What an odd career Kenneth Branagh has carved out for himself in middle age. By bright Hollywood day he directs blockbuster action movies (Thor, the forthcoming reboot of the Jack Ryan franchise), while by icy Scandinavian night he portrays haunted Swedish cop Kurt Wallander. In this latest grimly lit adventure — the first of three — our hero investigates the death of a woman whose severed arm is found on a beach. Alas, Wallander's attempts to avoid bringing his work home with him are kiboshed by the discovery of another dead woman in the garden of his newly bought house. The result is satisfyingly twist-filled and chilling in every sense. Or, as they say in Swedish kitchens, "Da Wallander is okee-dokee bork-bork- bork!"
