Mark Savela is no stranger to the Emmy awards. Over the course of his time as Visual Effects Supervisor with the Stargate franchise he has been nominated no less than 4 times in the category of Outstanding Visual Effects for a Series.

This year’s nomination for Stargate Universe’s Awakening is a bittersweet one however. The nomination will be Stargate’s last, following the show’s cancelation last year. Additionally, Mark is breaking new ground with Echoes, a new scifi pilot of his own.

In this interview Mark talks about what this particular Emmy nomination means to him personally, where Echoes stands in terms of production and how the uncomfortable changing landscape of TV might just be a good thing for viewers.

“It’s quite a big category this year,” observes Mark. “It’s very nice that we snuck in there with Game of Thrones and Boardwalk Empire and Walking Dead. They’re all the huge HBO and AMC shows, so it’s really nice to be in there with that group. It’s amazing.

“In other years, I never felt like we were true underdogs but this year I kind of feel that we are so we’ll see how it goes. It’s really nice for the franchise to end this way. It’s a cool way to go out...”

TV GUIDE: Doctor Who's Arthur Darvill: I Hope Rory Stops Dying

The constant threat of death may be part of a Doctor Who companion's job description, but for Rory Williams, it's not just a threat. He's died, or at least appeared to die, so many times in the series, he's been compared to South Park's Kenny.

"I think it's gotten a bit much for him, all the dying," Arthur Darvill, who plays Rory, told reporters on a call to promote Saturday's Doctor Who episode, airing at 9/8c on BBC America. "I kept seeing it as a running joke. A lot of times it happens because he puts himself in the way of danger for other people. He's a hero, he's a bumbling hero. I have no idea if it's going to keep happening. I personally hope that Rory just stops dying..."



... In "The Girl Who Waited," Rory had better stay alive: His wife Amy (Karen Gillan) and the Doctor (Matt Smith) will suddenly find themselves dependent on him to save the day. Amy becomes trapped in an eerie, white facility in another time stream. Although the Doctor can use the TARDIS to break in, he doesn't dare to enter because the facility quarantines victims of an alien plague that's fatal to the Doctor.

"The Doctor's left on the TARDIS. Rory's kind of sent off to go to help Amy on his own, which I think is quite a big responsibility for him," Darvill said. "He doesn't really want to put himself in danger, but as soon as it's anything to do with Amy being in danger, he'll just throw himself in straightaway..."

There won't be a dry eye in the house this Saturday night as Doctor Who airs one of its most complex, dark and emotional episodes to date. 'The Girl Who Waited' has been written by Tom MacRae, who previously contributed two-part adventure 'Rise of the Cybermen / The Age of Steel' to the show back in 2006.

We caught up with Tom, who is busy editing his new sitcom - Comedy Central's Threesome - to chat about 'The Girl Who Waited', Karen Gillan's "stellar" performance and the role that emotion and romance plays in Doctor Who...



... Q: There's a lot of buzz surrounding Karen Gillan's performance in 'The Girl Who Waited'...


Tom MacRae: It's absolutely amazing. Karen had a voice coach and a movement coach, so she was able to lower her voice quite a lot to play the older Amy. She had a little bit of padding which changes how she moves, but mostly it's her and she just worked really hard. We had quite a long discussion at the start as to whether we should cast an older actress or do Karen in a prosthetic. It came down to what was actually more believable, and obviously in terms of the budget, if you have two actresses, you're not having to make every shot with both of them in an effects shot.

"As we talked about it, Karen got wind of what the story was and she petitioned very, very strongly to do both. She really wanted it to happen, and you see that in her work on it. This isn't another episode where X meets Y meets Z. This [episode] is incredibly special for Amy and part of that is the way Karen did it. It wouldn't have been nearly as good if she hadn't pulled out such a stellar performance. Also, Nick Hurran - who is the most amazing director - not only knew how to support and help Karen, but then shot it in the most beautiful, beautiful way..."
