From "Space Balls" to "Independence Day" to his award-winning stage performance in "Goat," actor Bill Pullman has proven he can handle any role from super-silly to deadly serious. Most recently, he was in HBO's "Too Big to Fail" and has been cast as child killer Oswald Danes on Starz/BBC's "Torchwood," which begins Friday. The intriguing story line for the first episode, "Miracle Day," is about the day humans discover they can't die. You still get old and sick, but you can't die. Just another day at the office for the 58-year-old with leading-man good looks. He is married with three children -- the youngest just graduated from high school -- and spends time in Los Angeles and on his Montana ranch...
... Q: So what kind of field research do you do to play an unrepentant child killer who finds redemption through attention?
Bill Pullman: [Laughing] "For me it started with literature. One of the books that I thought was really seminal is this 1940s book by Dr. Hervey Cleckley called "Mask of Sanity." He is profiling different sociopathic and psychopathic behaviors. That was written in the 1940s. Then there are some books now about sexual predators and things like that. You come to some broad consensus about different patterns of behavior and that kind of thing. I observe people on YouTube videos who have been convicted of crimes or accused of crimes. So you start with that..."

‘Torchwood: Miracle Day,” a 10-episode sci-fi drama, kicks off with the attempted execution of child killer Oswald Danes by lethal injection. Danes — played by Bill Pullman — convulses, is almost thrown from the table as the drugs surge through him, and then ... nothing. Their effect suddenly wears off, and he’s as alive as he was when he awoke that morning.
So begins a ride that examines — amidst a Hollywood blockbuster-like spectacle of explosions, gunshots and hand-to-hand combat — what would happen to our planet if people stopped dying.
“It’s unexplained. We don’t know what’s going on or what the answer is,” says Mekhi Phifer, who plays CIA operative Rex Matheson. He meets what would have been a brutal end if it hadn’t been “Miracle Day.”
“That’s the difference between this and a 9/11, where everybody banded together. Here, we don’t know who the enemy is, and that’s what’s so scary...”

Day after day, people keep aging, they get hurt, they get sick, but they never die. The result is a population boom, overnight. With all of the extra people, resources are finite and, in four month’s time, the human race will cease to be viable. But, since this clearly can’t be a natural event, someone has got to be behind it, and CIA Agent Rex Matheson (Mekhi Phifer) begins to investigate a global conspiracy that leads him straight to an old, secret British institute, known as Torchwood. When Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) and Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles) get involved, Rex is drawn into a world of adventure, and a threat to change what it means to be human, forever.
During an exclusive interview with Collider, actress Eve Myles talked about how excited she was for the series to film in the States, the transition for Gwen in an American world, how much the journey of Torchwood has surprised her since she first signed on, how she’s enjoyed the new additions to the cast, and how Starz has allowed them to be bigger, braver and bolder, in every way...

MYLES: "With Mekhi and Bill, I’d grown up watching them. They’re Hollywood for me. They’re great American actors and film stars, and here I come, from a little small town called Ystradgynlais, in the South Wales valleys, and I’m mingling and working with these people, and they’re not at all intimidating. They’re friendly and warm and welcoming, and I couldn’t have wished for anything nicer. I really couldn’t. You hear so many horror stories, and I’ve been very blessed with these people. They’re awesome..."
