SCIFI AND TV TALK: The Cape's James Frain - Double Trouble
by Steve Eramo
2/16/2011
Superman had Lex Luthor, Batman and Robin had The Joker (among others), The Fantastic Four had Doctor Doom – throughout comic book history, all superheroes have had their arch enemies, and The Cape is no exception. In the NBC superhero drama series, our protagonist, Vince Faraday, whose alter ego is the comic book superhero The Cape, is pitted against Peter Fleming, also known as Chess. Good-looking, rich, powerful and resourceful, this antagonist knows how to work a crowd. No one has any idea of the twisted mind lurking behind Fleming’s entrepreneurial façade, which makes portraying the two-faced character a challenge for actor James Frain, but one he thoroughly relishes.
“It’s partly the nature of the beast that there is so much going on in The Cape in terms of setting up these characters and our story, that it has taken us a while to get into the flow of things and, for me, to find out who my character is and where the writers want to take him,” says Frain.
“The direction we’re been going in is that Peter Fleming’s grasp on the Chess character is not as solid as it first seemed. In fact, it seems to be rooted in some kind of traumatic event and that once upon a time he may have created the Chess persona as a way of handling that [trauma]. Over time, though, it’s become a bigger problem for him than he first imagined, and I think that’s a really fascinating direction in which to take that idea.
“Chess is completely amoral and psychotic, but in a way that is quite cold and clinical. Just imagine if you had dark and difficult parts of yourself that you didn’t know how to deal with, so you put them in one place and then chose to go that place and become that person without any of your good qualities or range of emotions. What if you adopted that ‘mask’ and told yourself, ‘I have permission to be totally without consequence or morality,’ which is what Chess seems to be..."

... Fringe
(Friday, 9/8c, Fox)
Oh my freaking stars, how great has Fringe been lately? The emotional stakes couldn't be higher as Peter is torn not only between two Olivias, but he's also at the center of the battle between the warring parallel universes. And now there's a baby brewing in Alt-Olivia? Madness! This week, we're back in Our World, as Peter and Real-livia work to repair the recent damage done to their relationship (bringing her the proper coffee would be a good start), and Walter prepares a surprise breakfast for his favorite lovebird agents. Plus, there's a case involving a grieving widow. Hope there are no yucky bugs.

WHAT'S ON TV: Outcasts' Amy Manson: I love being Fearless Fleur!
Feb 16, 2011
As things get critical on planet Carpathia, Amy Manson reveals more about her character Fleur Morgan...
... So is Fleur in the series to represent all things good on Carpathia?
Amy Manson: "She always thinks of other people beyond herself. More humanity comes from Fleur than many of the others there. She does question why all the time. She's more understanding of the ACs – the 'outcast' human clones - than others on Forthaven. She has a connection with the AC leader Rudi, that's mesmerising, and there's the possibility that I might be one of them! Fleur left Earth when she was a young child, so she has no real memories."

TOTAL SCIFI ONLINE: Liam Cunningham and Hermione Norris: Brave New World
Posted on Thursday 17 February 2011
by Paul Simpson
n BBC One’s new series Outcasts, Liam Cunningham and Hermione Norris headline the cast as Forthaven President Richard Tate and Head of Security Stella Isen. At the show’s launch, they told Paul Simpson about what attracted them to the science fiction show...
... What appealed to you about the roles?
Liam Cunningham: The old cliché of wanting to hold a mirror up to society, which is the artist’s job. The idea of setting up a new society on the planet meant we could examine whatever is going on here globally or interpersonally. It was a wonderful stage to have. There aren’t reference points – it exists on this planet Carpathia, somewhere else...
Hermione Norris: I think the concept is incredibly bold. I was fascinated to play a character that I could use as a conduit to explore society and its survival, and the grief over what has been left behind. On a backdrop where people are placed in confined circumstances, any emotion is intensified. Relationships are heightened – humanity is heightened. As an actor, obviously, that’s what appeals: the framework of people’s relationships, human life, the importance of birth, love...
BBC's new series, "Outcasts," premiered on Monday, February 7 at 21:00 on BBCOne, and will also air in the US on BBC America [premiere date pending].

TV GUIDE: Big Bang's Howard Makes His Sophie's Choice: Mom or Girlfriend?
Feb 16, 2011
by Joyce Eng
For Howard, The Big Bang Theory's resident womanizer, choosing between two women would appear to be the ideal predicament. Except when one of those women is his mother.
"This is his Sophie's Choice," Simon Helberg, who plays Howard, tells TVGuide.com. "He likes the ladies, but does he like his mom a little bit more?"
Viewers will find out on Thursday's episode when Howard's girlfriend, Bernadette (Melissa Rauch), puts his affections to the test. After a romantic evening together at Bernadette's place, Howard gets ready to go home, once again, to his overbearing, overprotective and heretofore unseen mother (voiced by Carol Ann Susi). Unsurprisingly, that does not sit well with Bernadette, who gives him an ultimatum: choose her or his mother...
