Now, we know that all you British people saw this long ago, so you’re resolutely unimpressed by the fact that we’re getting it over a year later. To that, we will say that Ben Whishaw and Tom Hiddleston are great, no matter when they are enjoyed by us...

The Hollow Crown is PBS’s latest attempt to mount a version of some of William Shakespeare’s “history plays” – specifically, the four-play cycle of Richard II (premiering tonight), followed by Henry IV: Parts 1 & 2 and Henry V. The last time public television presented all of these was in the late Seventies, when PBS and the BBC spent seven years televising all of Shakespeare’s plays. That cycle’s Richard II, made in 1978, starred Derek Jacobi in the title role. This new version, overseen by director Sam Mendes, stars Ben Whishaw of The Hours, in a version that also features David Morrissey of The Walking Dead, James Purefoy of The Following, and Patrick Stewart. The acting is impressive, the effort commendable – and the scenery, especially of the outdoor scenes, serms appropriately Shakespearean. Continues on subsequent Fridays...

... THE FRIDAY GUIDE: The play's the thing, even if the timing (in the teeth of the new fall season) leaves much to be desired. For the next four Fridays, PBS's Great Performances lives up to its billing with a spectacular and dazzlingly acted mega-miniseries titled The Hollow Crown (check tvguide.com listings), comprising four of Shakespeare's history plays that form a progression from this week's Richard II (starring Ben Whishaw as the foppish, doomed monarch) through the two parts of Henry IV and culminating with the epic Henry V on Oct. 11, with Tom Hiddleston maturing from the callow Prince Hal to the warrior king in the final three movies. Sounds dry? It's anything but, enlivening the classic texts with rich cinematic production values and starry casting, including in the first play alone Patrick Stewart, David Morrissey, David Suchet, The Following's James Purefoy and rising star Rory Kinnear as the banished Bolingbroke — who will become Henry IV (played in later years and installments by Jeremy Irons)...

Foyle's (Michael Kitchen) new boss Sir Alec Meyerson (Rupert Vansittart) asks him to investigate the deaths of three Russian defectors,who were all in supposedly safe houses. Then another dying Russian collapses in a hospital, his last words apparently being 'Ten Eye' and Doctor Ross (Rufus Wright), who tried to save him, is murdered after asking Foyle to meet him. In looking into the doctor's death Foyle discovers the significance of 'Ten Eye' at a secretive military establishment which eaves-drops on Russian transmissions and decodes them for the West. At the same time the disappearance of one of Adam's (Daniel Weyman) constituents seems to be linked with the defection of a woman with the same name, who was the safe houses' liaison officer. As Foyle discovers who really betrayed the Russians and killed the doctor for knowing too much Sam (Honeysuckle Weeks) helps Adam to political success.

Foyle's War cast includes Michael Kitchen, Honeysuckle Weeks and Daniel Weyman.

Guest stars include Laura Way, Simon Coury, Radoslaw Kaim, Rufus Wright, Rupert Vansittart, Alexandra Clatworthy, Ellie Haddington, Tim McMullan, Ross Armstrong, Jeremy Swift, Thomas Padden, Tom Beard and Jonathan Hyde.

One war makes way for another as the incredibly durable Foyle's War, in its seventh Masterpiece Mystery! season on PBS, transitions from post-World War II intrigues to the ethically murky spy games of a burgeoning Cold War. "I haven't got the requisite capacity for deceit," grumbles former police DCS Christopher Foyle (Michael Kitchen, radiating crisp intelligence and decency), who once again is denied his dreams of retirement when MI5 spooks reel him in, fresh off the boat from America.

We're now in the post-atomic era of 1946, with the Soviets the new menace and London still struggling with food shortages — "Sometimes I wonder whether we actually did win the war," declares Foyle's former driver, Sam (the delightful Honeysuckle Weeks), whose husband Adam (recast, now played by Daniel Weyman) is considering a run for Parliament on the Labour ticket. In The Eternity Ring, the first of three new Foyle mystery movies (Sunday at 9/8c, check tvguide.com listings), Foyle is drawn into the investigation of a rumored Soviet spy ring, with Sam caught in the web of suspicion because of her association with her current employer, a physicist who witnessed the A-bomb testing a year earlier in New Mexico. Who are the real traitors in a world on the cusp of potential nuclear annihilation? Can Foyle trust anyone, even his enigmatic and manipulative new bosses?

The world may have changed, but Foyle has lost none of his brusque appeal, even though he appears sulkier than usual to be drawn back into the shadows to protect pawns in an increasingly deadly conflict. It's great to have him back. (Because Sundays are ridiculously busy, if you miss Foyle on Sunday, episodes will be available online the next day at pbs.org and www.Acorn.TV, which also offers past seasons of this smart and absorbing series.)

The second episode of this six-part series offering a bird's-eye view of the world takes
viewers to Africa to fly among sharks, dolphins and whales with cape gannets and soar with fish eagles, kelp gulls, vultures and flamingos. The flamingo footage was particularly tricky to get and required burying remote cameras at their watering holes, disguising another camera as a small flock of them, and infiltrating the flock in flight with a radio-controlled drone.

Cape gannets fly off the coast of South Africa in search of the great sardine run, the biggest fish migration in the world. The birds dive into the ocean to feast as dolphins, also on the hunt, push the sardines toward the water's surface. It doesn't take long before bronze whaler sharks and bride whales join them.
