SHOW PATROL: Brian J. Smith on the end of 'Stargate Universe'

Brian J. Smith seems fairly pragmatic about the end of “Stargate Universe,” the Syfy series in which he has starred for two seasons.

“It definitely hurts to have shows you like get cancelled—and it really sucks when it’s a show you’re working on,” he said last week on the phone from New York City. “But there is nowhere else that you can get 40 episodes of 'SGU,' or [a show like] 'Caprica' on, other than a boutique-type, specialized, genre-based network.”



Syfy begins airing the final 10 episodes of the controversial series at 9 p.m. March 7 with “Deliverance,” an action-packed hour that picks up where the series left off in December. The Destiny crew stares down an army of drone ships programmed to destroy anything in its path. Smith’s character, Lt. Matthew Scott, faces a tough decision when he suspects his girlfriend, Chloe Armstrong (Elyse Levesque), may have sabotaged the ship. (WATCH a preview by clicking the "SGU videos" link at left.)

"I love the episode,” Smith said. “I think it has a lot of [stuff] in it that the fans will enjoy. More space battles—it starts with one and pretty much ends with one, too...”

When last we left the crew of the Destiny in Syfy's Stargate Universe three months ago, things looked positively bleak. In the midseason finale, "Resurgence," the crew had been duped by the Ursini (those seed ship aliens) and the Destiny was trapped in the middle of a battle with hostile drones that were bent on annihilating the ship.

Stargate Universe returns with an explosive midseason premiere called "Deliverance" tonight at 10 p.m., which will kick off the final 10 episodes of the series. "I'm pretty happy with the whole back 10," said co-creator and executive producer Brad Wright. "I think we come back from the break very, very strong, with some really, really moving episodes and actually some big action stuff. 'Deliverance,' which is the second part of the two-parter, has a ton of action in it..."

Reruns continue to dominate the schedule, but there's a couple of bright spots, including the midseason returns of The Event and Stargate Universe. Meanwhile, on Fringe, thieves defy gravity as Walter digs into the damage he's done.

As the series returns, Chloe tries to get help from a surprising source in an effort to buy the Destiny more time, and Brody and Volker attempt to repair the ship's shields.
