TV GUIDE: Exclusive: Fringe Producers on Peter and Olivia's First Meeting…and Their Future!

Feb 24, 2011
by Damian Holbrook

Fringe heads back to 1985 again this week (Friday, 9/8c, Fox) for more of the Bishop back story, and — if you've seen the promos — it turns out some of our heroes have known each other a lot longer than any of them realize. So we grabbed executive producers Jeff Pinkner and Joel Wyman for an exclusive, spoilery chat about the heartbreaking episode, what Peter and Olivia's fateful encounter 26 years in the past means for their future, and of course, alterna-babies...

... TV Guide Magazine: Now, you seem to be calling back to old episodes lately. Last week, you invoked the ambered bus from Season 1's "Ghost Network." This week, we get a lot of "White Tulip" references — as well as the back story on that burnt room in the video of young Olive.

Wyman: The "White Tulip" stuff is all connected thematically because that was the episode where Walter believes in God. And that is going to come back...it's a very big part of the season finale and where Walter is going to be.

Pinkner: We've always said that we plant seeds that grow and pay dividends in later seasons, so we'll plant seeds and leave it open to discovering how...

LA SHOW TRACKER: 'The Vampire Diaries': Candice Accola on Caroline's many boys and a 'very significant' episode

February 24, 2011

Let's be honest, “Vampire Diaries” fans: Naughty Katherine (Nina Dobrev) is a lot of fun, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) struggling with his humanity is providing for many meaty scenes and Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) is manning up in a way that's breathtaking. But the surprise superstar of the CW series' second season has been new vampire Caroline (Candice Accola). Whether Caroline is struggling with her feelings for ex-boyfriend Matt (Zach Roerig) and his friend Tyler (Michael Trevino) or struggling against tormenting werewolves, Accola has stepped up to the plate in a big way this year.

“I could not be happier about the opportunities the writers have given me this season,” she enthuses. “It's been challenging in all the best ways.”

Recently, Accola chatted with Show Tracker about some of those challenges, including that horrific torture scene — nobody puts Caroline in the cage! — getting to sing in tonight's episode, Tyler's betrayal and the chemistry between Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Caroline. She also teases that viewers are in store for “a very big episode” tonight, which will be the last new one until April. Like Caroline, we'll have to figure out a way to survive, Show Trackers...

... The first time we talked this season, I brought up the fact that you have a very musically talented cast. And now you're getting to sing in tonight's episode. What's the context for Caroline breaking into song?

Candice Accola: "I know, it is very random! [Laughs] I think that Caroline has come off such a dramatic shift. The entire season has been very supernaturally active for Caroline. I think what was such a beautiful moment at the end of that one episode was when Bonnie (Katerina Graham) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) came over to have a slumber party. Simple, truthful, honest, like necessary. It's a great reminder that these are young girls that really just need. At the end of the day, sometimes you really just need that sense of friendship and camaraderie and love in the simplest form, like a slumber party. So I think Tyler has been the center of what's been going on dramatically for Caroline in the past couple episodes, and now with him gone, I think it gives her an opportunity to try to feel human again and just to be silly again and have fun again and laugh again, and focus on her friendships and her relationships and her family. I think the whole idea of jumping up on stage and singing is just Caroline being Season 1 Caroline again..."

TOTAL SCIFI ONLINE: Daniel Mays and Amy Manson: “Carpathia represents a second chance...”

Posted on Thursday 24 February 2011

by Paul Simpson

In BBC One’s Outcasts, Daniel Mays plays Cass Cromwell, one of the members of the Protection and Security (PAS) force in Forthaven, the human settlement on Carpathia. As the series develops, he finds himself partnered with Amy Manson’s Fleur Morgan and they begin to question the whole basis of the regime...

... What attracted you to the role, and what did you think when you first read the scripts?

Amy Manson: Probably Fleur’s quick retorts, initially, and her playfulness with Cass. She does adhere to orders but at the same time she manages to have a laugh about it. Then obviously there was the grandness of the project as a whole.

Daniel: It was just a very interesting and fascinating concept to take on really. I thought the notion of starting again if Earth had come to this end was really interesting to get into, striving forward and making this new world – and preventing making the same mistakes again.

If we could make these characters as human and believable as possible, the thing could really come to life. It’s a risky thing to take on, but in life you’ve got to take risks...

Outcasts concludes on 27 February 2011 (BBC One).
