Doctor Who - Nerdzilla: Paul McGann Audio Interview

Paul McGann - the longest and shortest Doctor Who - Audio Interview
British actor Paul McGann is both the longest-serving Doctor Who, and the one with the least screen-time.
He starred in the ill-fated 1996 TV movie as the eighth Doctor, his one and only appearance on screen in that role. But he kept the title while the series was on hold, until Christopher Ecclestone took it over in 2005.

SMALLVILLE's Erica Durance: "Part of Lois Lane Legacy"
By Jenna Busch
posted: 19 January 2011
Smallville fans are some of the most loyal out there. The day Newsarama spoke to Erica Durance, who plays Lois Lane was #DuranceDay on Twitter. It's a tough task to take over an iconic role that so many others have done so well, but Durance made it her own in one episode flat. We chatted with Erica at this month's TCA's and got some info on what's coming for her character, a bit of bachelorette craziness and whether or not she'd do a Smallville movie...
... Nrama: Talk a bit about working with the team now that they know that you know. What sort of interaction are you going to have with them? Are you part of it all now, or are you still on the outskirts?
Durance: Well, I am getting introduced to different sorts of things. I'm just trying to find my niche and how I fit into things. What's lovely is actually getting to be a part of that Lois Lane legacy, so now I can contribute in the way that she does. Being a journalist and getting to investigate and going off on her own and kind of digging deeper and doing it the human way. Without any magical powers. [laughs] And what I love about her is that she often comes to the same conclusions as they do, but she obviously doesn't have the extra gifts. It's just being human and being tenacious. And there is a little more camaraderie between her and Tess (Cassidy Freeman) and Tess can see good things about Lois. They've always gone head to head but now they're kind of on the same team. All working for a common good. Most recently I just shot something where I went under cover, sleuthing for her, so that will be a fun one...

SPACE Orders Fourth Season of Original Production SANCTUARY
SPACE, Canada’s science fiction, speculation and fantasy channel, announced today that it has green lit the fourth season of its original Canadian series, SANCTUARY. A critical and fan favourite since its premiere in 2009 on SPACE, production is slated to begin on 13 new episodes of the multiple award-winning show this Spring, due to air this Fall on SPACE.
“We’re thrilled about the extraordinary support SPACE has provided since the beginning,” said series creator and executive producer, Damian Kindler. “They were the first to recognize Sanctuary’s potential and are the foundation upon which all of our success rests.”
Viewers can catch-up on SANCTUARY Season 3.0 staring Friday, Jan. 21 at 9 p.m. ET on SPACE and on-demand at spacecast.org. Season 3.5 is slated to premiere on SPACE this Spring.
Full of twists and turns, the exciting third season raised the bar with gripping storylines and new characters. SANCTUARY follows the adventures of the enigmatic scientist Dr. Helen Magnus (sci-fi icon Amanda Tapping) who with her team, shelter a clandestine population of strange and sometimes terrifying beings, most believe don’t even exist. Along with forensic psychiatrist Dr. Will Zimmerman (Robin Dunne), Kate Freelander (Agam Darshi), a witty, sarcastic, but savvy former swindler, and über-geek weapons designer and computer expert Henry Foss (Ryan Robbins), Magnus seeks to protect these imperiled phenomena while unlocking their mysteries.
The first North American series to exclusively use the industry-changing RED® camera to enhance its awe-inspiring images and locales, SANCTUARY has been nominated for more than 50 awards including a primetime Emmy® for “Outstanding Special Visual Effects” in 2008. It won a Gemini Award for “Best Visual Effects” in 2009 and is also the winner of 11 Leo Awards.
Shot in Vancouver, SANCTUARY is a SPACE original production. Rebecca DiPasquale is Manager of Development for SPACE. SANCTUARY was created and executive produced by Damian Kindler (STARGATE SG-1, STARGATE ATLANTIS), and executive produced by Amanda Tapping, Martin Wood with Andrea Gorfolova, Carrie Mudd and Keith Beedie. Sanctuary is produced by My Plastic Badger Productions and The Beedie Group, in association with Tricon Films and Television.
SPACE’s ongoing support of Canadian independent productions has been a major contributor to the success of series such as TODD & THE BOOK OF PURE EVIL, SANCTUARY, THE LISTENER, DEFYING GRAVITY, STORMWORLD, and RABBIT FALL. Documentaries include FAMOUS MONSTER and PRETTY BLOODY.

Syfy Renews 'Sanctuary'
Orders a Fourth Season of Amanda Tapping Scripted Series
by MCN Staff -- Multichannel News, 1/18/2011
Syfy said it has commissioned a fourth season of scripted series Sanctuary.
Production of the new 13-episode season will begin this spring in Vancouver, aiming for a fall 2011 premiere.
The show, starring Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis alum Amanda Tapping, has continued to perform well at a time when some other high-profile sci-fi series on the network have faltered. Syfy canceled Caprica, a spinoff of hit drama Battlestar Galactica, midway through its freshman run, and denied Stargate Universe a third season, seemingly ending the Stargate franchise's extended run on the network.
SGU fans and producers partly blamed a move from "Sci Fri Friday" to Tuesday nights for a falloff in that show's audience, so Sanctuary may have benefited from staying on Friday nights, after the network reversed a plan to move it to Tuesday.
Sanctuary's third-season premiere on Oct. 15 drew nearly 1.8 million total viewers on a live plus same day basis, according to Nielsen figures, and has been consistent in drawing between 1.25 million and 1.5 million viewers to episode premieres using that yardstick...

Primeval - Total SciFi Online: Ruth Kearney Interview

Total SciFi Online: Ruth Kearney Interview
At the heart of the Anomaly Research Centre (the ARC) in season four of Primeval sits new character Jess Parker, monitoring the screens that indicate anomaly activity. She’s one of the key members of the new set-up, as actress Ruth Kearney explains to Paul Simpson…
... How does Jess fit into the team?
Ruth Kearney: She is basically filling a new slot that was never anyone’s specific job before. She has taken over as the lady who sits in front of the Anomaly Detector, who is on the ball watching each of the characters when they’re out in the field, checking whether they’re safe and where they’re gone.
When an anomaly comes up, she sends them on the way and then she’s like Mission Control, very important to the team. She keeps them all on their toes, but is watching their backs – and at the same time has her eye on everything else that is going on around her in the ARC.
She’s a very interesting character – there are two sides to her. She’s so efficient and amazing when she’s working, but the minute she turns off the computer, she’s very girly.
I think she really enjoys having Abby back. She treats her and Connor like they were celebrities: she’s in awe of them when they arrive back from the Cretaceous. She’s thrilled to have another girl around. She gets on very well with Matt and Becker, obviously, but she’s a girly girl at heart, so I think she enjoys having that sort of relationship...
Primeval is currently airing on ITV1 on Saturday nights (UK) and on BBC America (US) at 9/8C.

Interview: Sam Huntington And Meaghan Rath From 'Being Human'
by Emma on January 17, 2011
We had the pleasure of chatting with Being Human writers/producers Jeremy Carver and Anna Fricke, as well as main characters Sam Huntington (Josh) and Meaghan Rath (Sally)...
... Q: How well do all of you guys get along working on the show?
Sam Huntington: Swimmingly, from everyone all across the board. You know, I've been asked a lot since we've wrapped, so what was it like? And I can say, speak completely from my heart when I say, it's probably - you know, obviously the material is amazing and it's a dream come true, really, but I've got to say, for an experience the people have made it for me, everyone, all across the board.
So, we're really, really lucky. Really, really lucky because potentially, you know, you never know how long the show could go and I felt a lot about how awful it would be if I didn't love everyone so, so, so, so much.
So, it's been a pleasure.
Jeremy Carver: You know to add, I mean you're doing this show which may be - (the set) of the show is less unique now than maybe it was a couple of years ago but you're dealing with a show where the writers (room) is in Los Angeles, the set is in Montreal and you're dealing with, which is novel to me, I'll speak for myself, the notion of dealing with a French/Canadian crew.
So it's just a little bizarre walking into the set of a show that's for the Syfy Channel and everyone's speaking French. There's a little - it took me a moment to orient myself but...
Anna Fricke: He had a French application on his iPhone...
Jeremy Carver: I did, I had...Yes. And...
Sam Huntington: Hilarious.
Jeremy Carver: But the - I'm talking about everybody on that set were some of the most dedicated professionals...
Sam Huntington: For real.
Jeremy Carver: I mean, they were absolutely the real deal when it came to a crew. I mean, all the way up to the top and because people were so professional and cared so much about what they did, there was a certain trust that set in. And when that trust sets in I think people are - frankly, a certain fear goes away and a certain comfort level kicks in where everybody could afford to be very much themselves because they knew the person they were dealing with was, I'll use a Vietnam reference though I wasn't there, was in the shit with them.
Sam Huntington: Yes.
Jeremy Carver: You know, and I mean these guys up on set worked such grueling, grueling, grueling hours that - the fact that they've emerged with even stronger friendships intact is quite remarkable, I think.
Sam Huntington: I've got to say just real quick too, it's (tough to submit) the material too because everyone believed in it so much that they really, really cared to make it the best that they could.
And, like you said, it goes all the way up just all the way across the board. So that's probably why that was the case because that's not always the case.
Anna Fricke: I don't really think I've ever worked with a cast that's so tightly knit and gets along so well. Usually there's one jerk in the bunch or one diva and that's really not the case here. And I mean even from the beginning, from the audition process, I actually thought that the three of these guys knew each other beforehand because they were that at ease with each other.
But I've just never seen a cast - you know, like part of it is they work grueling hours and they're isolated in Montreal together but I've never seen a cast that so genuinely cared not only about what was going on with them in the episode but what was going on with everybody. Because we always try to make a point after the table reads, since we're not there, to talk to everyone if there are any questions, is there anything that you want to talk about? Any concerns?
And what I've always noticed with this amazing cast is that it's not always about them it's about, well, what's going on with Sally's character, Josh's character? And how does that relate and it's just really refreshing to see. It's a really generous, gracious, cast.
Meaghan Rath: And this is Meaghan. I just want to add that also I think what's amazing is that for the three of us actors, the energy between us in life is very similar to the energy of the characters. And I often feel like the Sam's are my older brothers which is feel is like sort of Sally's whole situation.
They're very protective of me and it's nice. I feel very safe all the time with them and they're the best scene partners you could ask for. I mean, I never have to worry going into a scene with either of them that something won't be there. And if there's anything that I'm worried about beforehand I know that if I just sit there with them in the moment it will all work out because they're so talented.

‘Fairly Legal’: Interview with Creator Michael Sardo
by Lynn DeVries on January 7, 2011
USA Network has a very cool new show called Fairly Legal that will premiere on Thursday, January 20 at 10 pm ET. The series revolves around Kate, an attorney that works as a mediator. I’ve had the opportunity to watch the show’s pilot and it’s got great potential. I’m looking forward to finding out how the characters evolve over the season ahead. [Learn about the show's cast.]
To help us get ready for this new series, the show’s creator and executive producer, Michael Sardo, sat down to answer some questions about hwo the show was conceived and what we can look forward to on it....
... Q: Can you talk about some of the guest stars you have this year?
M. Sardo: We’ve been really fortunate; we’ve had a lot of great people. Gerald McRaney, who plays a judge on the show, he was in the pilot, who we’ve had back several times is just such a fine actor and a joy to have. He’s the kind of actor that you can say, “Gerald can you make that three degrees warmer,” and he goes, “Yes, sure.” “Could you move it half a beat to the left?” “Yes, no problem,” but such a clear characterization of the character.
Richard Dean Anderson comes on a little later in the run as a very interesting person in Kate’s life playing a character that you haven’t seen him play before. We have Ken Howard in the pilot, who just gives this very powerful, wonderful performance. Paul Schultz from Nurse Jackie who plays Eddie the pharmacist is in an episode that gives just a heart wrenching performance. We have now people going out, just as you asked people are going out of my head, my list of guest stars. But those probably the people that you would most know, but we have some just really, really fine actors. Now I can see their faces and not their names, because I got up at 6:00 to take my kids to school this morning...

Sam Witwer Exclusive Interview BEING HUMAN
by Christina Radish Posted: January 18th, 2011
On SyFy’s re-imagining of the popular British television series Being Human, premiering on January 17th, actor Sam Witwer plays Aidan, a seemingly young man who has worked as a nurse in a hospital in Boston for the past several years, but in reality is an over 200-year-old vampire that is trying to sustain himself by not killing humans. While at work, the normally closed-off Aidan meets Josh (Sam Huntington), whose own future was hijacked the instant he was turned into a werewolf. The friendship the two have formed leads to a new sense of normalcy for them both, and they decide to be roommates in a place that they discover is already inhabited by the ghost of its last resident, Sally (Meaghan Rath).
During a recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, Sam Witwer, previously known for his work as Doomsday on The CW series Smallville, talked about how proud he is of his work on Being Human, what it’s like to play a vampire that’s over 200 years old, how quickly he bonded with his co-stars, and his hope that viewers will tune in and give the show a chance, since it is quite different from the original...
... With the original series being so popular, do you think it helps the show that it already has a built-in interest, or is it more nerve-wracking because you have something you actually have to live up to?
WITWER: People think of the Battlestar Galactica remake as one of the best television series ever made. If you take away the sci-fi, it’s still one of the best series ever made. No one remembers that, when that show came out, there was a tremendous backlash and everyone was saying, “Oh, it’s stupid. Starbuck is a girl now. What is all this?” Everyone was really angry, at the time, because of the original series. We’re going to get something similar, when we air. At least, that’s my prediction, but I could be wrong. There are going to be a lot of people who just talk shit, and they’re going to be very angry that this was done in a North American way at all. I’m more concerned with what people are going to be saying a year from now, or half a year from now, once it’s settled in a bit. My feeling on it is that I don’t think people are going to not enjoy the show that we’re making. It’s up to them to decide whether the British version is better or worse. We owe the BBC version and the cast, crew and creators involved, a tremendous debt of gratitude because we have this goldmine that we can just use to mine from. We have 13 episodes to do what they did in 6, and we have all these wonderful opportunities, and that’s because of their hard work and talent.
