SCIFI AND TV TALK: Warehouse 13's Aaron Ashmore - The Comeback Kid

As an agent for the U.S Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Warehouse 13’s Steve Jinks thought he had pretty much seen it all when it came to walking into dangerous situations. That, however, was before he was recruited as a Warehouse agent and began helping with the sometimes life-and-death task of tracking down, bagging and tagging Artifacts.

Introduced in the season three opener The New Guy, Steve, or “Jinksy” as fellow agent Claudia Donovan sometimes calls him, almost died as a result of an Artifact exerting its influence on him. In the season’s penultimate story, Emily Lake, the Warehouse agent was, in fact, killed in cold blood while on an undercover mission. Luckily for him, Claudia used Johann Maelzel’s metronome to bring him back to life in season four’s An Evil Within.

For actor Aaron Ashmore, who plays Steve, it was business as usual when his character returned from the dead, but not surprisingly it took Steve a bit of time to adjust to life once again among the living...

... “It felt very comfortable stepping back into the Steve role because it hadn’t been that long of a [filming] break,” says Ashmore, sitting down for a chat in Warehouse 13‘s Toronto studios after finishing work for the day on the fourth season episode Endless Wonder. “However, I think the difference and the difficulty for my character is that all these huge things had happened. The Warehouse went ‘kaboom,’ which Artie [Saul Rubinek] fixes, then Claudia [Allison Scagliotti] brings Steve back to life, and he finds out that he’s being kept alive by an Artifact."

I mean, it can’t be easy knowing you were dead and now you’re up and about again strictly because of an Artifact. And the thing is, at the start of this season, we don’t know much about this Artifact and the potential consequences of using it to bring someone back to life. So for me, the biggest [acting] challenge was not playing Steve, but playing Steve who is also carrying around all that weight and knowledge. It’s not like, OK, here’s the cliffhanger season finale and then a few months later you’re back in the story. There’s this big thing that he’s got to deal with as well as process, and at the same time try to fit back in with everyone and fit back into life in general..."

Warehouse 13 airs Monday at 9/8C on Syfy.
