... What appealed to you about the roles?

Liam Cunningham: The old cliché of wanting to hold a mirror up to society, which is the artist’s job. The idea of setting up a new society on the planet meant we could examine whatever is going on here globally or interpersonally. It was a wonderful stage to have. There aren’t reference points – it exists on this planet Carpathia, somewhere else...


Hermione Norris: I think the concept is incredibly bold. I was fascinated to play a character that I could use as a conduit to explore society and its survival, and the grief over what has been left behind. On a backdrop where people are placed in confined circumstances, any emotion is intensified. Relationships are heightened – humanity is heightened. As an actor, obviously, that’s what appeals: the framework of people’s relationships, human life, the importance of birth, love...


BBC's new series, "Outcasts," premiered on Monday, February 7 at 21:00 on BBCOne, and will also air in the US on BBC America [premiere date pending].
