TV GUIDE: The Tuesday Playlist: NBC Falls Out Of Love

Apr 23, 2013
by Matt Roush

Way to squander a Voice lead-in, NBC. Turns out America wasn't ready to waste another night of the broadcast week on a ridiculously padded dating show, so after this week, Ready for Love (Tuesday, 9:01/8:01c) goes into reality limbo — and honestly, if scripted duds can get yanked without notice, why should lousy competition-reality shows be exempt when shunned like this one was?

On the plus side, with The Voice about to end its enjoyable "battle" rounds and move next week into the "knockout" phase, the expanded Tuesday edition will be joined April 30 by the clever supernatural thriller Grimm, given a well-deserved reprieve from the Friday trenches for the rest of the season. (Part of me wishes NBC would invest more heavily in Hannibal and give it a shot in this wide-open Tuesday time period, but Grimm is probably a better fit.)

Get ready for another partner swap! After a nuclear explosion in the Pacific renews NCIS' search for stolen nuclear weapons, Hetty sends Callen and Kensi overseas and partners Sam and Deeks stateside. But look for the finale to also pay off this season's exploration of Sam's relationship with his undercover CIA agent wife. "It's a bigger finale than any we've done in terms of the outcomes and what's at stake," executive producer Shane Brennan says.

MOTIVE - ABC VIDEO: NEW SERIES PROMO # 2 - ONLY YOU WILL KNOW THE KILLER - PREMIERES THURSDAY, MAY 23, 2013 AT 9/8C

From Daniel Cerone, the executive producer of "Dexter" and "The Mentalist," comes "Motive," a thrilling crime drama with a unique twist focusing not on who did the crime, but why the crime was committed in the first place.

When murder is committed, Angie Flynn (Kristin Lehman), a loving, single mother and a damned good homicide detective, along with her partner, Detective Oscar Vega (Louis Ferreira), are on the case, looking for clues that will lead them to the killer. But "Motive" turns the tried-and-true crime drama formula on its head by indentifying the Killer and Victim at the beginning of each episode. As the mystery unfolds, winding between revealing flashbacks and present time, viewers will navigate the twisted and complicated maze of each murder, solving the puzzle alongside Detective Flynn and her team, piecing together more of the mysterious connections that drove the Killer to commit murder.

Rounding out the homicide team are Dr. Betty Rogers (Lauren Holly), a medical examiner with a quirky sense of humor that belies the grimness of her daily job; Staff Sergeant Boyd Bloom (Roger R. Cross), the Squad Room Supervisor, who was sidelined from the streets a few years earlier by a bullet; and Detective Brian Lucas (Brendan Penny), a young detective who is eager to learn from the best and is fascinated about the often grisly procedures.

Angie doesn't suffer fools or authority figures lightly; her disarming, street-smart attitude often leads criminals and co-workers alike down the garden path, only to realize later that they've made a major mistake by taking this sexy, sassy force-of-nature at face value. At home Angie only wants the best for her teenage son, Manny, who is one of the few things in life that she feels she did right. But as far as Manny's concerned, being the son of a cop is not the easiest gig in the world.

As Patrick Jane narrows down his list of Red John suspects, the serial killer strikes another pointed blow at Jane by killing someone from his past. (Look for some familiar faces from Jane's carnie days to show up again.) But will Red John's most recent murder be the one that does him in?

"This season has been about Jane digging into the notion that it's not that Red John could be anyone; it's that Red John is one of a very specific set of people that Jane is uniquely qualified to investigate," executive producer Tom Szentgyorgyi says. "The finale is going to pay that off in a way that will completely change the hunt for Red John. We are going to know some very specific things about who he might be."

The team must find a terrorist who landed his hijacked transport plane in Oahu before he is able to carry out his attack. All the while, Kono is on the run for a murder she didn't commit and McGarrett learns some shocking news from Wo Fat. Could it have something to do with what happened between Wo Fat and McGarrett's mother Doris in the safe house? And can McGarrett trust either of them?

"We find our team risking it all by putting their trust in people or things that maybe they shouldn't," executive producer Peter Lenkov says. "We'll see if their faith pays off." As for whether Doris will stick around, Lenkov says, "We've only just begun to scratch the surface on Doris McGarrett. … Her story's not quite done yet." But someone will likely say goodbye. "The English translation of our finale title is 'Farewell and take care,' Lenkov says. "You can take want you want from that."
