STARGATE ATLANTIS - GATEWORLD: Hippocratic Oaths - Paul McGillion Interview

by Chad Colvin
Friday - September 30, 2011

Paul McGillion is a hard man to track down. It’s been a busy two years for the Atlantis favorite. Mere months after Syfy aired the final episode, “Enemy at the Gate,” McGillion popped up in a small role in J.J. Abrams big-screen Star Trek reboot. He followed that up with guest spots on shows like Supernatural, V, Sanctuary and more, slowing down just long enough to get married late last year. While we did get a chance to speak with the actor ever-so-briefly last summer, we’ve been chomping at the bit for a proper sit-down.

That chance came recently when Paul was a guest on the Creation Entertainment Official Stargate Convention tour. In our latest discussion with the man who portrayed one of Atlantis‘ most beloved characters, Paul McGillion talks about the new genre comedy series he has in development, some of the projects you’ll see him in soon, his thoughts on the current television landscape without Stargate in it, and more!

... GW: Let’s talk about professionally what you’ve been up to lately. Tell us a little bit about Captain Starship.

PM: Captain Starship is a pilot that we recently completed. We just finished all the post on it. Myself, Michael P. Northey, Ivon Bartok from Stargate — you know he did all the special features, and Jesse James Miller were co-creators and producers on the show. To sum it up, it’s kind of like Two and a Half Men meets Entourage with a sci-fi twist.

GW: Nice! I could actually handle that.

PM: Yeah, it’s a cool script. Michael came up with it years ago when we did Dragon*Con together and [we’ve] always wanted to do something [together].

So it’s kind of like, I have a nephew that moves in with me, this great young actor named Quinn Lord. He’s an 11 year old, and a lot of my buddies hang out with me — that’s where the Entourage aspect comes into play. Michael Northey is one of them and he doesn’t follow the rules of my house so he has to live in a tent on the roof. It’s quite, hopefully, funny.

Erin Karpluk’s also in it. Michael Shanks guest stars in the pilot and he’s fantastic, he’s hilarious. And Erin Karpluk from Being Erica, a big Canadian show that does well, she plays my girlfriend in it. Hopefully people like it. We just submitted it to the Banff Television and Film Festival, where they pick up new product, in June so hopefully we’ll get a nomination. We’ll see what happens...

CAPTAIN STARSHIP - VIDEO: Trailer

[A] recently helmed a presentation pilot written by Michael Northey called “Captain Starship”. The stellar cast of Paul McGillion, Quinn Lord, Michael Northey, Erin Karpluk, Rick Dobran, Alistar Abel, Donnie Lucas, Jennifer Copping, Gina Charelli and Michael Shanks all helped create a shoot I’ll never forget. Somehow Producer Ivon Bartok kept the 30 cast and crew safe and joyful throughout the 4 day, 1 camera shoot and still managed to keep his perfectly groomed quaf intact.

CAPTAIN STARSHIP - THE MORTON REPORT: Stargate's Ivon Bartok Readies Captain Starship For (Hopefully) Eventual Launch

For 13 years, producer/director Ivon Bartok worked for the long-running Stargate TV franchise, starting out as the assistant to Stargate SG-1 series lead Richard Dean Anderson and executive producer Michael Greenberg. The Toronto native later founded Grey Road Entertainment, a small production company that produced specials and special features for Fox and MGM. Among other things, Bartok himself produced and shot the Stargate DVD special features as well as directed the SGU: Stargate Universe “Kino” webisodes.

Since production wrapped on SGU in the fall of 2009, Bartok has been focusing his creative energy on some of his own projects, including a pilot for a new sci-fi TV series called Captain Starship starring Paul McGillion (Dr. Carson Beckett on Stargate Atlantis). Writing the script, prepping the pilot and ultimately shooting it were all labors of love and a true collaboration involving Bartok, McGillion, actor/writer Michael Northey and writer/producer/director Jesse Miller.

Michael Northey, who plays one of the characters [Dropkick] in Captain Starship and is a really good friend of Paul McGillion’s, came up with the idea for the show,” says Bartok. “It’s a half-hour comedy where Paul’s character of Pauly Sullivan just happens to play the lead [Captain Frank Lucas] in this low-budget sci-fi TV show, but the real story of Captain Starship is about his life outside of work and dealing with his friends and family.

In the pilot, Pauly is forced to make some changes in his life when his nephew Kevin [Quinn Lord] comes to live with him. Michael wrote the pilot script a while back and when we read it we loved it and thought it was really funny. A year or so ago, Michael, Paul, Jesse and I met for lunch and decided, ‘OK, what do we have to do to make this happen,’ and that’s where it all began...

SCIFI AND TV TALK: Captain Starship's Ivon Bartok

By Steve Eramo

What 12-year-old Sci-Fi fan would not love to have a friend or family member who actually stars in his or her own TV series. Kevin Sullivan is one such kid. His uncle is, in fact, Pauly Sullivan, who plays Captain Frank Lucas on Captain Starship. When the preteen’s rock star “groupie,” mom takes off to follow yet another band, Kevin moves in with his uncle. Having such a level-headed kid as Kevin around turns out to be a real wake-up call for Pauly, whose newfound TV success has caused him to lose sight of what is really important in life.

Paul McGillion (Dr. Carson Beckett of Stargate Atlantis fame) stars as Pauly Sullivan/Captain Frank Lucas in Captain Starship, a pilot for a potential TV series. One of its executive producers is Ivon Bartok, who, for the past 13 years as worked for the successful Stargate franchise. He and McGillion recently came together with actor/writer Michael Northey and writer/producer/director Jesse Miller with the hope of bringing Captain Starship to the small screen...

... “Michael Northey, who plays one of the characters [Dropkick] in Captain Starship, is a really good friend of Paul McGillion’s and he came up with the idea for the show,” says Bartok. “It’s a half-hour comedy where Paul’s character of Pauly Sullivan just happens to be the lead in of this low-budget Sci-Fi show, but the real story of Captain Starship is about his life outside of work and dealing with his friends and family. In the pilot, Pauly is forced to make some changes in his life when his nephew Kevin [Quinn Lord] comes to live with him. Michael wrote the pilot script a while back and when we read it we loved it and thought it was really funny. A year or so ago, Michael, Paul, Jesse and I met for lunch and decided, ‘OK, what do we have to do to make this happen,’ and that’s where it all began.

“We wanted to create something we would have fun with. When you’re trying to tell a story, be it a movie, a short film or a TV show, it’s a great deal of work, so we wanted to make sure that we enjoyed ourselves while we were doing it. Paul, Michael, Jesse and I are fortunate enough to know a number of very talented actors here in Vancouver and everyone in Captain Starship are our friends. I mean, bringing someone like Michael Shanks [Dr. Daniel Jackson in Stargate SG-1], who plays Paul’s nemesis, Brock Hunter, was a real coup. Then there’s Erin Karpluk, who is in a very popular Canadian TV show called Being Erica, She plays Paul’s girlfriend [Candace Cooper]. Michael Northey is in Being Erica as well and gave Erin a copy of the Captain Starship script to read. She loved it, too, and said, ‘Yes, I want to come onboard and play that character...’
