We talk to one of Britain’s finest actors about his role on Stargate Universe.
Interview: Robert CarlyleNow in his second year of playing Dr Nicholas Rush on Syfy’s Stargate Universe, we’re still finding it hard to believe that Robert Carlyle joined the show. Not because we think it’s bad, but because we never expected him to appear on a Stargate series. He has, however, proved to be the strongest card in a solid hand, as we discussed with him.
... What’s the most difficult thing about playing this character for you?
The technical difficulties would be the technical stuff that he has to say; when you’re talking about ‘wormholes’ and ‘solar flares’ and the time stuff, to me I don’t know what I am talking about – it’s like Shakespeare, trying to get that into my head. So that’s a wee bit difficult. But in terms of the acting, it’s very important to walk a particular line with Rush because you don’t want to completely alienate the audience and it’s very, very easy to do that with a character like Rush. They think, “Well, I don’t like this guy, and I don’t like at all what he is up to. It’s dishonest.” All of that. So he has to have good reasons for what he does, and I think that’s the strength in the character that Brad Wright and Robert Cooper have set in place, is that yes, maybe it’s a bit distasteful but he’s right. So that’s makes it okay.

Conan O'Brien Talks About His Crazy Year

You can gauge the major upheavals in Conan O'Brien's career by his facial hair.
A couple of years ago, when a writers strike brought production of Late Night to a standstill, the famously boyish-looking host emerged with a beard -- the first of his life -- that he said he grew out of solidarity with his staff. Then, in January, when his brief run on The Tonight Show ended after a notorious spat with NBC, during which he elected to leave the show rather than agreeing to move its time slot to make way for the return of Jay Leno, the first thing he did was to stop shaving.
He kept the beard as he set out on this summer's Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour, which showcased his musical skills and poked fun at his be-quiet-or-else contractual settlement with NBC. It's still there in promos for his new late-night show Conan, which comes to TBS beginning Nov. 8.
The question is, will it be around come showtime?
O'Brien answered this and many other questions during our 40-minute chat, which also reveals how he plans to address the situation with NBC, why he stayed in Los Angeles, and why he never watches late-night talk shows.
... You're known to revere the late-night talk show traditions of shows like Late Night and especially The Tonight Show. Are you looking to bring that to cable, or will Conan be something that's really out of that mold?
My analogy is when you come out with a new car that's radically different from any other car, it still has four wheels, a steering wheel and some kind of conventional seating. I think this show will still have the skeleton that a lot of these shows have and the way that I've been working since 1993, which is coming out and greeting the crowd, addressing them. You have to have guests. There's no way in the world that you can do a show for an hour [without guests], and that's often my favorite part of the show. That can be very unpredictable. ... The standard setup will be the same. That said, I'd like the show to reflect a lot of the things that are different now, and the fact that I'm on basic cable now. And I say that not in a bad way, but in a good way. I think there's a lot of ways that we can evolve into something else. One thing people often don't understand about these shows is that you don't unveil a finished product on the first night. My plan is to have a really good time, have a few memorable moments, and what I've told my writers is we're going to find this show by doing it. It's by the doing of the show and by being open to change and trying things that we're going to [get it right]. The Late Night show went through a long evolution. My whole career in late-night television has been an evolution, or devolution, or however you want to look at it. That's what has to happen here is yeah, there's got to be a lot of the skeleton or the blueprint of what these shows are, and then we see what we can do with this thing. Because mostly what I'd like to do with this show is surprise myself. I'd like to amuse myself. I'd like to a year from now realize, "Wow, we started here on Nov. 8, and look at how much things changed." That to me is a sign of a healthy show, especially in the beginning.

Warehouse 13 Holiday Details Shared at Syfy Digital Press Tour
Warehouse 13 Star, Allison Scagliotti had quite a bit to say about the episode and a bit more at the recent Syfy Digital Press Tour in Orlando, Florida.
Can you tease a little bit about what we're going to see in the holiday episode? Are we going to see the typical Christmas scenes?
Well, over at "Warehouse," everyone sort of has their plans for the holidays, and everyone's plans sort of get foiled. Pete and Myka plan on going home for the holidays, but Artie straps them with a case. There's a bad Santa terrorizing a businessman, a Mr. Potter, if you will. Yes, I just made a Frank Capra reference, and I'm 20.

Chew on that. And for Claudia, if you recall, she's an orphan. And her brother was lost to an interdimensional space for over a decade. So this is the first time she actually gets to have a family for the holidays. However, Artie is a bit of a Scrooge, so it's Claudia's project to bring him some holiday cheer, hell or high water. And that's where the idea comes from to find his father. And we have Judd Hirsch. Amazing. It was so much fun. Just to watch Judd and Saul Rubinek --

... Human Target is the most action-packed sequence TV series on Fox; what stunt work do you do yourself and what can we expect to see this season as far as fight sequences and explosions?
MV - Well, the explosions are a little bigger. The fight sequences aren’t quite as long as they were last season, but they’re much more intense. My stunt double, Jeff Robinson, seems like he’s improving faster than I am, so it’s really kind of throwing a challenge out there for me. We also have a shorthand working together. For example, we have an array of stunt people that come in under different guises and play bad guys, and we’re all sort of used to working together and working with our camera crew. That allows us to put things together a bit more quickly, so our fights might be a little bit faster and more intense.
That said, we owe an awful lot to Steve Boyum, our producer/director who is with us in Vancouver. There is a great deal of preparation that goes into finding a feasible or a cost effective way of producing these stunts, and it’s just amazing the way he does it. Steve previously worked as a stuntman as well as a cameraman. He’s been around for a while and we’re really profiting from his experience at being able to lay out these scenarios where we can work and play. In some ways we’re saving ourselves an awful lot of time from his experience and benefiting from that. So thanks to those assets, we’re just going to continue to make some pretty interesting stuff...
