... This isn’t the type of drama you’d expect on BBC1 is it? Is that what attracted you to do a big budget sci-fi series like Outcasts?

HN: "Yes completely. It’s an incredibly bold thing to set something in 2060 on a different planet and all of the questions that throws up. That inspired me to do it."

Tell us about Stella Isen?

HN: "She’s a scientist and head of security in Forthaven which is the community the human settlers have been building on planet Carpathia. They all arrived as pioneers and a structure of society had to be created, and President Tate, who was also a scientist, appointed people like Stella. In the first episode it’s explored what people have left behind. Stella was sent out on a transporter from Earth with the guarantee that her husband and daughter would be on the next transporter spaceship out to the planet. When it cuts to Carpathia in 2060, the waited-for transporter hasn’t arrived 10 years later, so she’s in this state of yearning for her husband and her child..."

"Outcasts" premieres on BBC1 at 9pm on February 7, and will also air in the US on BBC America [premiere date pending].
