TV GUIDE: Top Moments: Castle's Emotional Deep Freeze

Mar 3, 2011
by Joyce Eng and Kate Stanhope

Our top moments of the week:

... Worst Timing: Trapped in a freezer storage unit on Castle and seemingly near death, Beckett decides it's time to tell the writer how she really feels about him in a moment far more intimate than their faux kiss: "I just want you to know how much I l—," she says, before passing out. So close, but yet so far — especially since Josh pops back in the picture to save the day. Sigh.

CELEBRITY EXTRA: Interview: Tamala Jones Keeps the Castle Boys in Line

by Cindy Elavsky
Wednesday, March 2, 2011

Tamala Jones is best known to TV audiences as medical examiner Dr. Lanie Parish on ABC's "Castle." So, what's it like to be a part of a show that not only has one of the most talented and fun casts on television, but is also a huge hit with every category of television viewer? I spoke with Tamala recently and asked her just that...

Photobucket

... CE: Another aspect of your character that I really like is she’s a medical examiner, but she’s a young vibrant woman, not like a stuffy middle-aged person that other shows often get as their medical examiner. She’s a smart cookie, but she’s young and sexy. What do you like about playing Lanie?

TJ: I love all of what you just said. I love that Lanie is young and vibrant and is smart, but she gives you the sass when she can. But for the most part, to bring down what exactly has gone on with the deceased that’s laying on her slab, she’s down to business. There’s no holding back in what she’s seeing, what she saw and identified on the outside.

And I love the fact that she’s young, because now there are young doctors out there. There are young medical examiners out there. I had food poisoning after New Years, and I had to go to the hospital, and you know, I’m very flirty. And the doctor came in, and he was young and he was cute, and I’m sitting there looking like I’m about to die. I say, “Oh, I thought you were going to be old and crusty, but you’re sexy.” And he said: “Well, thank you. And how are you feeling?” And it’s true. There are younger doctors out there. I look at Lanie as the female Doogie Howser...

Being Human

BEING HUMAN - SCIFI AND TV TALK: Being Human's Mark Pellegrino - Paternal Instinct

Vampires in feature films and TV have certainly changed since the days of hanging out in drafty old European castles, avoiding sunlight and mesmerizing beautiful young women before putting the bite on them. In fact, nowadays some small screen bloodsuckers even fight crime and the forces of evil, or at least look like they are. On Syfy’s popular supernatural series Being Human, James Bishop is a Boston police officer. He is also a centuries’-old vampire and besides trying to protect his own kind, Bishop is also working to bring an old friend and fellow vamp, Aidan McCollin, back under his wing. It is a tricky balancing act, and actor Mark Pellegrino, who plays Bishop, enjoys portraying the challenges of leading such a double life.

“We find out during the course of the show that vampire families arrange themselves in kind of a hierarchy, very similar to the mob or the Mafia where families organize and cover entire regions,” explains Pellegrino, "‘and Bishop happens to be the vampire boss of Boston. He has ingratiated himself into ‘normal’ parts of society – Bishop is a lieutenant in the police force – and uses his position as a means of recruiting new vampires as well as covering their tracks.

“I think the biggest challenge with this particular role is to take your antagonist and make him sympathetic. I’ve tried to do that by finding the human problem in the script and then attacking it from that point of view. Bishop’s problem to me is akin to the prodigal son story, where a son has abandoned the family in order to pursue values that are dangerous to him and even harmful to the family. As the ‘father,’ Bishop is trying to bring him back into the fold and the right way of doing things. So that’s how I look at it; I’m trying to bring a sense of empathy and sympathy to the character...”

Merlin 2

MERLIN - SCIFI AND TV TALK: Merlin's Warwick Davis

On the March 4th episode Merlin (The Eye of the Phoenix), Warwick Davis guest-starred as the mysterious Grettir. The actor is best known for roles in several blockbuster movies; he plays Professor Filius Flitwick in the Harry Potter feature films and the Ewok "Wicket" in Star Wars: The Return of the Jedi as well as the title character in Willow and the Leprechaun franchise. As Grettir in Merlin, Davis plays one part guardian of a mystical path, and one part soothsayer in seeing the future of the trio from Camelot – Prince Arthur (Bradley James), Merlin (Colin Morgan) and Gwaine (Eoin Macken).

Davis, a self-professed fan of the series, took time during his filming of Merlin to chat about his role in the episode …and offer a few other tidbits of news. Here’s what he had to say (courtesy of the BBC) ...

... How did this guest starring role on Merlin come about?

Warwick Davis - Well it was lovely. I guess the longer you're acting and the longer you are around, the more often you are offered a part rather than having to audition. It is really nice when the director offers you the role because you don't have the worry of auditioning and thinking, “I want the part – will I get the part?” At the same time, you walk on the set on the first day and in the back of your mind you're wondering, “I hope I can fulfill the director's vision of this character, because no one really knows what I am going to do.” Whereas if you've auditioned already you know what the director likes.

It's very flattering though and I was absolutely thrilled because we love to watch Merlin in this household. For me, it harks back to being a youngster watching dramas such as The Chronicles Of Narnia, which I had the honor of being in, too.
