THE DEADBOLT: Vampire Style with Sam Witwer of Being Human

by Troy Rogers

Now that Being Human is in full supernatural swing on Syfy, fans have been introduced to Sam Witwer as Aidan, a vampire from the Revolutionary War who works as a nurse at a Boston hospital. Although Aidan struggles to find his place in the real world as a vampire, life is even more complex for the character of Sam Witwer who shares a house with a werewolf named Josh (Sam Huntington) and a ghost (Meaghan Rath) named Sally.

After Aidan got involved in a co-dependent relationship with a girl aiming to reject the vampire lifestyle in the Being Human episode, "Wouldn't It Be Nice (If We Were Human)," Sam Witwer's character is called to help with a homeless man in triage in the February 14 episode called "The End of The World As We Know It" in which Aidan learns the identity of the person who turned him into a vampire.

[Being Human] Ahead of the Valentine's Day episode of Being Human, TheDeadbolt spoke with actor Sam Witwer about how Aidan fits in with other vampire characters, the origins of his American name as compared to the British TV series, and how Witwer's character is able to survive in daylight in relation to bloodsuckers of the past who were more nocturnal in nature...

... THE DEADBOLT: How do you feel Aidan stacks up against the other vampires on TV and in film right now?

SAM WITWER: Oh, you’re going to be very disappointed in me, sir. I have not seen the other vampires. I don’t know what they’re doing. I haven’t seen any of the shows. I haven’t seen the Twilight series. In fact, someone said, “Hey, do you guys sparkle?” And I’m like, “What? What do you mean? Do we break into dance numbers and do jazz hands?” They’re like, “No, like the vampires in Twilight.” And I’m like, “I don’t k now what that is...”

Being Human airs Monday nights at 9pm on Syfy
