashbacks from this period are expected to be a regular Arrow feature.) Before becoming an unnaturally buff human weapon and first-rate archer, Queen was a prince of mythical Starling City, a more debauched version of a Bruce Wayne-like billionaire brat-about-town. His conscience awakened during his time away, with family tragedy and intrigue further coloring his view, he now vows "to bring justice to those who have poisoned my city." By any means necessary, usually violently, mostly by wielding a super-charged bow-and-arrow while disguised in a simple green hood.

Oliver Queen's origin story may not be terribly original, but Arrow aims high in its production values and its casting, including the regal Susanna Thompson (Once and Again) as his enigmatic mother, Broadway headliner Colin Donnell as his spoiled pal Tommy and CW regular Katie Cassidy (one of my favorite Supernatural lasses ever) as his lost love Dinah "Laurel" Lance, whose unfriendly welcome back — "I'd hoped that you would rot in hell a whole lot longer than five years" — may have something to do with her sister having perished when Oliver's boat went down (she was in his bed at the time). Angst, action and hard-bodied heroics — if that's not a CW formula for success, what is? (Pairing it midweek with Supernatural also feels right.)

I wouldn't say Arrow blew me away — it's a bit too derivative — and I'd never pretend to be an expert in the comic-book world this character inhabits. But it's hooked me for now, and seeing that they're front-loading this first arc of episodes with characters like Kelly Hu as China White and guest stars including Torchwood's John Barrowman, how can I resist?

TV GUIDE: On the Range With A&E's Hot Summer Hit Longmire

Jul 20, 2012
by Ileane Rudolph

... It's been a long time since TV was populated by righteous dudes of few words in cowboy hats. Timothy Olyphant's lawmen on Deadwood and Justified have a vengeful streak, and on Hatfields & McCoys you couldn't hit a hero with a Winchester if you tried. That's the hole Longmire executive producers Hunt Baldwin, John Coveny and Greer Shephard wanted to fill.

"After a long period of TV's most interesting characters being antiheroes, it seemed fresh to dig into an old-fashioned American hero," says Baldwin.

"One of the problems I've got with a lot of protagonists these days is that you can't really tell the good guys from the bad guys," adds Craig Johnson, whose popular Walt Longmire novels are the basis of the series. "People won't have that problem with Walt. He is a hero." Which means you can count on the Absaroka County, Wyoming, sheriff to always do the right thing. Isn't that refreshing?"

"We knew we were on to something really good," says Lou Diamond Phillips, who plays Walt's old friend Henry Standing Bear, a Cheyenne barkeep looking out for his tribe's interests. "The wild card was if the viewing public was ready for a contemporary Western."

It seems they were: 4.1 million viewers tuned in to Longmire's June 3 debut, making it the network's most watched scripted show ever. It's already been picked up for Season 2...
