VISUAL EFFECTS SOCIETY (VES) ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF 10th ANNUAL VES AWARDS

Rango, recognized with awards in four categories, is the night’s most honored project Surprise appearance by Martin Scorsese is one of evening’s highlights

Los Angeles, February 7, 2012 - The Visual Effects Society (VES) announced the winners of its 10th Annual VES Awards tonight at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. The annual event recognizes outstanding visual effects artistry in 23 categories of film, animation, television, commercials, special venues and video games.

More than a thousand attendees -- filmmakers, producers, directors and members of the visual effects community-- gathered to recognize the year’s best work and the artists who created it. Rango was the evening’s most honored project with four awards, including Outstanding Visual Effects in an Animated Feature Motion Picture, Outstanding Animated Character in an Animated Feature Motion Picture, Outstanding Created Environment in an Animated Feature Motion Picture, and Outstanding Virtual Cinematography in an Animated Feature Motion Picture. Hugo, Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Transformers: Dark of the Moon all took home two awards in the Feature Motion Picture categories, while Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones each garnered a pair of awards in the Television categories.

Stan Lee received the Lifetime Achievement Award and visual effects pioneer Douglas Trumbull received the Georges Méliès Award at the show, which was hosted by Patton Oswalt, Antonio Banderas, Lou Ferrigno, directors Chris Miller, Marc Webb and Jennifer Yuh Nelson, and a host of luminaries were on hand to present awards. A surprise appearance by Martin Scorsese, whose film Hugo received two awards, was one of the evening’s highlights.

A stage, film and television actor, Stephen Lang is known for his commanding roles. One of the stars of "Avatar," the 59-year-old New Yorker currently can be seen in the Fox series "Terra Nova."

Lang's love of traveling began early. "The first trip I recall was driving with my family to Washington, D.C., Mount Vernon and Williamsburg," Lang said. "I liked all of it, but my favorite part was staying in motels. I loved motels when I was a kid, particularly the swimming pools and ice machines. My kids were the same way. I imagine most kids are..."



... Q: What is your favorite vacation destination?

Stephen Lang: "It's very difficult to pick a favorite destination. Rome and Paris come to mind. The American Southwest, Amsterdam, the Caribbean, New Zealand, China. … I love all those places. But I will pick Ireland. I am very fond of the people, landscape, poetry, music, history and the Guinness. Being there makes me think of my mother and my grandmother — always sentimental and warm thoughts..."

Versatile actor Stephen Lang began his formidable career in theatre, but is well known for his portrayal of Colonel Miles Quaritch in the 2009 epic science fiction film Avatar, written and directed by James Cameron. The film became the first film to gross more than $2 billion and stands as the highest-grossing movie of all time.

The busy actor’s most recent role is Commander Nathaniel Taylor in the FOX science fiction drama Terra Nova. The two-hour season finale air[ed] Monday, December 19, 2011. FOX has deferred a decision on whether or not the series returns for a second season until at least January 2012...




... Melissa Parker (Smashing Interviews Magazine): Stephen, I enjoy your performances in military roles as well. Do you feel a heavy responsibility while playing such crucial characters in American History?

Stephen Lang: "You bet! I always feel there is a special responsibility that you have. Of course, in anything you do, whether its Shakespeare or Chekhov, you have a responsibility to the integrity of the character. But, when you’re playing Stonewall Jackson, George Pickett, or Babe Ruth, you have a responsibility to the integrity of history as well. You really need to be mindful of that and to represent in a very accurate way. So, yeah, I do feel it.

It’s a pleasure to do that kind of research and to try to lift these guys from the pages of history and try to make them live and breathe. It’s a way of preserving our own heritage. I really like doing the characters. I’m a history fan anyway. I love history..."

'Twas the week before Christmas, and I can't remember when so much was stirring on TV this late into the year. Here are some highlights from an unusually busy pre-Christmas week...


... DINO-MIGHT? The biggest cliffhanger regarding the two-hour finale of Fox's time-tripping family sci-fi drama Terra Nova (8/7c) isn't so much what happens on the show, which is fairly standard action-adventure mayhem, but whether it will return for a second season next year. (That decision should be made fairly early in 2012.) If you can accept the fact that this lavishly produced exercise in escapist corn has more of the feel of an old-fashioned comic book than a newfangled graphic novel, it's not that hard to enjoy the melodrama. The finale gets off to a strong start when an invading mercenary army from 2149, acting on orders of the greedily rapacious Phoenix Group, explosively interrupts the arrival of the 11th Pilgrimage. Sheriff Jim Shannon (Jason O'Mara) is violently sidelined in the skirmish, and wakes days later to a disorienting tableau of military occupation. With Commander Taylor (Stephen Lang) MIA in the wilderness, Jim plays resistance leader from the inside, but eventually the entire Shannon family has to go into hiding, resembling the Von Trapps at the end of The Sound of Music. And at times, it's just as schmaltzy. It's not much of a spoiler alert to report that the Shannon kids, who make Cindy Lou Who look edgy, are never in any real danger. Except perhaps of a saccharine OD.

The villains, meanwhile, are cartoonishly garish, starting with Taylor's psychotically vengeful physicist son Lucas (Ashley Zuckerman). When Lucas boasts to a tool named Weaver, the most odious of the Phoenix leaders, that they could strip half of this unspoiled continent of its natural resources in six months, Weaver actually cackles, "That's what I like to hear. ... Be one hell of a barbecue down here." Oh, Weaver, you're asking for it. In the course of the action, the source of Lucas' patricidal enmity is revealed, and Jim executes a drastic plan to stop Phoenix that will change the colony's and the series' future, if there is one. And should Fox decide Terra Nova is too costly an enterprise with too little return to keep going, there's just enough closure in this finale to keep the fans from going too T-Rex...
