the_devil_bat1

the_body_snatcher

06:30 PM The Body Snatcher (1945)

Zombie master Lugosi menaces newlyweds on Haitian sugar plantation; eerie, unique low-budget chiller. Fine, atmospheric tale from Robert Louis Stevenson's short story of doctor (Henry Daniell) who is forced to deal with scurrilous character (Boris Karloff) in order to get cadavers for experiments in 19th-century Edinburgh. Last film to team Karloff and Bela Lugosi, their scenes together are eerie and compelling.

Cast includes Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, Henry Daniell, Edith Atwater, Russell Wade, Rita Corday and Sharyn Moffett.

frankenstein2A

08:00 PM Frankenstein (1931)

A crazed scientist creates a living being from body parts, not realizing it has a madman's brain. Definitive monster movie, with Colin Clive as the ultimate mad scientist, creating a man-made being (Boris Karloff) but inadvertently giving him a criminal brain. It's creaky at times, and cries for a music score, but it's still impressive . . . as is Karloff's performance in the role that made him a star. Long-censored footage, restored in 1987, enhances the impact of several key scenes, including the drowning of a little girl. Based on Mary Shelley's novel.

Cast includes Colin Clive, Mae Clarke, John Boles, Boris Karloff, Edward Van Sloan, Frederick Kerr, Dwight Frye, Lionel Belmore and Marilyn Harris.

son_of_frankenstein

09:30 PM Son Of Frankenstein (1939)

The legendary scientist's son is tempted to resume his father's horrible experiments. Third in the series (after BRIDE) finds late doctor's son attempting to clear family name by making the Monster "good." He should live so long. Lavishly made shocker is gripping and eerie, if a bit talky, with wonderfully bizarre sets by Jack Otterson and Bela Lugosi's finest performance as evil, broken-necked blacksmith Ygor. Boris Karloff's last appearance as the Monster. Look fast for Ward Bond(!) as a constable guarding Castle Frankenstein from angry villagers late in film.

Cast includes Basil Rathbone, Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, Lionel Atwill, Josephine Hutchinson, Donnie Dunagan, Emma Dunn and Edgar Norton.

the_wolf_man1

11:15 PM The Wolf Man (1941)

A British nobleman undergoes a startling transformation when he's bitten by a gypsy werewolf. One of the finest horror films ever made: Larry Talbot (Lon Chaney, Jr.) is bitten by werewolf Bela Lugosi, survives to carry the curse himself. Outstanding cast includes Claude Rains as Chaney's oblivious father, Evelyn Ankers as perplexed girl friend, Maria Ouspenskaya as wizened gypsy woman who foretells his fate and attempts to care for him. Literate and very engrossing, with superb makeup by Jack Pierce, atmospheric music (re-used in many other Universal chillers) by Charles Previn and Hans J. Salter. Written by Curt Siodmak.

Cast includes Lon Chaney Jr., Claude Rains, Ralph Bellamy, Warren William, Patric Knowles, Bela Lugosi, Maria Ouspenskaya, Evelyn Ankers, Fay Helm, J.M. Kerrigan and Forrester Harvey.

the_mummy2A

12:30 AM The Mummy (1932)

An Egyptian mummy returns to life to stalk the reincarnation of his lost love. Horror classic stars Boris Karloff as Egyptian mummy, revived after thousands of years, believing Zita Johann is reincarnation of ancient mate. Remarkable makeup and atmosphere make it chills ahead of many follow-ups.

Cast includes Boris Karloff, Zita Johann, David Manners, Arthur Byron, Edward Van Sloan, Bramwell Fletcher, Noble Johnson, Kathryn Byron, Leonard Mudie and James Crane.

mummys_hand1

02:00 AM The Mummy's Hand (1940)

island_of_lost_souls

03:15 AM Island of Lost Souls (1933)

On a remote island, a mad scientist turns wild animals into human monsters. Strong adaptation of H. G. Wells' novel of a mad scientist isolated on a remote island, where he transforms jungle beasts into half-human abominations (". . . are we not men?"). Charles Laughton hams it up a bit, but despite more explicit horror films of late, this retains its frightening aura, particularly in the grisly finale.

Cast includes Charles Laughton, Richard Arlen, Leila Hyams, Bela Lugosi, Kathleen Burke, Arthur Hohl, Stanley Fields, Paul Hurst, Hans Steinke, Tetsu Komai and George Irving.

invisible_man1

04:30 AM The Invisible Man (1933)

A scientist's experiments with invisibility turn him into a madman. H. G. Wells' fantasy brilliantly materializes on screen in tale of mad scientist who makes himself invisible, wreaking havoc on British country village. Claude Rains' starring debut is dated but still enjoyable. Look fast for John Carradine phoning in a "sighting"; that's Walter Brennan whose bicycle is stolen.

Cast includes Claude Rains, Gloria Stuart, William Harrigan, Henry Travers, Una O'Connor, Forrester Harvey, Holmes Herbert, E.E. Clive, Dudley Digges, Harry Stubbs, Donald Stuart and Merle Tottenham.
