CLASSIC ADVENTURE MOVIE MARATHON - TCM: SCHEDULE MONDAY, JULY 9, 2012
09:00 AM Kidnapped (1948)
After being kidnapped and sold into slavery, a young man fights to reclaim his birthright. A young Scot (Roddy McDowall) fights his way across country to confront a wicked uncle.
Cast includes Roddy McDowall, Sue England, Dan O'Herlihy, Roland Winters, Jeff Corey, Houseley Stevenson, Erskine Sanford and Alex Frazer.
10:30 AM The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe (1954)
Colorful, entertaining adaptation of Daniel Defoe's classic story about a resourceful shipwreck victim, with some distinctive Bunuel touches; vivid performance by Dan O'Herlihy as the shipwrecked sailor.
Cast includes Dan O'Herlihy, Jaime Fernández, Felipe de Alba, Chel López, José Chávez and Emilio Garibay.
12:00 PM The Corsican Brothers (1941)
Entertaining swashbuckler from the Alexandre Dumas story of siamese twins who are separated, but remain spiritually tied. Douglas Fairbanks Jr. excellent in the dual lead, with strong support, ingenious photographic effects.
Cast includes Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Ruth Warrick, Akim Tamiroff, J. Carrol Naish, H.B. Warner, John Emery, Henry Wilcoxon, Gloria Holden, Walter Kingsford and Nana Bryant.
02:00 PM The Count of Monte Cristo (1934)
Superb filmization of classic story of Edmond Dantes, who spends years in prison unjustly but escapes to seek revenge on enemies who framed him. Robert Donat leads excellent cast in rousing classic from Alexandre Dumas' story
Cast includes Robert Donat, Elissa Landi, Louis Calhern, Sidney Blackmer, Raymond Walburn, O.P. Heggie, Irene Hervey, Georgia Caine, Walter Walker and Lawrence Grant.
04:00 PM King Richard and the Crusaders (1954)
King Richard's (George Sanders) attempts to win back the Holy Lands are complicated by his love of a tempestuous Englishwoman (Virginia Mayo).
Cast includes Rex Harrison, Virginia Mayo, George Sanders, Laurence Harvey, Robert Douglas, Michael Pate, Paula Raymond, Lester Matthews, Anthony Eustrel, Henry Corden and Wilton Graff.
06:00 PM Scaramouche (1952)
Excellent cast in rousing adaptation of the Rafael Sabatini novel of illustrious ne'er-do-well who sets out to avenge friend's death, set in 18th-century France. Impeccably done. Highlight is climactic sword duel--the longest in swashbuckling history. Eleanor Parker and Stewart Granger lend flair to this swashbuckler of romance and derring-do.
Cast includes Stewart Granger, Eleanor Parker, Janet Leigh, Mel Ferrer, Henry Wilcoxon, Nina Foch, Richard Anderson, Robert Coote and Lewis Stone.
08:00 PM The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) * Excellent movie *
The bandit king (Errol Flynn) of Sherwood Forest leads his Merry Men in a battle against the corrupt Prince John (Claude Rains). Brilliant version of the classic tale about the outlaw hero of Sherwood Forest. Dashing Flynn in the definitive swashbuckler, winning hand of Olivia de Havilland (never lovelier as Maid Marian), foiling evil prince Rains, dueling wicked Basil Rathbone. Erich Wolfgang Korngold's outstanding score earned an Oscar, as did the art direction and editing. Scripted by Norman Reilly Raine and Seton I. Miller. Arguably Flynn's greatest role.
Cast includes Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland, Basil Rathbone, Claude Rains, Patric Knowles, Eugene Pallette, Alan Hale, Melville Cooper, Ian Hunter, Una O'Connor, Herbert Mundin and Montagu Love.
10:00 PM The Three Musketeers (1948)
Athletic adaptation of Alexandre Dumas' classic adventure about the king's musketeers and their mission to protect France.
Cast includes Lana Turner, Gene Kelly, June Allyson, Van Heflin, Angela Lansbury, Frank Morgan, Vincent Price, Keenan Wynn, John Sutton, Gig Young, Robert Coote, Reginald Owen, Ian Keith, Patricia Medina and Richard Wyler.
12:15 AM Knights Of The Round Table (1953)
MGM's first wide- screen film (made in England) was excuse for this pretty but empty mini-spectacle of King Arthur's Court, revealing famous love triangle. Queen Guinevere (Ava Gardner) is torn between love for her husband (Mel Ferrer) and Sir Lancelot (Robert Taylor).
Cast includes Robert Taylor, Ava Gardner, Mel Ferrer, Anne Crawford, Stanley Baker, Felix Aylmer, Maureen Swanson, Gabriel Woolf, Anthony Forwood, Robert Urquhart, Niall MacGinnis, Ann Hanslip, Jill Clifford and Stephen Vercoe.
02:15 AM Ivanhoe (1952)
Sir Walter Scott's classic tale of the noble knight (Robert Taylor) torn between his fair lady (Joan Fontaine) and a beautiful Jew (Elizabeth Taylor). Almost a classic spectacular, marred by draggy scripting of Walter Scott's epic of England in Middle Ages, in days of chivalrous knights; beautifully photographed on location in Great Britain.
Cast includes Robert Taylor, Elizabeth Taylor, Joan Fontaine, George Sanders, Emlyn Williams, Robert Douglas, Finlay Currie, Felix Aylmer, Francis De Wolff, Norman Wooland, Basil Sydney and Sebastian Cabot.
04:15 AM The Prisoner Of Zenda (1952)
An Englishman (Stewart Granger) who resembles the king of a small European nation gets mixed up in palace intrigue when his look-alike is kidnapped. Plush but uninspired remake of the Anthony Hope novel, chronicling the swashbuckling adventures of Granger, a dead ringer for a small European country's king.
Cast includes Stewart Granger, Deborah Kerr, Louis Calhern, Jane Greer, Lewis Stone, Robert Douglas, Robert Coote, Peter Brocco, Francis Pierlot and James Mason.

01:15 PM The Blob (1958)
Endearingly campy classic of cheap '50s sci-fi has Steven McQueen (in his first starring role) leading teenagers into battle to save their small town from being swallowed up by giant glop of cherry Jell-O from outer space. Not really all that good, but how can you hate a film like this? (Especially when Burt Bacharach composed the title song.)
Cast includes Steve McQueen, Aneta Corsaut, Earl Rowe, Olin Howland, Stephen Chase, John Benson and George Karas.
02:45 PM It Came From Beneath the Sea (1955)
Breathtaking special effects highlight this sci-fi thriller. Huge octopus emerges from Pacific Ocean and wreaks havoc on San Francisco. First film made by the team of Ray Harryhausen and producer Charles H. Schneer.

Danny Bonaduce and Barry Williams fighting a bad-CGI Sasquatch isn't exactly what we refer to when we say "the new golden age of television," although if you squint hard enough, you might be able to get some fun out of pretending this is actually a Brady Bunch/Partridge Family/Harry and the Hendersons cross-over episode. I know I did.

BOSTON HERALD: Syfy stomps out more schlock with ‘Bigfoot’
By Mark A. Perigard
Saturday, June 30, 2012
If you see just one stupid movie on Syfy this year ... you’re obviously not watching the channel.
Just about all its original productions are schlock, and “Bigfoot” is the example that proves the rule.
The cable network last year scored a hit with “Mega Python vs. Gatoroid,” a film best remembered for the scene in which its stars, ’80s singers Tiffany and Debbie Gibson, brawled at a lawn party.
Hoping to cash in again on a twisted sense of nostalgia, Syfy pits ’70s teen idols Danny Bonaduce of “The Partridge Family” and Barry Williams of “The Brady Bunch” in a race to snare Bigfoot...
Syfy: Always Imagining Grosser.

TV GUIDE: Weekend Review: Weeds, Episodes, Endeavour
Jun 29, 2012
by Matt Roush
... AN ORIGIN STORY: Think of Endeavour (airing Sunday on PBS' Masterpiece Mystery!; check local schedules) as A Portrait of the Inspector As a Young Man. "You won't make much of a detective if you're not prepared to look death in the eye," a wizened medical examiner advises the squeamish young constable at a grisly crime scene. This affable, red-haired lad would go on to do quite well — as Oxford's renowned Inspector Endeavour Morse, immortalized by the late John Thaw as a Mystery! staple for more than a decade (living on in the exploits of his sidekick-turned-Inspector Lewis, whose next series of episodes begins next Sunday). A treat for the faithful, the prequel Endeavour is set in 1965, introducing us to Morse (Shaun Evans) as a boyish but hardly clueless constable. His affinity for crossword puzzles and opera is already well established, and it comes in handy, along with his unpretentious and impulsively aggressive nature, to solve an especially tricky and emotionally surprising case.
Even if we didn't already know who he would become, it's clear this kid has a future...
