TCM PRIMETIME - WHAT'S ON TONIGHT: THE MAGIC OF MOVIE MAKING
08:00 PM Forbidden Planet (1956) * Awesome Movie *
In the year 2257, a distant star has three inhabitants. Professor Morbius, his bewitching daughter, and Robby the Robot. When a space cruiser from Earth lands on the planet, the story develops into an adventure fantasy with elements of romance.
Cast includes Walter Pidgeon, Anne Francis, Leslie Nielsen, Warren Stevens, Maverick's Jack Kelly, Richard Anderson, Earl Holliman, Robby the Robot and The Virginian's James Drury.
10:00 PM Gunga Din (1939)
Classic about three British soldiers seeking treasure during an uprising in 19th-century India. The Hollywood action-adventure yarn, vaguely based on Rudyard Kipling's famous poem, about three soldier-comrades in 19th-century India battling the savage thuggee cult when they aren't busy carousing and getting into trouble. Water boy Sam Jaffe saves the day in rousing climax.
Cast includes Cary Grant, Victor McLaglen, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Sam Jaffe, Eduardo Ciannelli, Joan Fontaine, Montagu Love, Robert Coote, Abner Biberman and Lumsden Hare.
12:15 AM The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) * Excellent Movie *
The bandit king (Errol Flynn) of Sherwood Forest leads his Merry Men in a battle against the corrupt Prince John (Claude Rains). Brilliant version of the classic tale about the outlaw hero of Sherwood Forest. Dashing Flynn in the definitive swashbuckler, winning hand of Olivia de Havilland (never lovelier as Maid Marian), foiling evil prince Rains, dueling wicked Basil Rathbone. Erich Wolfgang Korngold's outstanding score earned an Oscar, as did the art direction and editing. Scripted by Norman Reilly Raine and Seton I. Miller. Arguably Flynn's greatest role.
Cast includes Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland, Basil Rathbone, Claude Rains, Patric Knowles, Eugene Pallette, Alan Hale, Melville Cooper, Ian Hunter, Una O'Connor, Herbert Mundin and Montagu Love.
02:15 AM Citizen Kane (1941)
The investigation of a publishing tycoon's dying words reveals conflicting stories about his scandalous life. Orson Welles was 25 when he co-wrote, produced, directed and starred in this portrait of a newspaper tycoon and his effect on the people in his orbit.
Cast includes Orson Welles, Joseph Cotten, Dorothy Comingore, Agnes Moorehead, Ruth Warrick, Ray Collins, Erskine Sanford, Everett Sloane, William Alland, Paul Stewart, George Coulouris, Fortunio Bonanova and Philip Van Zandt.
04:30 AM The Magnificent Ambersons (1942)
Orson Welles' version of the Booth Tarkington novel about fading Indianapolis gentry, circa 1900. A possessive son's efforts to keep his mother from remarrying threaten to destroy his family.
Cast includes Joseph Cotten, Dolores Costello, Anne Baxter, Tim Holt, Agnes Moorehead, Ray Collins, Erskine Sanford and Richard Bennett.
