Amanda Tapping has tackled numerous roles over the course of her storied career, but it’s her long-running turns as Samantha ‘Sam’ Carter on Stargate SG-1 (and its spin-offs) and Dr. Helen Magnus on Sanctuary that cemented her status as the Queen of Sci-fi TV...

... But don’t expect Tapping to pick a favourite between the two characters that made her an icon.

“I think Helen is more me now, and Sam was me then. I felt very connected to Sam Carter at that stage of my life, and as I came into my own as a woman, she came into her own, and I feel like we grew up together, and now that I sort of have a different perspective, I love Helen,” says Tapping. “I don’t know that I could go back and play Sam Carter. She’d be a very different Sam Carter. She’d have a bit more of an edge, I think, whereas I was ready to play Helen...”


Amanda Tapping is currently working on the Stargate SG-1 video game, Unleashed; has a recurring role as the Angel Naomi in Supernatural's eighth season; and has been directing episodes of Primeval: New World (premieres in Syfy on 2013, currently airing in Canada on Space Channel on Tuesdays at 10PM); and Canadian series Arctic Air (airs Wednesday at 9PM on CBS); and has co-starred in independent films Space Milkshake and Random Acts of Romance, release dates pending at this time.

THE PROVINCE: VIFF players chase their passions between TV gigs

Go to a party at CinCin, the second floor restaurant on Robson, and everyone tells you to try the risotto.

I got into various conversations, and missed every tray of appetizer-sized risotto plates that swished by. Oh well, they tell me it’s to die for.

The occasion was Friday night’s party marking the Canadian Images program at the Vancouver International Film Festival. These days, most of those images seem to be on TV, at least around Vancouver’s production scene. Some 15 TV series, both American and Canadian, are filming or are about to start filming in or near the city...

Supernatural premieres on a NEW night, Wednesday, October 3, 2012 at 9/8C on CW.





... [Sonja] Bennett is also among the ensemble playing dysfunctional couples in director Katrin Bowen’s Random Acts of Romance. Bennett clinked glasses with Bowen and fellow Random actor Amanda Tapping at the party.

Tapping, meanwhile, has joined the eighth season of the B.C. filmed CW series Supernatural as a recurring character. The new season starts airing this month, and Tapping filmed her first scenes last week. Internet wags say she plays an angel in the show’s continuing battle between heaven, hell and earth, but Tapping isn’t talking. “All I can tell you is that they said ‘action’ and ‘cut’.”



... Actor-director Ben Ratner is another who frequently keeps busy on the small screen, but this night was taking a break from the editing suite, where he’s putting the finishing touches on Down River, an indie ensemble drama set in Vancouver’s music and arts scene. He wrote and directed that movie, which stars Helen Shaver as the dying mentor to a group of younger artists played by Gabrielle Miller, Colleen Rennison and Ratner’s wife Jennifer Spence. Expect that movie on next year’s festival circuit – after visiting the set this past summer, I’m stoked.

Spence, meanwhile, is looking forward to a second season as a regular on the Showcase sci-fi series Continuum, in which she plays a Vancouver cop. The show starts airing this month in the U.K., after scoring strong numbers in Canada earlier this year. The second season starts filming in January...

It’s a good thing Amanda Tapping can act. She was shooting the film Random Acts of Romance this year when Sanctuary, the series she helped create and on which she starred (as Dr. Helen Magnus), died a fairly abrupt death.

“We fought, we fought, right up until the last minute and then had, like, 24 hours to get our stuff out of the studio,” Ms. Tapping said this week. “I remember one lunch hour, walking down that little alleyway and calling my husband in tears and saying, ‘Thank God I’m on this movie.’

“Honest to God, it saved me emotionally...”

Random Acts of Romance, which has its world premiere at the Vancouver International Film Festival on Oct. 5, was meant to be Ms. [Katrin] Bowen’s feature debut, but funding fell apart at the last minute. With a crew all hired and ready to go, she wrote a new script in two weeks. Amazon Falls – shot in only two weeks with a paltry budget of $50,000 – premiered in 2010 at the Toronto International Film Festival and the Vancouver International Film Festival...

Amazon falls director returns to VIFF

The dinner conversation in an opening scene of Random Acts of Romance is so awkward it's easy to assume Holly (Laura Bertram) and David (Robert Moloney) are on a first date.

But viewers soon learn they're newlyweds.

It's one of the many twists and turns in the anti-romantic comedy that premieres at the Vancouver International Film Festival.

Random Acts of Romance revolves around two couples with faltering relationships and the pot dealer, wacked-out receptionist and playboy who get tangled in their lives...


... Random Acts of Romance pairs Amanda Tapping (Sanctuary and Stargate SG-1) with film and TV actor Zak Santiago, and Robert Moloney (currently in the Arts Club's Clybourne Park) with Laura Bertram. Katharine Isabelle plays Bud, Sonja Bennett plays the receptionist and Ted Whittall plays the womanizer.

The film's score includes songs by local bands Mother Mother and Sex with Strangers and dinner dates are shot at the Waldorf Hotel.

... VIFF runs Sept. 27 to Oct. 12 with nearly 400 short and feature-length films from 75 countries and 107 Canadian films and co-productions. For more information, see viff.org.

SCIFI AND TV TALK: Catching Up With Amanda Tapping

Known by her many fans as the Queen of Sci-Fi, actress Amanda Tapping spent 15 years of her career portraying two unforgettable and iconic female TV characters – Colonel Samantha Carter in Stargate SG-1 (as well as Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe) and Dr. Helen Magnus in Sanctuary. This year, however, some of her work has been much more down-to-Earth, but equally as challenging and fulfilling. One of these roles was in the recently aired Lifetime network made-for-TV movie Taken Back: Finding Haley, in which her character of Susan has a secret to hide when it comes to her teenage daughter.

“Susan had a little girl who died at the age of three, after which she lost her mind and abducted another little girl to raise her as her own,” says Tapping. “So it’s the story of two mothers – Moira Kelly plays the mother of the abducted child who never stops looking for her, while my character is now raising that missing child and has never stopped protecting her. Not surprisingly, Susan is always living in fear that her daughter will find out the truth.

“So she’s ‘crazy,’ and I got to do this The Shining-type of moment where I’m banging down the bathroom door,” notes the actress with a smile. “It was fantastic because this was a type of character I had never played before. She’s out of control and so tightly wound that she doesn’t see the humor in herself. To play someone who’s vibrating at that type of frequency is scary as hell but also fantastic and really fun. Moria Kelly did an amazing job, and Nicole Oliver, who’s an actress I had known from Toronto, is in the movie, too. We’ve been friends for 25 years but had sort of lost touch, and this project brought us back together again, which was wonderful...

RANDOM ACTS OF ROMANCE - THE PROVINCE: Vancouver International Film Festival feeds on '50-kilometre' diet

Midnight's Children, Canadian director Deepa Mehta's movie adaptation of the Salman Rushdie novel, will open this year's Vancouver International Film Festival.

The festival finalized its lineup Wednesday, with Mehta's Canadian-Indian co-production get-ting the gala opening spot Sept. 27. Rushdie wrote the screenplay and supplied the narration for the film, which tells the story of Hindu and Muslim babies switched after their birth in 1947, at midnight of the day India gained independence.

The 16-day festival screens more than 380 features, documentaries and short films from 75 countries, but Wednesday's announcement highlighted the 100-odd Canadian films on the bill...

The B.C.-made films this year include feature films directed by Mark Sawers (the political stalker comedy Camera Shy), co-directors Terry Miles and Kristine Cofsky (the arrested-development tale In No Particular Order), Jesse James Miller (the 1970s coming-of-age fable Becoming Redwood), Katrin Bowen (Amanda Tapping heads the cast of the multi-couple story Random Acts of Romance) and Bruce Sweeney (the thriller The Crimes of Mike Recket)...
