It doesn't take long to realize that this two-night miniseries — about Peter Pan's and Captain Hook's origins — could use some pixie dust. In Neverland, Peter (Charlie Rowe) has been raised by Jimmy Hook (Rhys Ifans) in turn-of-the-20th-century London. In return, Peter and his friends pull off burglaries for the shady man. But one heist goes awry when a magical orb they've looted teleports Hook and the kids to Neverland, where they encounter 10-legged crocs, a tribe of Native Americans, and a bumbling band of pirates. Rowe struggles to register, Ifans appears half asleep, Keira Knightley is wasted as the voice of Tinkerbell, and the special effects vary from serviceable to laughable. Instead of soaring, Neverland barely hovers.

Syfy has a tradition of "re-imagining" classic stories in over-the-top revisionist miniseries like Tin Man and Alice, both of which left me cold with their frantic, self-consciously edgy attitude. I much prefer the latest in the series, the two-part Neverland (Sunday and Monday, 9/8c), which adds clever new twists to the origin story of Peter Pan and Captain Hook while remaining unpretentiously faithful to the adventurous spirit of the original.

Mashing up elements of Dickens, Lewis Carroll, The Wizard of Oz and Harry Potter, Neverland introduces Peter (the very appealing Charlie Rowe) as the pied-piper ringleader of a gang of Victorian street-urchin thieves working for Fagin father figure Jimmy Hook (a robust Rhys Ifans). When they get their sticky fingers on a magical orb, it transports them into the magical "Neverland," where 18th-century pirates (led by Pushing Daisies' campy Anna Friel) lie in wait, along with mystical natives and glowing tree-spirit fairies including Tinker Bell (the voice of Keira Knightley).

There are fantastical sights, levitating swordfights and exciting encounters with giant crocodiles and spiders in this lush production, but the heart of the story is Peter's coming of age, his loyalties torn between his lost-boy buddies, the seduced-by-power Hook and the new friends (including Tiger Lily) he finds in this new world. As always, Peter is one storybook hero you never want to tell to "man up." He's happy just how he is, and I'm thrilled that Syfy let him be for a change...

Much like he did with Oz in Tin Man and Wonderland in Alice, writer/director Nick Willing is bringing Neverland to life, in a two-part original movie for SyFy, premiering on December 4th and 5th. An original prequel story to author J.M. Barrie’s classic Peter Pan, Peter (Charlie Rowe) and his young pickpocket pals are rounded up by their mentor Jimmy Hook (Rhys Ifans) to steal a magical orb, which inadvertently transports them all to another world, known as Neverland. Once there, they encounter power-mad pirates, led by the seductive Elizabeth Bonny (Anna Friel), a Native American tribe and a colony of tree spirits that possess a magical mineral dust that enables the pure of heart to fly. As the fight to protect and save this beautiful world escalates, Peter must decide whether growing old somewhere in time is more important than defending the place where he will never grow up.

During this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, writer/director Nick Willing talked about what made him choose to go with a prequel to the Peter Pan story, the importance of remaining faithful to the tone of the book, how he would have loved to have been able to talk to Barrie about his work, assembling such a talented cast for the film, the challenges of bringing a fantasy world to life on a TV budget, and why he always finds himself pulled back to the fantasy genre. He also talked about already working on creating his next SyFy movie about another known fantasy world (he can’t reveal what it is because SyFy has not made the announcement yet), and that he is also creating his own world as a television series, set a little bit in the future...

... Collider: Having explored Oz, Wonderland and Neverland, are there more fantasy worlds that you would like to explore, or would you also like to create one of your own?

WILLING: "I am writing something else, at the moment, that is a fantasy world, but I can’t tell you what it is, or I’d have to kill you. It is another fantasy world that is known, and it is for SyFy, but I’m not allowed to tell you what that is because they’re supposed to announce it, if it gets going. And, I am also working on creating my own world, which is set a little bit in the future. That’s a show that I’ve been writing, on and off, for awhile. That’s a series for television that could run and run. It’s something that I’m very excited about. I don’t want to jinx it, by saying the title out loud, but it is my own invention, although it’s very similar to things that we all know and understand..."

From writer/director Nick Willing (Alice, Tin Man), Neverland – premiering on SyFy on December 4th and 5th – is an original prequel story to author J.M. Barrie’s classic Peter Pan. In 19th Century London, Peter (Charlie Rowe) and his young pickpocket pals are sent out by their mentor Jimmy Hook (Rhys Ifans) to steal a magical orb, which inadvertently transports them all to another world, called Neverland. This mysterious realm includes the power-mad Elizabeth Bonny (Anna Friel) and her band of 18th Century pirates, trapped and in search of the secret to the tree spirits’ magical mineral dust, in order to have the power to fly. As the fight to protect and save this strange and beautiful world escalates, Peter and his crew must face harsh realities, as they learn that never growing up might be preferable to growing up like the corrupt Hook.

During a recent interview to promote the SyFy debut of Neverland, co-stars Rhys Ifans and Anna Friel talked about how they came to be playing such captivating characters, how thrilling it was to be a part of this new backstory, showing the evolution of the Peter and Hook relationship, and what they enjoy most about working in the fantasy genre...




... Collider: Do you see the relationship between Hook and Peter, with the boy who wants to grow up and the man who doesn’t, as a universal and modern story?

IFANS: "What Hook and Peter are presented with, when they arrive in Neverland, is the prospect of eternal life. In many ways, Hook is a lost boy, but a grown man. It was interesting to explore what the offer of eternal life does to a boy, and what the offer of eternal life does to a man. I think it makes a man greedy because a man is closer to death than a child. Eternity to a child offers goodness, and eternal life to a man is essentially corrupting because it involves a certain amount of vanity to embrace it."

FRIEL: "No story had ever before explained why Hook despises Peter so much, and what fascinated me with this script is that you get the story before. Why does this man hate this boy so much? In this case, he doesn’t hate him, he’s just very torn. I think it’s a great arrival at the story we all know. That’s what I found most fascinating, and that’s what Nick cleverly did by giving the backstory of the past between them. Nick created that really beautifully..."

TeenTV is talking with cute Brit Charlie Rowe, 15, (The Golden Compass and Pirate Radio) who plays Peter Pan in “Neverland”, the SyFy Channel’s two-part movie airing on Sunday, Dec. 4 and Monday, Dec.5. The story is sort of a prequel to the famous J.M. Barrie novel and movies you might have seen.

Story goes: Peter (Charlie Rowe) is a down on his luck pickpocket whose gang leader is Jimmy Hook. The gang steals a magical orb which transports them to the beautiful world of Neverland where a ruling colony of tree spirits is headed by Tinker Bell (the voice of Kiera Knightley). Also there, among others snatched from their own times, is tough pirate chick Elizabeth Bonny (Anna Friel) who is searching, like Jack Sparrow in the last “Pirates” movie, for eternal youth. The gang struggles to save Neverland. Do they leave or stay forever?




... TeenTV: We know Peter Pan “flies”. Can you talk about the stunts you did for that?

Charlie: "Well, I don’t think it was hard. I was just in complete heaven. I was jumping around with swords, sword fighting with Rhys [who plays Hook] and Anna Friel and it was strange and obviously the flying was absolutely amazing being hauled up and down in this cold warehouse. It was spectacular although it does hurt [being hoisted up in a harness]. I really do not recommend it.

We often spent a long time trying to perfect just the movement of the flying. Just the fact that getting the right pose when you jump off and getting the right posture while you’re flying and not trying to look like you’re in serious pain which you were 24/7..."
