STARPULSE: Getting Acquainted With Versatile Actress Elyse Levesque

From space to small, scenic towns, the present to the past, you can find Elyse Levesque pretty much anywhere. BFTV recently caught up with the talented Canadian actress, who can now be seen in the Hallmark Channel original series Cedar Cove, to find out more about her diverse resume - and her surprising extracurricular activity.

Although she's been working for years, she doesn't necessarily believe she's 'made it' as an actress. "I don't know if I've even had that moment yet," Elyse told us. "I still feel like I haven't quite reached that point yet in my career. I'd probably have to say that the moment where I felt like 'Okay, I'm on the right track' was when I booked Stargate Universe a couple years ago. That was kind of the first bigger production that I was a part of. I had done, when I was younger, some series regular [roles] on some smaller shows. [But] being a part of this great ensemble was a big moment where I was like 'Okay, I'm doing the right thing with my life.'"

Indeed, most readers will know her for the time she spent playing the main role of Chloe Armstrong on SGU, the second live-action spinoff from the popular series Stargate SG-1 (which was itself taken from the feature film Stargate). And Elyse still looks back on that part fondly two years after the show's cancellation. "In some ways, it was possibly one of the best jobs I could've been given," she explained. "It was such a well established franchise and it already had a built in audience. The production itself was like a well oiled machine at that point.

"So I kind of came into something that was this well functioning organism. It just made it very easy. It was a really positive work experience. It was a game-changer for me in a lot of ways. It opened a lot of doors. I feel like those two years of my life were when I started to grow up more and take on more responsibility. I feel like I grew as an actor and an artist over that period..."

... My Fanbase: Playing in a scifi show can probably be very demanding for actors. Is there something you wouldn't say or do in terms of storyline even in a high quality program?

Elyse Levesque: There are moments every now and again, where what is scripted doesn't ring true to the character. We were fortunate that our writers and producers were open to hearing our thoughts, and collaborating with us...

Stargate Universe meets its "Destiny" tonight, after just two seasons and earlier than its makers hoped.

The imaginative, often absorbing space opera about a team of explorers stranded aboard a spaceship called Destiny finds the survivors in a blue mood as tonight's series finale opens. Even constantly scheming physicist Nicholas Rush (Robert Carlyle) seems oddly subdued and out of ideas; his fellow shipmates, tired of his cold calculations and Machiavellian chess moves, have just about had it with him, anyway. Short of telling them, "Wake up and you'll learn it was all a bad dream," nothing he could say will satisfy them.

Which pretty much sums up the feeling of soon-to-be-starved Stargate fans. The demise of Stargate Universe ends one of the most remarkable runs in science-fiction TV. Aside from the ageless Doctor Who, no TV sci-fi serial has boldly gone where no one has gone before, over such a long period of time.

The original Stargate SG-1 dawned in 1997. To give you an idea of how long ago that was, the most-watched shows on TV that year were Seinfeld, ER, Friends, Home Improvement and Touched by an Angel. In the end, Stargate SG-1 lasted 10 seasons -a full decade -and in 2004 spun off the companion series Stargate Atlantis, which itself lasted five seasons.

Stargate Universe had its fans -its dark, dyspeptic view of a future gone wrong struck a responsive chord in some, but not all Battlestar Galactica fans -but in the end Universe's audience was too few to warrant a third season.

And so Universe ends tonight [in Canada], with a quiet, elegiac finale that's more about the map of the human heart than a splashy, outer space shoot-'emup. There's no need to give away any of the plot -no spoilers here -but watching the finale, it's hard to shake the feeling there are things about Stargate Universe that will be missed: Nicely understated performances from acting veterans Ming-Na and Carlyle, who can do this kind of thing in his sleep, but also young, Canadian ingenues like Alaina Huffman, Elyse Levesque and Louis Ferreira.

Even those Stargate fans who aren't satisfied by how Universe ends will appreciate some of the decisions that went into the finale. There are moments here of real poignancy. And poignant is not something one usually associates with sci-fi TV. (Space, 10 ET/PT)

Recently though, Chloe Armstrong has been quite the asset to the Destiny crew thanks to her residual alien knowledge growing self confidence. Daddy's little girl is all grown up.

The beautiful Elyse Levesque has ten things she'd like you to know about her. Read on:

1. Born and raised in the city that rhymes with fun. Regina. That's right! It sounds like....

2. Am one third of a rap group known as "Coupla hot chicks...maybe three". Am also frequently referred to as the "maybe" of the trio. Whatever, I'll take it for the team.

3. Not a fan of seafood. Yes, that means I don't eat sushi.

4. Three of my front teeth are capped, after a dodgeball incident in grade 7 gym class.

5. Am an only child.

6. Am a yogi.

7. Am obsessed with perfumes that smell like dessert.

8. Lived in Taipei, Osaka, Tokyo, Athens, Milan, Munich, Madrid and Barcelona between the ages of 18-20.

9. Fluent in French. Sort of.

10. Have a fascination with accents. I tend to bust out into them at the most inopportune times.

... Joseph Mallozzi: "“And now I’m working on the opening teaser of what will be my last episode this year. It’s called The Hunt and it’s going to air as number 16. In it, we go off-world, and two of our people go missing, so it then turns into a rescue op. Although it’s called The Hunt, because obviously there’s a ‘hunt’ element to it, there are other things going on in the story. One is this sort of debate about the potential intelligence of animals and whether it’s right to kill them. There’s also this other [story] element involving one of our characters and something he or she experienced in an earlier episode. This has an impact on their response to a situation in The Hunt and they have to come to terms with it.

While all this is happening on the planet, back on Destiny, Rush, Brody and Eli make another significant discovery. Season two is fraught with discovery, and, again, very early on we came across a key part of this ship, and then in this episode we find something else that is going to play into our season finale.

Production-wise, I think The Hunt will probably be the most challenging of the three I’ve written this season just because we go off-world, which means we’ll be going on-location, and we have to find the right location. So far we’ve steered clear of forested planets. We did visit one last year in Faith, but since then we haven’t really done anything like that. We visited a desert planet this season in Malice; those scenes were shot down in New Mexico and the episode looks stunning. We want The Hunt to look just as unique, which means we’ll probably be going a little bit out of the way for a location, although still in British Columbia. So that should be interesting...”

... Anyway, Mark swung by my office yesterday morning to show me, among other things, an early version of the creature cam/pov for my episode, The Hunt.

... Mark was suggesting desaturating it a little to give it a more alien feel, but I kind of like the sharpness of the colors and the rainbowing effect on the edges of the tunnel vision.
