AV CLUB: WHAT'S ON TONIGHT? TOP PICK - FRIDAY, OCTOBER 5, 2012

Some guy hangs out with some other guy on tonight's thrilling Grimm

TOP PICK

Grimm

(NBC, 9 p.m., Friday)

In case you were looking for Grimm—which is understandable, given how NBC moves it all over the schedule—it’s back on Fridays. Tonight, Captain Renard meets up with a European acquaintance, which sounds… exciting? We suppose? Then there’s a bunch of foofaraw about the “Wesen” and all the other mythology stuff that makes absolutely no sense to us but might make sense to you, provided you’ve seen every episode of the show like Kevin McFarland has. Maybe you can explain it to us in comments; maybe we’ll even read about it.

... FRINGE

Fox, 9:00 p.m. ET

The Season 5 reboot of this series, launching it decades into a dystopian future, has worked wonders so far, making it even more sinister and foreboding and fascinating than before. The most exciting change is the addition of Etta (Georgina Haig), the grown daughter of Peter and Olivia, who in 2036 has helped her revived-from-suspended-animation parents find one another and rescue their key cohort Walter. But his memories and plans, crucial to saving the future, seem to be destroyed. But are they? This week, we learn more about that – and about Etta.

A Daily Guide To Notable Shows

... Fringe

9-10 PM FOX

The final season has transported us into the year 2036, and Joshua Jackson's Peter and Anna Torv's Olivia are now fighting the fascistic Observers who've taken over the world, alongside their grown daughter, Etta (a steely Georgina Haig). Walter (John Noble) tries to regain access to his Harvard lab, which has been commandeered by the evil baldies, and the series gains a layer of poignance as we see the emotional toll that being part of the Resistance has taken on Etta. Fringe seems to be going out as alt-world fantasy/sci-fi at its most tough-minded yet humanistic.
