CHANNEL GUIDE: “7 Questions” With … Sara Canning of Syfy’s “Primeval New World”

June 6, 2013
By Stacey Harrison

Fans shed more than a few tears when character Sara Canning played exited The Vampire Diaries in 2011, but they’ll get a chance to see the actress back in action this month as Primeval: New World comes to Syfy. The North American spinoff of the British series has Canning playing a predator-control expert who suddenly finds herself trying to wrangle dinosaurs that have found their way to modern-day Vancouver via temporal anomalies. The 25-year-old Canadian native also used to write a blog for teen.com, and was a competitive figure skater in her youth...

sara_canning1 photo sara_canning1.jpg

... Q: What has been your strangest fan encounter?

Sara Canning: "I’ve had a few people actually ask me to sign other people’s photos. I’ve had a number of people send me photos of Candice Accola, a girl I worked with on The Vampire Diaries. She’s beautiful and so lovely, so I guess I’ll take it as a compliment, but I always find it funny."

Q: Tell me about a time when you were starstruck.

Sara Canning: "I met Jeff Bridges a few years ago. I actually heard his voice coming down the hallway before I saw him. I am such a huge fan, and all I could think was, “The Dude is walking down the hallway towards me right now!” He’s just so easily funny, and such a lovely man. I think he really enjoys what he does, and really enjoys meeting and talking with people..."

YAHOO! TV: Robert Taylor: arresting as TV lawman 'Longmire'

By FRAZIER MOORE | Associated Press
May 23, 2013

You may not recognize Robert Taylor as anyone other than the title character he plays on the crime drama "Longmire." But he's no newcomer.

"I've been working pretty solidly for a long time," says Taylor, with a wry throwaway: "Not that anyone would notice, you know what I mean?"

But not that he appears to be complaining.

"It's been my goal to work as much as possible, and be as unknown as possible," he insists.

Unknown-ness for the 52-year-old actor may be threatened as "Longmire" [began] its second season A&E, where he stars alongside Katee Sackhoff ("Battlestar Galactica") and Lou Diamond Phillips...

waltlongmireroberttaylor2A photo waltlongmireroberttaylor2A.jpg

... Taylor impressed viewers last summer as Sheriff Walt Longmire, who polices the Big Sky sprawl of Absaroka County, Wyo., with a devotion that's steadfast, laconic and sadder-but-wiser (he mourns the recent death of his wife). He is rangy and grizzled at an age where he can still whip most opponents in a fight, but knows to spare himself that kind of strain whenever he can.

"With young people, it's how brassy and flashy can you be," says Taylor, explaining his portrayal. "But you get a bit older, it's about how restrained can you be. You have to feel it all, think it all, but you don't have to play it — it's just gotta be there, and if the story's good and the script's good, people will see it."

They'll see it on "Longmire." Then again, they may not know it's acting. The portrayal of Sheriff Longmire yields an enormously appealing and relatable character, while Taylor disappears into the role...

Longmire - PMc Magazine: Bailey Chase Interview

A Conversation with LONGMIRE Actor BAILEY CHASE

By Eden Herbstman
Summer 2013

You could say Bailey Chase is a man of the law…his own law that is. As one of the leading actors on A & E‘s hit western crime drama Longmire, his character Deputy Branch Connally knows how to stir the pot and fuel the fire. Branch is a go-getter in every sense, he knows what he wants and doesn’t stop until he gets there. He’s the foil to Sheriff Walt Longmire, and each leading man approaches issues of power and responsibility differently, all set within the small town life of Absaroka County, Wyoming. Some would call Branch ambitious, others maybe the modern day Machiavelli.

Branch’s honor and loyalty are “questionable” at times, but that is precisely what makes him so compelling. Bailey Chase, of course, knows the ins and outs of his character and isn’t afraid to push the limits. Before Bailey put his cowboy boots on for Longmire, he starred as Detective Butch Ada on Saving Grace, a detective with a clearer moral compass than Branch. It’s through Branch’s complexities and flaws though that Bailey can find the humanity and excitement in his character. But don’t let the pretty smile and cowboy hat fool you, there is a lot more to Branch than meets the eye. And more to Bailey Chase as well...

bailey chase photo bailey_chase_zps2211483f.jpg

... Q: How did you prepare for your role as Branch? Did you read any of the books by Craig Johnson that the show is based on to get a feel for the world?

Bailey Chase: "I read The Cold Dish which the pilot drew heavily from. However, Branch is the only main character not in the books. I kind of like that. It gives me free license to do whatever..."

... Q: Do you have any interesting projects coming up that you’d like to tell us about?

Bailey Chase: Tao of Surfing is a film I’m shooting with Lou Diamond Phillips. It’s a beautiful story. I don’t want to give away too much, but my character becomes the catalyst for his best friend, played by Eric Balfour, with surfing as the backdrop. The photography is also stunning.

SCIFI VISION: Exclusive: Lexa Doig Talks Continuum Season 2

Friday, 14 June 2013
by Jamie Ruby

Recently Continuum returned to Syfy for its second season. The series, created and executive produced by Simon Barry, follows Kiera Cameron (Rachel Nichols), a cop from 2077 who is trapped in present day after traveling back in time without her consent with a group of terrorists called Liber8, bent on changing things. One of the interesting things about the series is that the lines are often blurred as it seems Liber8 is trying to create a better and free future, though going about it in the wrong way.

One of the members of Liber8 is Sonya Valentine, played by Lexa Doig, who was left in charge after the death of their leader, Edouard Kagame (Tony Amendola). Originally a doctor as opposed to a soldier, she might have some new ideas about how to continue on. Regardless, she followed through on shooting Liber8 member and lover Travis Verta (Roger Cross), as one of Kagame's last requests. The shot, however, she came to find out, was not fatal.

Doig recently talked to Jamie Ruby of SciFi Vision in an exclusive interview about this season...

lexa doig photo lexa_doig.jpg

... Sonya isn't used to this new type of leadership role, especially because she wasn't trained as a soldier. She may be following Kagame's plan, but it will be in her own way.

Lexa Doig: "She tries to follow Kagame's template without ever having necessarily been in – like it's very funny, because Tony Amendola and I chatted about this this season, and I had sort of said, "Do you think he mentored her? Do you think he brought her in on the planning stuff?" We sort of came to the conclusion that yes, he probably did. Not the planning, you know, of how you're going to accomplish something. Obviously he has to bring someone like Lucas (Omari Newton) in when they're taking over stuff, like with directions and plans. It's like the scene where Kagame and Sonya are playing chess; he's teaching her strategy. So it's the whole thing of he did mentor her through it. But the thing is, when you have a master and [an apprentice], there are many years that go into actually being able to absorb and understand why your leader will make the decisions that they make. Sonya I think tries to follow to some degree Kagame's template. And she doesn't really succeed. She needs to figure out how to do it's her own way. And within that is trying to figure out what the message really was from Kagame."

DAILY XY: Interview with Trenna Keating

June 17, 2013

We’ve been pretty busy watching Defiance recently. Taking place in a war-torn and ecologically devastated Earth after a clash between humans and aliens, Defiance is both an epic drama on the Syfy channel and a multi-platform videogame.

Every science-fiction series needs a doctor, and Defiance gets its medical-know how (and sarcastic jibes) from Doc Yewell, played by Trenna Keating. We caught up with Trenna for a few quick questions...

defiance_alien photo defiance_alien_zpsd30a1cb4.jpg

... Q: What drew you to the character of Doc Yewll?

Trenna Keating: "The writing on the show is great and the audition sides were no exception. Within the five pages or so that I got for my audition, I could tell that Doc was a real character. They really captured her lack of bedside manner in those few pages. I loved her no-nonsense attitude..."

Defiance cast includes Tony Curran, Jaime Murray, Julie Benz, Mia Kirshner, Grant Bowler, Stephanie Leonidas, Graham Greene, Dewshane Williams, Jesse Rath, Justin Rain and Nicole Muñoz.

THE MORTON REPORT: An Ambitious Man: Interview with Longmire's Bailey Chase

By Steve Eramo
June 5, 2013

As Oklahoma City police detective Butch Ada in the popular TNT crime drama Saving Grace, Bailey Chase helped solve brutal homicide cases as part of the city’s Major Crimes unit. Given the actor’s good looks and talent, it is no surprise that he grabbed the viewers’ attention with his performance. When that series ended after three seasons, Chase booked a recurring role on another hit show, FX’s Damages. While working on that series, the opportunity came up for a more permanent gig playing Deputy Branch Connally in A&E’s Longmire.

I had a really nice time being back in New York and working on Damages with some wonderful actresses in Rose Byrne and, of course, the amazing Glenn Close,” says Chase. “Then the pilot for Longmire came along, and originally I was up for the part of Walt Longmire. I loved the character and was excited about the prospect of having my own series, especially as its producers [Greer Shephard and Michael M. Robin] had a great track record with [another TNT series] The Closer.

So I read for them when I was back in Los Angeles during one of my breaks from Damages and everything seemed to go really well, but when they called my agent, they said that they wanted me for the Branch role. If you watched the pilot, you saw that Branch wasn’t quite the man he is today, or that I like to think he is. So I had a side conversation with Greer Shephard, our show runner, who basically told me, ‘You’re perfect for this role. We want an equal adversary for Walt; that’s what will make this show interesting. We’ll treat the pilot script a little bit with regard to your role...’
