The Hollow Crown is PBS’s latest attempt to mount a version of some of William Shakespeare’s “history plays” – specifically, the four-play cycle of Richard II (premiering tonight), followed by Henry IV: Parts 1 & 2 and Henry V. The last time public television presented all of these was in the late Seventies, when PBS and the BBC spent seven years televising all of Shakespeare’s plays. That cycle’s Richard II, made in 1978, starred Derek Jacobi in the title role. This new version, overseen by director Sam Mendes, stars Ben Whishaw of The Hours, in a version that also features David Morrissey of The Walking Dead, James Purefoy of The Following, and Patrick Stewart. The acting is impressive, the effort commendable – and the scenery, especially of the outdoor scenes, serms appropriately Shakespearean. Continues on subsequent Fridays...

SERIES PREMIERE: We plan to have our TVWW Fall Preview page available tomorrow, but Fox already is rolling out the season’s first new prime-time broadcast series. It’s a reworking of the Washington Irving story, bringing Ichabod Crane and his Headless Horseman adversary into the present day, to the confusion of all who encounter either of them. There are some playful moments that make this endurable, and Tom Mison and Nicole Beharie work well together, in a Moonlighting Lite sort of way. But still – Ichabod and company, in this new Fox series, are up against not only the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, but, by being the first new show to premiere this season, the Kickoff Curse, as explained in today’s Bianculli’s Blog.

The latest Syfy movie with a funny title, but no reason to watch, is tonight’s new Robocroc, which endows an artificial crocodile with Terminator-type sensors and sensibilities. I’m not asking you to watch it – just to spend a minute imaging some future possibilities for similar Syfy films along similar lines. A mechanical wild pig named Cyboarg, perhaps? An artificial insect named Antroid? Or perhaps a boxing, hopping-mad Australian machine called Kangaroobot? I eagerly await your own suggestions… All of which will be more fun than tuning in to Robocroc.

SEASON PREMIERE: Season 4 of this Stephen King-inspired series jumps forward six months in time, enough time to have cleaned up after the mysterious meteor shower than rained down upon the small town of Haven in last season’s finale – and somehow made off with Audrey (Emily Rose). Apparently, she’s been missing ever since, but a mercurial new character, played by Colin Ferguson from Eureka, tracks her down in another town. Or, at least, someone who looks just like her, but who claims to be not an officer of the law absent from Haven, but a waitress with a different name, and a completely different past and life.

There’s a whole posse of great characters in this superb 1989 CBS miniseries adaptation of Larry McMurtry’s equally superb Western novel. But for now, stay with the head of the herd: Robert Duvall gives a career-best performance as Augustus McRae, and Tommy Lee Jones does likewise as fellow retired Texas Ranger Woodrow Call. Given those two actors, claiming a career best is really, really up there. And Danny Glover, Diane Lane, Anjelica Huston – hell, everyone and everything in this miniseries is worth watching, from start to finish. And you can do just that, today, as AMC televises the entire miniseries from 1-9 p.m. ET.

Tonight’s Doctor of note will have the most comprehensive retrospective of any Doctor in this series of specials, but that’s only because the reign of “The Eighth Doctor” lasted only two hours. After the original BBC Doctor Who series, which ran in the U.K. from 1963 to 1989, had gone dormant, the character and storyline were revived for a pilot telemovie in 1996, with the expectations of a new American-produced series to follow. Yet when the Doctor Who made-for-TV movie was shown on Fox and the BBC in 1996, starring Paul McGann as the newest incarnation of the Doctor, it bombed stateside, and the character was shelved until the franchise was relaunched in 2005. So the entirety of McGann’s reign as the Doctor consists of a single telemovie, which BBC America is presenting, also in its entirety, as part of this Eighth Doctor tribute. Co-stars include Daphne Ashbrook as the Doctor’s companion, and Eric Roberts as the Master.

Now Syfy, continuing its run of intentionally absurd creature-feature telemovies, presents Ghost Shark, about a killer shark that’s not only dead, but able to surface wherever there’s water. (The best reason ever for keeping the toilet seat lid down.) Recommended only as a so-bad-it's-still-bad type of entertainment.

SERIES PREMIERE: This new British import is another example of TV’s current fixation with single-crime limited series and extended stories, a mini-genre that, in essence, also includes Top of the Lake, The Killing and The Bridge. What distinguishes Broadchurch, initially, isn’t its plot or the way it’s unfurled. It’s the photography (one early shot is a very extended, complicated tracking shot, following a character as he walks through much of his small town and interacts with its citizens), and the two leading actors. Former Doctor Who star David Tennant plays a recent arrival in Broadchurch, a reassigned detective – and Olivia Colman plays the local officer whose promotion he has effectively stolen. Watch for them, and decide if you’re intrigued enough to stay.
