EUREKA - BUDDY TV: Producer Amy Berg Talks About TV, Obsessions and Comic-Con
Tuesday, July 12, 2011
by Laurel Brown
Comic-Con is coming! And BuddyTV will be there.
This year we are sponsoring a panel at the San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday, July 21. The panel, "Obsession: How TV and Movies Go from Fascination to Phenomenon," will feature a host of television writers, actors and more. One of our esteemed panelists is Amy Berg, the co-executive producer of Eureka and a former supervising producer of Leverage.
We asked Berg about her television work, her experiences at Comic-Con and some of her own obsessions...
... Q: What do you think is necessary to create fan obsession for television shows?
Amy Berg: "You need characters who resonate with viewers, whether it's because they relate to them personally or are merely charmed by them. And you need to build interesting relationships between them. A lot of viewers root for a romance between two leads... like with Mulder and Scully or Crichton and Aeryn or Lee and Starbuck. And as writers we embrace that, we tease it. The question of "will they or won't they" has kept lots of shows on the air, perhaps even after they've otherwise expired.
But for me, romances are rarely the most interesting relationships on a show. What hooked me on a show like Battlestar Galactica wasn't the potential love matches or even the space battles -- it was the father-daughter relationship between Starbuck and Adama. I remember watching the final scene in "Home" between the two of them and saying to myself, "Yep, I'm in."
Don't get me wrong, relationships aren't the only things that hook viewers. There will always be fans who are sold on concepts alone. Some will watch anything that's set on a spaceship. I'm a strong believer in simple concepts, complex characters. And I think that's why you've seen shows like Eureka succeed where other more conceptually involved shows like Caprica have failed..."
Eureka season 4.5 airs Mondays at 8/7C on Syfy.

ALPHAS - SCIFI AND TV TALK: Malik Yoba - Muscling In
By Steven Eramo
07/12/2011
As New York Police Detective Julius Clarence “J.C” Williams he helped clean up the streets of the Big Apple in the popular 90s TV police drama New York Undercover, while his character of Ted Shaw on the short-lived 2009 Sci-Fi drama Defying Gravity commanded a six-year journey to explore Earth’s solar system onboard the Antares, a spacecraft with a secret of its own that impacted the lives as well as mission of its international crew.
These are just two of the many roles that the handsome, versatile and gifted Malik Yoba has helped flesh out and bring to life in his two decades working as an actor. Currently he is in Toronto and once again fighting the bad guys, this time as Bill Harken in the new Syfy series Alphas. His character is part of a team that uses their greatly enhanced physical and mental skills to solve crimes of an extraordinary nature. Given his impressive physical stature as well as ease with handling action, drama and the occasional humorous turns required with Bill Harken, Yoba is the ideal fit for the part. So it may surprise some to know that he almost passed on it...
... “Funnily enough, it was actually because of how Defying Gravity was treated and the fact that it just sort of went away after all the hard work we put into doing those 13 episodes, that, in 2010, I wasn’t really interested in doing any other series work for while,” recalls Yoba during a break in filming on the Alphas’ set. “I was happy to just carry on with feature [film] work as well as continue development on my own music and digital projects.
“One day my agent called to tell me about this great pilot, but I told him I wasn’t really interested. Then, however, I found out that Jack Bender [executive producer/lead director on Lost], who directed the Alphas pilot, was coming to New York, and I agreed to meet with him. I went online to find out more about Jack and I discovered that he started out as an actor and three years later moved over into producing and directing. He also has two daughters, and I just felt like his career trajectory was close enough to mine and that he would be someone who could sympathize with my hesitation about not wanting to leave my kids in order to go to another country and work on a TV show that may or may not go..."

HAVEN - ALL TV: 'Haven' star seeing double
by Tere
Tuesday, July 12, 2011
Emily Rose was pointing a gun at a mirror as the first season of Haven ended.
Well, not literally. But Rose's character, Audrey Parker, was staring at a new character who had just shown up, claiming to be Audrey Parker.
"We call her Fraudrey," Rose said with a laugh. "But we don't know if she's really Fraudrey."
Truth is a relative thing in Haven, the attractively creepy Canadian-American co-production that returns for its second season Monday, July 18 on Showcase. Haven also airs on Syfy in the United States [premiering Friday, July 15 at 10/9C].
Certainly, given that the first episode of the second season is titled A Tale of Two Audreys, the double-identity angle is explored right away.
"Even though it's a brief arc, it's a really neat journey they go down together," Rose said of the dual Audreys, the second of whom is played by Kathleen Munroe...

TORCHWOOD: MIRACLE DAY - DEN OF GEEK: John Barrowman Interview
by Simon Brew
Jul 12, 2011
We met up with John Barrowman twice in the build up to the UK premiere of Torchwood: Miracle Day, which the BBC starts screening this Thursday. Firstly, we caught up with him earlier in the year when the shoot came to Wales. And then, we met him again at the UK press launch, just a couple of weeks ago.
After setting the scene for the show itself, we got down to business...
... Q: Russell T Davies has been saying that this is such a fast shoot, so for you, this must be trickier. What's your typical day on Torchwood?
John Barrowman: "It depends if you're filming. I probably have to get up at five in the morning, and we drive ourselves to work. Unlike the UK, when we get cars, we have to drive ourselves, and I love that. We pull into the lot, do hair and make-up, we usually film twelve hour days, but in the US, they film until they're finished. So, we might do sixteen hours.
When you go back home, you realise that your call has been pushed a little bit, so you're in at six or seven o'clock in the morning, and it's like that Monday to Friday. And to be honest, I've always had a packed schedule of things that I do.
But although it's fast-paced, it's not any faster than all the stuff I've done in the UK. So, it's not a big flip-change for me. I've also filmed two other series in America, Titans and Central Park West, so there's a work ethic in the schedule. And we're there to work anyway. We're not there to play.
It's a long schedule, but it's definitely bigger, and I think the audience will be pleased with it..."
