In the premiere of this adaptation of author George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" medieval fantasies, King Robert Baratheon (Mark Addy) journeys north to offer Lord Ned Stark (Sean Bean) an important position in his court after the death of a trusted mentor. Meanwhile, the exiled Prince Viserys Targaryen (Harry Lloyd) uses his sister, Daenerys (Emilia Clarke), as a pawn in his plot to return to power.

Guest stars include Jamie Sives, Ron Donachie, Joseph Mawle, Roger Allam, Dar Salim, Esmé Bianco and Susan Brown.

Accompanied by his daughters, Ned (Sean Bean) rides south to take his place in King Robert's (Mark Addy) court, but Catelyn (Michelle Fairley) remains at Winterfell, praying that Bran (Isaac Hempstead Wright) will recover. Meanwhile, Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) tags along when Jon Snow (Kit Harington) leaves for the Night's Watch with his uncle; and Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) gets advice on how to please her husband.

Meanwhile, Jon Snow (Kit Harington) gets off to a rough start with the other recruits at Castle Black, but his commitment impresses Tyrion (Peter Dinklage), who clashes with Benjen (Joseph Mawle) over the purpose of the Night's Watch; and Catelyn (Michelle Fairley) secretly follows Ned to King's Landing, where she airs her suspicions about the Lannisters to her old friend Petyr Baelish (Aidan Gillen).
