Zoie Palmer graciously accepted to talk to Suite101.com in a conversation where she shares some of her thoughts on the success of Lost Girl, her character, the show’s worldwide exponentially growing fan base, and its upcoming premiere in the US [premieres Monday, January 16, 2012 at 10/9C on Syfy]...



... Suite101: How did you find out about the Lauren part on Lost Girl? And what do you particularly like about her?

Zoie Palmer: "I auditioned for the part of that character back in Season 1. And I think that what I like about her is that she's kind of a unique individual on the show, in that she's one of the only humans. And she's a doctor and gets to sort of integrate with the Fae creatures in a way that nobody else does as a human being. She gets kind of insight into their world in a way that no one else kind of in the human world does, including Kenzi. So it's kind of an interesting character that way..."

EDMONTON JOURNAL: Heyerdahl stands out in deeply creepy TV role

B.C.-born Hell on Wheels actor projects menace with his father's voice

Of all the menacing traits Canadian actor Christopher Heyerdahl brings to his role of the Swede, it's that strongly accented voice that probably produces the most chills.

Like most characters on AMC's post-Civil war drama Hell on Wheels (which airs Sunday nights), the Swede arrived at the filthy tent city with a closet stacked high with skeletons. Despite his puzzling moniker, the Swede is actually Norwegian. He's alarmingly tall, impeccably groomed and partial to chokingly tight-collared shirts. So even if he never opened his mouth, he would stand out amid the dirt, mud and blood that has been spilled as the Transcontinental Railway spreads into the wilderness. But he does speak: politely, softly and often with a singsong tone that is more than a little unnerving.

But the voice actually comes from a benign place. "Basically, I'm doing my father," says the soft-spoken actor with a laugh, on the phone from Vancouver. "I think most men end up speaking with their father's voice. This is just an extreme version of that..."



... Born in British Columbia, Heyerdahl spent the first 12 years of his acting career on stage, including stints at Stratford. Since then, he's played historical characters in TV and film, including Charles Dickens and cult author H.P. Lovecraft. But his six-foot-four frame and unique look have allowed him to take on a number of otherworldly characters: Bigfoot in Sanctuary, a demonic "torturer of souls" in Supernatural and a life-sucking alien in Stargate SG-1 [Atlantis]. Among a certain demographic, he is best known as Marcus, the tortured vampire who heads the gatekeeping Volturi coven in the Twilight series of blockbusters.

"How long you spend in the makeup chair is the only real difference," Heyerdahl says about his seemingly larger-than-life creations. "Everything else is based on the fact that it's a being with a heart and a soul and a history and wants and desires, who feels love and pain like everyone else. That's the way to approach any character. Whether it's Bigfoot on Sanctuary or whether it's the Swede, it's irrelevant how people may want to label them.

"With someone like the Swede, there are all sorts of descriptives that are given to the character. For the most part, I can't approach it from any of the more judgmental descriptives. He's a human being and just trying to survive in a very difficult situation..."

NICE GIRLS: MERLIN: Katie McGrath Discusses Bad Girl Morgana

Over the past three seasons of Merlin we have watched Morgana grow from sweet, loving BFF for Arthur, through betrayal and hurt, to evil sorceress. Katie McGrath made us feel all of those changes and it will be interesting to see how she will make us dislike her as Merlin and Arthur’s sworn enemy in season 4. It won’t be easy. Morgana is strong and vindictive – and dangerously beautiful. She can be your most intense friend or your worst nightmare. It will be interesting to see if Merlin can break through her armor this season as she becomes the kingdom’s biggest threat.

Katie spoke about Morgana in a recent interview with Syfy...




... QUESTION: You’ve done a number of projects – most notably MERLIN and the upcoming Labyrinth (again with John Hurt) – that take place during medieval times. Are you drawn to this time period? And if you could’ve picked an era to have lived, what would it be and why?

KATIE MCGRATH: "I think this period is drawn to me. Maybe people don’t see me as believable playing a person of today. I guess I’m just more realistic in a corset and funny hairstyles. (laughs) Still, if I could have picked an era to have lived, I think I would’ve loved to have been one of Louis XIV’s mistresses. They were so fantastic and aristocratic, and they had so much power. And he was such a renaissance man. I think I would’ve fit into that nicely..."

What better place to meet Scott Caan than the Hilton on Honolulu's Waikiki Beach? This dirty great monument to high-rise tourism flashes confidently across the opening credits of Hawaii Five-0. Since he happens to be the breakout star of this recently-rebooted TV series, which is filmed on a sound-stage just a few blocks away, we are therefore in what fans regard as his natural habitat.

To viewers of the show, or at least its modern re-imagining, Caan is Danny "Danno" Williams, a swaggering cop with an occasional temper who spends each episode chasing bad guys and getting told to "Book 'em, Danno!" His preposterous quiff and rolled-up shirt-sleeves are as central to the new "Five-0" franchise as fast cars, shoulder-holsters, and the opening bars of its splendid theme tune...




... One obvious answer would be Hawaii Five-O. The 1970s show was re-launched last year, with an easy-on-the-eye cast and expensive production values. The end result is fun and frothy. Audiences in several continents lap it up (and a second series [season] commences in the UK on 1 January). It is what you might call reliable, mainstream weeknight entertainment; CSI meets Baywatch, with some intriguing narrative journeys into the dark side of Aloha culture.

Caan is probably the best thing about the show. His character, a grumpy foil to Steve McGarrett (played by Alex O'Loughlin) is both the programme's most complex individual and its comic fulcrum. In the first series [season], he chased cops and robbers, and was beleaguered by a broken marriage. This series, his romantic problems continue. Though Caan's own love life is sunnier than his alter ego's – he describes his relationship status as "taken" – he does admit to a similarly melancholic disposition. "I don't think anyone's ever good doing a part where they don't bring a lot of themselves to it. So I think, yeah, I'm a lot like Danno," he says. "Like him, there's a part of me that wakes up miserable every day. And I've got to shake it off. There's a part of me that hates things. I think I'm a pretty cheery person when I meet people. I mean, I have a good outlook. But deep down, yeah, I sometimes want to jump off a balcony..."

Hawaii Five-0 airs Monday at 10/9C on CBS in the US.

... Q: The fourth season of Merlin continues down a darker, more dramatic path. Do you feel the show is following a natural evolution?

Katie McGrath: "The guys (co-creators Johnny Capps and Julian Murphy) have found a formula that works, and they've taken it to the next level with the fourth season. This is clearly their most ambitious. In four seasons, the characters have changed and grown, and the audience has grown with them. Merlin still has all the great comedy and relationships that the audiences adore, but we've gotten more sinister and the show has gotten there in a very organic way. That was the path that was destined for us. Plus the show has gotten more filmic. It's bigger in many ways than when we started, visually and in the storytelling. So our episodes are now more like 14 little cinematic films..."
