COLLIDER: Anna Silk Interview LOST GIRL
by Christina Radish
January 16th, 2012
The drama series Lost Girl, premiering on Syfy January 16th, follows supernatural seductress Bo (Anna Silk), a Succubus who feeds on the sexual energy of humans. Having grown up with human parents, Bo discovers that she is one of the Fae – creatures of legend and folklore – who pass as humans while secretly feeding off them. Embarking on a personal mission to unlock the secrets of her origin, Bo decides to help humans and Fae solve mysteries and right wrongs, with the help of her human sidekick Kenzi (Ksenia Solo), and Fae police detective Dyson (Kris Holden-Ried).
During this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, show star Anna Silk talked about what attracted her to this story and character, that she’s hoping U.S. audiences embrace the show the way that audiences have around the world, the challenges of being the lead of a series, how much fun she has exploring the sexual side of her character, that she loves meeting the show’s loyal fans, and that she hopes to continue playing strong, complex women...
... Question: What was it that initially attracted you to this show and the character of Bo? Was there something that really sold you on the concept, as far as the direction it would be taking?
ANNA SILK: "Yes. When you first get an audition, you just get a description of the show and the character, and the scenes that you’ll be auditioning with. They’ll usually give you the script too, if you’re auditioning for a lead role. At first, I just got what the show was about and it said, “Bo is a bisexual Succubus who needs sex to heal.” I was like, “Oh, my god!,” and my husband was like, “Was this written by a fratboy? What is this?” And then, I got the script and I read it. It was created by Michelle Lovretta, who’s incredible, and now it’s been really pioneered by Jay Firestone, and they both have this great vision for the show.
In the original script, I loved that this character of Bo was not just this sexual creature that feeds on energy. She was really thrown into this world. She grew up thinking she was human, and now, suddenly, she’s part of this whole Fae underworld, and she’s a Succubus, and all of these questions have to be answered. I loved that she was really this fish-out-of-water, that she was so vulnerable, that she was so scared, and that her power was really her greatest source of shame. That, alone, had a lot of interest for me because I knew that there was room for growth in that. She wasn’t just this tough, kick-ass character. Her strength really came from the fact that she was so vulnerable. That really stood out, on the page, when I read the initial pilot.
Our initial pilot actually airs as Episode 8, in the first season. That’s kind of crazy! And when you see it, it’s not so different because it fits into the story, but we all look a little different. We all are very dark and very serious because that was the tone of the show. And then, we introduced some lighter elements to it, which I think makes it work. Over the season, we found a nice balance of finding levity in that darkness, but we like that darkness as well. It’s definitely evolved, over the first season and into the second season. I liked that Bo was not just this sci-fi sex creature, which is what it first appeared to be. Every time we got a new script, it would be like, “Wow, okay, that’s pretty cool.” And the guest star roles on our show are so great. People get to come on and they’re really excited to be on the show and get to play either a Fae creature or some bad-ass human. It’s cool. What’s special about Lost Girl is that it covers that folklore and mythology in such a rich way. Every minute of the episodes, we’re learning something new about the world that they’re living in..."

AMERICAN EXPERIENCE - CUSTER'S LAST STAND - PBS VIDEO: EPISODE TRAILER - AIRS TUESDAY, JANUARY 17, 2012 AT 8/7C
This two-hour biography of one of the most charismatic and contradictory American leaders of the 19th century takes viewers on a journey from Custer's memorable charge at Gettysburg to his lonely death on the windswept Plains of the West. Along the way, viewers learn how this supremely ambitious son of a blacksmith ricocheted from triumph to disaster, from battlefield heroism to impetuous escapade. In the end, Custer's reputation was saved by the wife he adored, who almost single-handedly turned the Battle of the Little Bighorn into one of the most iconic events in American history and mythologized Custer's role — turning it into a tale of heroic sacrifice with only the most noble of motives.

... the second season of Syfy's underwhelming adaptation of the British Being Human (9/8c), where casting is even more of an issue. (The far superior original is returning to BBC America for a fourth season on Feb. 25, but minus some key cast members, so it remains to be seen how well that will hold up.)
In Syfy's version of the three-ghouls-sharing-a-house premise, set in a very unconvincingly faked (in Montreal) Boston, dark-and-handsome Sam Witwer fares the best at conveying the timeless angst of reluctant vampire leader Aidan, and his is the strongest storyline, evoking the metaphor (familiar from Twilight, True Blood and The Vampire Diaries, to name just a few) of feeding as addiction. Abstaining from live kills though sorely tempted, Aidan finds himself playing babysitter and advisor to the Vampire Queen's daughter Suren, a pouty "errant princess" he must groom to take control of the Boston pack. As played by Dollhouse's exotic Dichen Lachman (who doesn't appear until next Monday's episode), Suren brings some much-needed attitude to this largely toothless enterprise.
Aidan's roomies, earnest werewolf Josh (Sam Huntington, mugging as if he were in a sitcom) and shrill ghost Sally (the unbearable Meaghan Rath), are less palatable company, and it doesn't help that Huntington has zero chemistry with Kristen Hager as the nurse/girlfriend he may have turned wolf during the last full moon. (Hard to imagine, but MTV's Teen Wolf is telling this sort of story with much more verve, wit and style.)
As the show's title suggests, what these characters desire above all is normalcy, the sense of being human. (Sally's best moment, in episode 2, comes when she takes possession of a partygoer's body and is blissfully able to experience the various senses again, if only briefly.) I'd settle for them just being interesting...

... It's the libido that's exploding on Syfy's provocative Lost Girl (10/9c), a saucy Canadian import that owes a big debt to Buffy the Vampire Slayer in the sexually charged misadventures of a soul-sucking succubus named Bo (Anna Silk, an action-figure version of Mary Louise Parker). Bo knows she's special — her literal kiss of death is a giveaway — but she has to learn the hard way that's she part of the "Fae" race and must choose to follow either the Light or Dark subculture. "I was not expecting Thunderdome," she wisecracks when put to a violent survival test.
With the help of a punk sidekick (scene stealer Ksenia Solo), Bo forges her own path, trying to keep her lethal desires under control, and the action and whimsy help compensate for an overall flatness in the rest of the ensemble casting and low-budget production. I'm still waiting to be seduced — but Lost Girl is already well into its second season in Canada, so there's plenty of time for it to find its way...

TV WORTH WATCHING: BEST BESTS MONDAY, JANUARY 16, 2012
... LOST GIRL
Syfy, 10 p.m. ET
SERIES PREMIERE: Just when you thought TV couldn’t possibly come up with any new angle, much less a new subject, for a genre show, here comes one. This Canadian import stars Anna Silk as Bo, a woman who, like Anna Paquin’s Sookie on HBO’s True Blood, discovers that her unusual powers stem from an unearthly, or at least inhuman, source. Sookie turned out to be a fairy, but Bo is a succubus – in folklore, a female demon who has sexual intercourse with sleeping men. (Well, hey -- it explained wet dreams.) In Lost Girl, she has the power to kill men with her kiss – or, showing a little vampire-like restraint, just to drain them a little. And once she teams up (platonically) with punk street urchin Kenzi (Ksenia Solo), the two of them try to survive, while caught between the good and evil supernatural bloodlines trying to claim Bo as their own. The first two episodes aren’t great – but they’re unusual enough to sample.
