CINEMA SPY: 'Stargate Universe' Delivers Action and Humor in Season 2.5 Premiere
Deliverance' is old school space opera with an 'SGU' flavor
By Michael Simspon
Monday, March 7, 2011
Stargate Universe makes it's bittersweet return to Syfy in the US and SPACE Channel in Canada this week and it comes back with a bang. Several bangs in fact.
Like 'Space,' the corresponding episode at the start of Season 1.5, 'Deliverance' dispenses with much of the re-envisioning that has separated SGU from its predecessors in the franchise. Instead, it delivers in abundance that most populist expression of the space opera genre: the space battle. It's not Stargate Universe at its best, but it's an entertaining hour that marks a welcome return for one of the best sci-fi shows on television.
When we last saw Destiny and her de facto crew a few weeks before Christmas they were overwhelmed by hostile alien drones with failing shields and nowhere to run. At the end of that episode, 'Resurgence,' the fate of the ship and the show were unclear.
'Deliverance' picks up right where that cliffhanger left off...
Stargate Universe season 2.5 premieres on Syfy on Monday,March 7, at 10/9c and returns to SPACE on Tuesday, March 8, at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

REUTERS NEWS: Nathan Fillion is king of "Castle"
By Jenelle Riley
Sun Mar 6, 2011
LOS ANGELES (Back Stage) - Nathan Fillion expertly walks the fine line between obnoxious and charming, on screen that is.
He has flawlessly embodied confident characters you love despite (or maybe because of) their brash confidence. Think "Firefly" leader Malcolm Reynolds, "Dr. Horrible" hero Captain Hammer, or his current incarnation as self-assured mystery writer Richard Castle on ABC's hit "Castle.
In real life, Fillion is decidedly more easygoing. Perhaps it's a Canadian thing; Fillion was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta, the son of teachers who, as a child, he can remember adults approaching on the street to thank for changing their lives. Those parents, he says, helped instill in him a sense of gratitude and appreciation.
Of his prolific career, he says, "I think I've been really good at surrounding myself with really talented people. I've picked the right coattails to ride on."
Despite having won countless numbers of dedicated fans from his time on such cult series as "Firefly" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," not to mention starring on hit shows like "Desperate Housewives," he maintains, "I don't expect anybody to know who I am..."
... BACK STAGE: WAS THE JOB ON "CASTLE" AN OFFER?
Fillion: I had a holding deal and a stack of scripts to look at. I was going through them all and I remember reading it, I was 15 pages in, and I turned to my girlfriend and said, "I'm going to read this out loud to you. You tell me if you don't think this would be a ball to play." We laughed and laughed and read our way through the script. I was working on "Desperate Housewives" at the time but only for the year. And the "Castle" producers were kind enough to come to my trailer for a meeting. I told them, "Stop looking. I'm your guy. I can do this, I know just what to do." Which I've never done!
MANIA - TV WASTELAND: The beginning of the end for SGU
Syfy begins the burn-off this week.
By Rob Vaux
March 06, 2011
Stargate Universe kicks off the final 10 episodes of its run this week, another casualty of a brutal season for genre shows. This particular example illustrates some of the potential causes. One could argue that SGU simply had too much baggage from the franchise to carry: it couldn’t break away from the old formula like it promised, or conversely, it did so at the cost of alienating longtime Stargate fans. The dilemma faces every new show that comes on: provide a reliable formula or go for broke with something truly original? Frankly, speaking, we need a lot more of the latter. When it works, it works big; witness Lost or (on a far more modest scale) Warehouse 13. On the other hand, one of the best shows of the last decade – Battlestar Galactica – was a remake, which suggests that quality is where you find it.
More pertinent than originality, or even just putting out a decent hour’s worth of entertainment, is television’s inability to let shows find their audience. With the sheer number of channels out there, and the need to fill so much air time so often, one might expect a little more leeway. Some of TV’s biggest hits – including Seinfeld and Family Guy, to name just two –took their time getting rolling, and the latter case benefited immeasurably from DVDs and other new sources of access. But despite those tools, the network execs appear to have the patience of a sugar-addled four-year-old: if it ain’t a hit out the gate, it gets yanked before the actors’ checks clear.
Nor is this a new phenomenon. The number of truly great shows pulled before their time stretches back into antiquity: Max Headroom, Sports Night, Police Squad! Crime Story, Firefly (not a personal favorite, but the fans would hunt me down if I neglected to mention it), Arrested Development, The Ben Stiller Show… and a little thing called Star Trek which no one at NBC really believed in. What could any of these have done with a little more breathing room from the front office? Take a look at where their creators and stars went afterwards, and you’ll see the talent that television let go to waste. SGU is heading down the tubes just as it hits its stride, another casualty in a long list. At least it will be in some very good company.
You can watch the final episodes beginning this Monday at 10:00 PM EST on Syfy.

9-11PM NBC
There are many things wrong with this sci-fi allegory about a war between humans and aliens. For one, there's too much allegory and not enough sci-fi. It's also lacking characters as fascinating as, say, Locke, Ben, or even the polar bear. But it does boast a clutch of terrific actors: Hal Holbrook, Clifton Collins Jr., Željko Ivanek, and now, Virginia Madsen. The Sideways star plays an Alaskan senator who threatens to spill the beans on MSNBC about a secret prison. Nice cross-promotion! B-
