... JESSE STONE: BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT

CBS, 9:00 p.m. ET

This is the eighth movie in Tom Selleck’s series of Jesse Stone mystery movies, based on the books by Spenser: for Hire creator Robert B. Parker – and just the fact that these movies still exist, at a time when telemovies on the broadcast networks appear about as often as Westerns, is enough reason to applaud and support their presence. But there’s more, as well, including a Selleck portrayal that, quite intentionally, makes no concessions to younger viewers or modern trends. This is a character study and plot-driven mystery, pure and simple – and all the better for it. Co-stars include Kathy Baker, Gloria Reuben and William Devane.

... MASTERPIECE MYSTERY!: "SHERLOCK"

PBS, 9:00 p.m. ET

SEASON FINALE: When Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote the Sherlock Holmes story The Final Problem in 1893, it was to do away with the character of his popular detective, whom the author felt was, by that time, a burden. So at the end of the story, Holmes and his evil nemesis, Professor Moriarty, were sent over Reichenbach Falls in a locked, battling embrace to the death. Popular demand forced the resurrection of the character – and since we know the TV Sherlock series is continuing past tonight’s season finale, we know tonight's season ender, The Reichenbach Fall, is not as final an ending as it seems. But my, it’s a gripping one – transplanted to a London rooftop, with Andrew Scott’s Moriarty and Benedict Cumberbatch’s Holmes engaged in another high-altitude duel of wits.

... GAME OF THRONES

HBO, 9:00 p.m. ET

Last week’s episode ended with a gruesome, surprising visual climax: the charred remains of Bran and Rickon, hung from ropes for all to see. But since the bodies are burned beyond recognition, how can we be certain that the victims are indeed the people they have been said to be? Time to call in the forensic experts of CSI: Winterfell.

A Daily Guide To Notable Shows

... Jesse Stone: Benefit of the Doubt

9-11 PM CBS

The eighth of Tom Selleck's Jesse Stone TV movies has the hard-drinking recluse putting on his police-chief baseball cap once again — this time because he's replacing the chief who was murdered in the opening moments. Stone (based on a character created by the late novelist Robert B. Parker) investigates, when he's not too busy with his tough-love therapist (William Devane), his lover (Gloria Reuben), and even his dog. There are those who find the Stone movies slow; we who love them, however, revel in the measured way Selleck and co-writer Michael Brandman play out the suspense, and prize Stone's phlegmatic stubbornness.
