TURNER CLASSIC MOVIES CHANNEL VIDEO FEATURETTE: Drive-In Double Features! Thursday Nights in June 2011

Drive-In Double Features - Thursdays in June

It came from the drive-in! The al fresco movie theater, a rage of the 1950s and '60s, spawned a new type of film -- the creature feature aimed at Atomic Age teenagers. These youngsters found their own parked car a perfect place to fall into each other's arms while being scared silly by B-movie monsters, often representing the anxieties of the age, such as threats of nuclear war or science fun amok. What could be more nostalgic, or more fun, than reliving those warm summer nights of dreamy dates and dread-inducing double features?

TCM presents a summertime festival spotlighting some of the most sensational monsters to have graced those drive-in movie screens that once dotted the American landscape. No less than 15 of the films are TCM premieres, including four examples of the Golden Age of Japanese movie monsters. Godzilla, King of the Monsters (1956) is the Americanized version of the 1954 Japanese film Gijira, introducing the giant monster to U.S. audiences with re-dubbing and inserted scenes featuring Raymond Burr as a reporter who helps fight the menace. Also screening: Rodan (1957), Ghidorah: The Three-Headed Monster (1965) and Godzilla vs. Monster Zero (1970).

Other campy creatures making their TCM debuts include Tarantula (1955), a spider that grows to the size of large buildings; The Cyclops (1957), a one-eyed terror who's 25 feet tall; The Giant Behemoth (1959), a once-dormant dinosaur that rises from a polluted ocean emitting deadly radiation; and The Phantom from 10,000 Leagues (1955), another radioactive monster from the deep.

On the distaff side, we have Susan Cabot as The Wasp Woman (1959); Attack of the 50 Foot Woman (1958), starring Allison Hayes; and Queen of Outer Space (1958) which includes the great Zsa Zsa Gabor!

Airing Thursday, June 16, 2011:

8:00 PM Attack of the 50 Foot Woman (1958)

A harridan with a philandering husband has an alien encounter and grows to mammoth proportions, seeks revenge on hubby. Hilariously awful sci-fi with some of the funniest special effects of all time. Remade for TV in 1993 with Daryl Hannah.

Dir: Nathan Hertz Cast: Allison Hayes, William Hudson, Yvette Vickers.

9:30 PM Village of the Giants (1965)

Delinquent teens ingest a substance and grow to 30 feet tall, then proceed to take over a small town.

Dir: Bert I. Gordon Cast: Tommy Kirk, Johnny Crawford, Beau Bridges.

11:00 PM Queen of Outer Space (1958)

Manned rocket ship from Earth is abducted to Venus, where the planet is ruled entirely by women. Silly, to say the least, but at least some of the laughs were intentional. Zsa Zsa, incidentally, does not play the title character!

Dir: Edward Bernds Cast: Zsa Zsa Gabor, Eric Fleming, Lisa Davis.

12:30 AM Mars Needs Women (1968)

Mars invades the Earth in a search for female companionship.

Dir: Larry Buchanan Cast: Tommy Kirk, Byron Lord, Yvonne Craig.

2:00 AM Cyclops (1957)

Expedition scours Mexico in search of Talbott's lost fiance, discovers that radiation has transformed him into an enormous monster. Nothing much in this cheapie.

Dir: Bert I. Gordon Cast: James Craig, Gloria Talbott, Lon Chaney [Jr.].

3:30 AM The Manster (1962)

A mad scientist turns a reporter into a two-headed killer.

Dir: George P. Breakston Cast: Peter Dyneley, Jane Hylton, Satoshi Nakamura.

4:45 AM The Killer Shrews (1959)

No, this isn't about an attack of nagging wives, it's an inventive but silly sci-fi tale of people isolated on a Texas island, menaced by title creatures created by well-intentioned scientist.

Dir: Ray Kellogg Cast: James Best, Ingrid Goude, Ken Curtis.

The most legendary Barbarian of all time is back this Summer. ... Falling Skies

(Sunday, 9/8c, TNT)

This crackerjack alien-invasion thriller, launching with a two-hour premiere, is perfect summer sci-fi escapism, the sort of show V should have been. It thrusts us directly into the trenches of a war between marauding aliens (who don't even try to mask their spidery selves) and a band of underdog human resistance fighters, led by a very appealing Noah Wyle as a family man/history professor who appreciates the significance of leading this charge on the same Massachusetts soil where an earlier Revolutionary War occurred. If this well-produced piece of popcorn populism isn't a hit, I give up.

FALLING SKIES - MOTHER NATURE NETWORK: Noah Wyle bans bottled water, fights aliens

He stars in sci-fi series 'Falling Skies' with Moon Bloodgood.

"We've always been pretty eco-friendly and aware, and we try to leave as small a footprint as possible, but my kids are much more diligent — they teach me about it," says Noah Wyle, the father of three sons. "We always recycle. I made one gigantic mandate, which is that we are not ever drinking bottled water again. We have Brita filters in the fridge." He also lives on a farm with cows, chickens, goats, pigs, horses, dogs and cats, some of which are rescues. "When you're named Noah you have a certain responsibility," points out the actor, who stars in the new TNT series "Falling Skies," about survival and resistance in the aftermath of an alien invasion. In the Steven Spielberg-produced sci-fi drama, premiering with a two-hour episode June 19, Wyle plays a college history professor turned resistance leader — and action hero...

FALLING SKIES -DAEMON'S TV: Exclusive: FALLING SKIES’ Colin Cunningham Interview

As fascinated as most of us are with aliens and alien invasions, shows revolving around them have had a bumpy history, something TNT is hoping to change with its highly anticipated epic summer series FALLING SKIES. Premiering June 19, the action-packed character drama follows a group of alien Armageddon survivors in Massachusetts who band together to fight back against the alien invaders.

Professor Tom Mason (Noah Wyle) is the de facto leader with two of his sons backing him up and the third in the clutches of the aliens. Dr. Anne Glass (Moon Bloodgood) is Tom’s confidant while John Pope (Colin Cunningham) is the leader of gang of marauders who likes killing aliens as much as he likes seizing any opportunities to profit from the chaos.

Daemon’s TV talked to Colin Cunningham about playing John Pope, what we can expect from Falling Skies and its aliens, and why we’re all going to love the show...

... It’s interesting that ‘Falling Skies’ is not so much about aliens invading as it is about the war since it begins six months after the initial attack.

Colin Cunningham: "It really is. It’s nice. I mean, hopefully audiences will respond to that very thing, but it’s not typical in that. The nice thing, bringing it back around to [Steven] Spielberg is that his projects are always about people and circumstances that are tough. Within this genre just happens to be an alien thing, but it’s not like it’s all visual FX or that there’s no heart or story. It’s real people and families trying to make the right decisions and do the right thing, and yet, you’re in the middle of war and it’s tough. It’s six months after, I guess, the end of the world. Ninety odd percent of humanity is gone and the survivors have begun to pull themselves out of the rubble and begin to come together and form a small militia and begin fighting back..."

FALLING SKIES - PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER: Noah Wyle's back, fighting alien invaders

by Ellen Gray
June 15, 2011

FALLING SKIES premieres 9 p.m. Sunday, June 19, 2011 on TNT.
Moves to 10 p.m. June 26.

WHEN STEVEN Spielberg's aliens launch their latest attack on Earth Sunday in TNT's "Falling Skies," Noah Wyle will be there to meet them.

Not as John Carter, the fresh-faced young medical student we first saw 17 years ago in "ER," but as Tom Mason, a widowed history professor who finds himself second in command of the 2nd Massachusetts, fighting the invaders and struggling to recover his captured middle son.

Time flies when you're on TV, but for Wyle, two days shy of his 40th birthday when he visited Philadelphia earlier this month, it might feel like warp speed...

... He's also given a little thought to Hollywood's fascination with alien invasion.

"Whenever you introduce an exterior threat to the planet, it's really the only chance you have to unify all the humans on the planet, let them transcend prejudices and petty differences."

Plus, there's "this idea of the reset button being hit on civilization," he said. "The Gospels, the Bill of Rights, the Constitution - whatever the template for the new civilization's going to be, these guys are going to be the ones framing it," he said. "So what do you keep and what do you discard? What was good and what was bad? I thought it was a really interesting theme."

And though the enemy one character calls "cooties" might look familiar, Wyle promises surprises. At one point, "we as characters have to radically redefine our assumptions about what's been happening all along because we misread it completely. And it's pretty cool."
