MAJOR CRIMES - STARRY CONSTELLATION MAGAZINE: JONATHAN DEL ARCO INTERVIEW
June 2013
by Jamie Steinberg
... Q) Please tell us what is new this season on "Major Crimes" and with your character Dr. Morales.
Jonathan Del Arco: "Well, thus far (we are into episode six) in the filming process there are no major headlines for Morales. And even though I'm now a series regular, my job has not changed much and neither has Morales'. But as the second half of the season progresses, I'm told that there is more character development for him/me so I'm excited to see what other dimensions we see. As for the show, I have to say that the writing thus far has been stellar and there are some great character relationships and stories developing. I think the fans are going to be really happy with the quality of the show. I don't want to give too much away, but it's gonna be good guys!"
(Cast of Major Crimes)
Q) What originally made you want to be a part of the show?
Jonathan Del Arco: "Well I really felt "The Closer" had a lot more life in it and there was still so much more I wanted to explore with Dr. Morales. I mean, before "The Closer" I had worked with James Duff on a previous show "The D.A." in which I also played the coroner, even though I'm phobic of dead bodies. I guess that's kind of funny! Anyway, James is the best writer in Hollywood so I always jump at the chance to say his words and he's a dear friend. So, what better job to have right? I had also worked with Mike Robin on "Nip/Tuck" where I did a three episode arc and like James he's also the best at what he does which is directing and producing. He just brings out some of my best work and makes me feel very safe exploring some of my darker sides. So, the Duff/Robin combo plus having a steady job where both great reasons to continue on the journey and working with the cast and crew who are like family was also a perk..."

Falling Skies - Collider: Showrunner Remi Aubuchon Interview

COLLIDER: Remi Aubuchon Talks FALLING SKIES Season 3, Topping Previous Seasons, Revealing More Mythology, Hiring Doug Jones and Stepping Down as Showrunner
by Christina Radish
June 10th, 2013
The TNT drama series Falling Skies has returned for its third season, as the epic battle between humans and aliens continues. Seven months have passed since viewers last saw the survivors of the 2nd Mass, led by Tom Mason (Noah Wyle), and now that they’ve teamed up with Volm and a band of rebel Skitters, the human race looks like it might just have some hope. Executive produced by Steven Spielberg, the show also stars Moon Bloodgood, Will Patton, Drew Roy, Connor Jessup, Maxim Knight, Sarah Carter, Colin Cunningham and Seychelle Gabriel, along with Doug Jones, Gloria Reuben and Robert Sean Leonard.
While at the show’s press day, showrunner/executive producer/writer Remi Aubuchon spoke to Collider at both a roundtable and a 1-on-1 interview about how challenging it is to top their previous seasons, what the new faces bring to Season 3, deciding how much mythology to reveal each season, what led them to hire Doug Jones to bring the alien Cochise to life instead of doing it through CG, whether the humans’ suspicions of the Volm are justified, how difficult it was to decide to step down as showrunner and pursue his dream of writing science fiction novels, and how he will definitely keep tuning in, as a viewer...
... Collider: What led you from initially wanting to do Cochise with CGI to hiring Doug Jones?
Remi Aubuchon: "Initially, we were trying to figure out a way to have a CG character. Steven [Spielberg] is the master of aliens. There’s thought that he actually has met aliens. But, his standards are exacting and what he really wanted was not to have people in blue make-up. What we, as writers, wanted was real interaction between the human actors and our alien. We wanted there to be intimate scenes where they’re touching or at least in close proximity with each other. While Noah [Wyle] is a master at acting with a tennis ball, which is what he had to do for the Espheni, we felt strongly that we needed a real actor there (for Cochise), who could interact with them, as a character on the set. We went through a lot of iterations. We were talking about motion capture and wearing the suit with the dots. I’ve been a fan of Doug Jones for a very long time, and certainly since Hellboy. I kept asking people, “Is that CG?,” and they said, “No, that’s actually an actor in a suit.” I said, “I don’t understand how that works. How does he make it come alive?” And then, I watched Doug work. The suit that we have for Cochise is just a piece of rubber, but when Doug puts it on, it comes alive. We are very lucky that we were able to get a master like Doug to portray that character. It saved our butts. We probably would have had Cochise on screen for about a third or maybe even a quarter of what we were actually able to have, because of the expense of doing motion capture and CG..."

... Question: What is your opinion on the will they/won't they dynamics on the NCIS franchise? I have enjoyed both the Tony/Ziva relationship on NCIS as well as the Kensi/Deeks relationship on NCIS: LA. But after eight years on NCIS Tony/Ziva has not shared their first "real" kiss, while after only four seasons we got to celebrate one for Kensi/Deeks. Since both shows have the same premise, why do you think the original NCIS is holding back on advancing the Tony/Ziva relationship in the same manner? I know a lot of shows cite Moonlighting as their reasoning, but I feel that shows like Castle proves it can work. — Cheryl
Matt Roush: There's a difference between a show like Castle, whose entire premise is built on a core relationship and calibrating the sexual-romantic tension from season to season, and an ensemble drama like the NCIS shows, where a different balancing act is required. I've often felt the mothership's show runners have kept Tony and Ziva on a very slow burn so they don't overwhelm and take over the show with a workplace love story. I'm not a regular NCIS: LA watcher (my rule: one is enough for almost any franchise), but Kensi and Deeks aren't nearly as central to the action as Tony and Ziva are in their world, so there's less risk involved in moving their relationship forward. That's just my theory, but it makes sense to me. And for what it's worth, no one really believes in the Moonlighting curse. It's all about the execution...

... Question: So I was watching two shows I really like this week coming to the end of their seasons. The first, Orphan Black, is not so well known, though I expect that is in the process of changing. The other, Game of Thrones, is very well known and discussed. I realized as I watched these shows, how little the first one has any type of spoilers and with the second, as well read and known as it is, that I hadn't had it spoiled for me prior to this episode. I have watched many shows both with and without knowing spoilers, and after watching Thrones, I'm almost convinced that I should never read about shows prior to watching them again. I was completely taken by surprise with the events in the episode and as a result it had a much more visceral impact on me than if I had known some of the things to come. Let's have more non-spoiler columns such as yours. — George
Matt Roush: Well, thanks. I am by nature spoiler-averse, preferring to experience things with the element of surprise — or in the case of Thrones, shock and dismay — intact. (Although with Thrones, I read the first three books years before HBO began filming them, so I knew what was coming — and in writing that weekend's TV roundup, hesitated even calling attention to the episode, but figured putting it in context to pivotal penultimate episodes of past seasons was the way to go.) Knowing in advance that characters (even if unnamed in leaked teasers) are going to die or hook up or whatever seems such a self-defeating way to approach the medium. That said, not every piece of information or reporting about a show should be construed as a spoiler. I don't mind reading set pieces and producer/actor interviews in advance of a season or even season finale if the intention is to put the show and its characters in context as long as they don't give too much away — because then what would be the point of watching? Same goes for reviewing, which is my job as critic. I'm often writing about shows based on advance screeners throughout a season, careful not to spoil crucial events while also giving my opinion when possible of episodes that I feel are particularly "must-see." I'd like to think that enhances the experience rather than spoils it...
Game of Thrones season four premieres Spring 2014 on HBO.
Orphan Black season two premieres in 2014 on BBC America.
