MONTREAL GAZETTE: Time travel may help viewers find Sanctuary

By ALEX STRACHAN
October 7, 2011

Sanctuary (Space, 10 p.m.) [Syfy 10/9C], the imaginative homegrown sci-fi series about extratemporal goings-on and supernatural wanderings, is back for a fourth season with an eye-filling, surprisingly heartfelt episode that will satisfy fans and also appeal to the first-time viewer.

It's a time-travel episode, one of those tales that asks a big "what if ?" and leaves the viewer wondering afterward: What if, indeed? If you could travel back in time and change the world, would you?

It's an old sci-fi trope, but there's something gentle and undeniably compelling about Sanctuary's take.

The story finds the show's hero, Dr. Helen Magnus (Amanda Tapping), whisked back to 1898 London, where she's determined to stop a heartbroken father from saving his young daughter, who's stricken with a rare blood disease.

The story, written by series creator Damian Kindler, poses a difficult question: Is it right, or even moral, to stand by and do nothing while an innocent dies, in order to preserve the future?

Sanctuary may be imperfect, but it's a safe haven for viewers looking for a little heart and soul with their scifi flights of fancy...

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS: Stephen Lang loves playing man of action in sci-fi thrillers like 'Terra Nova,' 'Avatar'

BY Ethan Sacks
Friday, October 7th 2011

"Terra Nova" star Stephen Lang may look like he was torn out of a military recruiting manual, but there are days on the Fox sci-fi show's set that he feels like a little boy again.

Filming a recent scene in which he got to launch flaming arrows into the night sky inside the woods of Australia's Gold Coast - where the show films - took him back to his childhood coming of age in the movie palaces of New York City.

"I always wanted to be an actor ever since I can remember," Lang says. "My memories are of seeing Errol Flynn as Robin Hood and ['50s TV show] 'Sergeant Preston of the Yukon.' All these wonderful adventures in movies and on television, people living in these worlds of adventures, riding horses and shooting flaming arrows. And I thought, 'Wow, that's good, I want to do that.'

"I think I had a pretty rich imagination - and here I am doing that..."

... "Sanctuary" season-opener, 10 p.m., Syfy. Time-travel is a lot more fun if you follow the view of "Back to the Future" (the past can safely be altered) or "Terra Nova" (alternate time streams). "Sanctuary" insists that nothing can be altered. That limits the possibilities, as Helen chases Adam Worth to 1898; the result is fairly drab.
