It's a sad day for 'Stargate' fandom. After only two seasons, the third series from the sci-fi franchise, 'Stargate Universe,' is coming to an end.

The cancellation of 'SGU' leaves the TV landscape without a 'Stargate' show for the first time in 14 years. The series finale, titled 'Gauntlet,' airs tonight (Mon., May 9, 9PM ET on Syfy).

'SGU' experienced a creative upswing in its second season, but the show fell victim to low ratings following Syfy's decision to move it from Fridays (AKA, nerd TV night) to Tuesdays last October.

Still, it's hard to pin down exactly what led to the show's cancellation. Perhaps a better timeslot, a more profitable year for cash-strapped studio MGM, or a more patient audience could've saved the moody, ultra-serialized 'SGU' from the chopping block.

But there's still one more hour of spacefaring fun to be had with Eli, Rush and the rest of the Destiny crew before 'SGU' flies off our TV screens forever.

Tonight's series finale ends on what could be described as a cliffhanger, but the episode offers an appropriate sense of finality while also staying true to the show's spirit of exploration (both personal and the "final frontier" kind).

'SGU' co-creator Brad Wright and star David Blue chatted with AOL TV recently about the series finale, the cancellation and about that rumored 'Stargate' TV movie...



... Is this really the end of 'Stargate'?

The show's cancellation and the death of the movie project still stings for both Wright and Blue. For Wright, the end of the show also means the end of a 14-year career as a writer and producer of 'Stargate.'

"I feel proud," Wright said about the 14 years and 17 seasons of 'Stargate' he's leaving behind. "But I'd by lying if I didn't say it's a shame 'SGU' was canceled. It deserved at least a final season, and where we were going with the story was very cool.

"Shepherding the final episodes through the post-production process, sitting in mixes, etc, I kept thinking to myself This show got canceled? But business is business. And as I said to our crewmembers as we said our final goodbyes recently, 'Time to start typing something else.'"

... Blue said that the future held big things for the Destiny crew, especially for Eli, whose personal journey was arguably the heart of the show.

"Would I prefer we were doing more seasons or a few movies? Hell yes!," said Blue.

"But I hope people will continue to watch it. I hope that, a few years down the line, somebody will tell me they just discovered the DVD and they fell in love with the show," he continued.

"I think we told some cool stories. I think we really existed in the 'Stargate' world. And, with the way things end up [in the series finale], I really feel like it's going to continue in the hearts and imaginations of the fans."

TV SQUAD: David Hewlett on 'Stargate Universe' and the Future of the Sci-Fi Franchise

Smart, geeky, passionate and verbose -- not only could that description suit 'Stargate Atlantis''s science wiz Rodney McKay, it also fits the actor who played him, nerd-for-hire David Hewlett.

Two years after viewers waved goodbye to McKay and Hewlett in the 'Atlantis' series finale, the fan-friendly genre actor is resurrecting his most famous role tonight with a guest spot on Syfy's 'Stargate Universe' (Mon., April 4, 10PM ET).

We got a chance to chat with Hewlett about bringing McKay back to 'Stargate,' a franchise that's in danger of disappearing from the TV landscape after the recent cancellation of 'SGU.'

Hewlett, who blogs about his work and life for Syfy's Blastr site, offered his thoughts about the future of 'Stargate' and what it was like playing McKay on 'SGU,' a show he said exists in "a different world when compared to the other 'Stargate's." The actor also briefed us on the status of his in-the-works pet TV project, 'Starcrossed,' which he described as 'Galaxy Quest' meets '30 Rock...'

... TV Squad: In your first blog for Blastr, you wrote that you were "Stargate's biggest fan for life." It must have been pretty easy for you to say yes when the 'SGU' producers asked you to bring back McKay for a guest-starring role.

David Hewlett: "Yeah, that's it. I had so much fun [playing McKay]. I always felt sorry for everyone else on the show ['Stargate Atlantis']. I would say, "Well I got the best character!" I think the writers enjoyed writing McKay, and you could tell. And the issue with 'SGU' is that it was such a different world when compared to the other 'Stargates.' I could bounce back and forth between 'SG-1' and 'SGA,' but 'SGU' was a very different world. I was obviously concerned that, you know, you didn't want McKay to show up and not be McKay unless there was a good reason for that. I think, as ['SGU' co-creator] Brad [Wright] said when I got there, was that he was happy that he could sort of bridge those worlds without really breaking the rules of either of them, which I think was an important thing.

It's so difficult, because McKay wouldn't survive in an 'SGU' world, for the most part. I mean, he'd be killed, basically! And I know Brad said he had a hard time trying to figure out how to bring McKay back, but I'm really glad he did, and it's too bad that the show's not going to continue, but I wasn't gonna be turning that down in a hurry..."

Stargate Universe's Brad Wright - It's A Wonderful Life

It seems like only yesterday, but it was, in fact, way back in 1997 that Brad Wright along with fellow Stargate SG-1 co-creator/executive producer/writer Jonathan Glassner sent the SG-1 team on its first mission through the Stargate. An expedition to the Pegasus Galaxy eventually followed, when Wright and Robert C. Cooper co-created and executive produced Stargate Atlantis.

In 2009, the two joined forces again to bring Stargate Universe to the small screen. Unlike the previous two Stargate incarnations, this series follows a group of military personnel, scientists and civilians who become the unwilling crew of the Ancients starship Destiny. While Colonel Everett Young fights to get everyone home safely, scientist Dr. Nicholas Rush would like nothing more than for them to continue on their outer space odyssey. At the end of the show’s first season, the Lucian Alliance elbowed its way onto Destiny, resulting in gunfire, bloodshed and general mayhem. Luckily for our heroes, Wright and the rest of the show’s writers had the situation under control going into season two.



... This past summer, Robert Cooper decided to step down from his active role as executive producer/writer/director on Universe in order to spend more time with his family as well as pursue other projects. How does Wright feel about no longer having his good friend and longtime creative partner around on a daily basis?

“Rob and I worked together for such a long time, but we’ve also worked separately,” he says. “I make my shows and he makes his, but what I will miss the most is his voice in the writers’ room, because I’ve always been very good at coming up with ideas, and Rob has always been very good at focusing them, like throwing out a thought, and we did it for each other. If either one of us hit a stumbling block at any point, we would just walk across the hall and say, ‘I have this issue, what do you think?’ and within a few minutes, one of us would say, ‘How about this?’ and the other person would say, ‘Thank you,’ and we’d move on...
